The End of an Era

Yes, those all form an "infinite" loop. Note, that none of those loops are mandatory, and thus will have to be ended eventually, even if nothing else to exile is around. Unlike the loop with 3x Oblivion Ring, which would be a mandatory loop if there are no other nonland permanents around, and would make the game end in a draw.

No. The Giant, and with it the replacement effect to double damage, is gone with the sacrifice. But the ability is still waiting on the stack to resolve. When it finally does, there is no Calamity Bearer and no doubling effect around, so only the normal amount of damage is dealt.

Urza Assembles the Titans's last chapter gives a definite number of activations for your planeswalkers, you can only activate them twice this turn. You'd need to reset the number of uses you had already, by blinking the planeswalker, to go further.

I think, that is refering to the other Gideon (Gideon, Ally of Zendikar) and its emblem. When using The Chain Veil for the combo, that other Gideon can also be activated more than once. So use the +1 to turn it into a creature, use the -4 for the emblem, then blink, then do it again, for "infinite" emblems and thus get the "incredible Hunk".

Well, the combo requires quite a bit more stuff. For starters, you need mana dorks and/or animated lands, that can in total produce at least 4 mana for The Chain Veil activation, or just 1 for The Peregrin Dynamo activation. The Chain Veil also has to be turned into a creature if you are using that for the combo. You can then use Gideon's first loyalty ability to untap all your creatures, which includes the manlands, mana dorks and the Chain Veil, and give them +1/+1 each. You can then use the Chain Veil with mana from your manlands and dorks to get another activation of Gideon. Rinse and repeat.

Alternatively, you can activate Gideon's first loyalty ability to untap and pump, RESPOND with an activation of The Peregrin Dynamo (because Gideon isn't a commander and he is legendary) to copy it using mana from a mana dork or animated land. Let ONLY the copy resolve, then tap the mana dork or manland and activate the Dynamo AGAIN to get another copy of Gideon's ability, which is still on the stack. Rinse and repeat.

Another alternative would be to somehow get a token copy of Gideon after its activation has resolved, probably with some Ratadrabik of Urborg shennanigans, which also requires Gideon to be a creature. You can then use the token for the next activation, make another token, rinse and repeat.

The essence of the combo is to have another Gideon activation ready after one resolved, with enough mana and all nessessary tap abilities untapped available for another iteration.

  • posted a message on Casting MDFCs for free with Coveted Prize
Unfortunately, that doesn't work. Coveted Prize searches for any card regardless of mana value, but requires the spell you want to cast for free off it to have a mana value of 4 or less. It also doesn't have to be the card you searched for. Bring to Light, otoh, has a mana value restriction on the search only. The exile and free casting later does not fall under that restriction.

Time stamps only matter within a layer or sublayer. Otherwise, the order of the layers is what matters. Not that there is more than one relevant layer here (copy effects, layer 1). What's printed on the face of the card is the beginning point upon which all layers are applied. You can think of that as layer 0, if you like.

Yes, but not right away. Since Saheeli creates a copy effect, the new copiable values overwrite what's printed on the card, wether the front face is up or the back. When the copy effect ends in the cleanup step, then you get the back face of the Gateway. Until then, you will have a tapped Mysterious Tome, even though the back side is up.

  • posted a message on Hive Mind and targeting with Counterspell
The gatherer entry of Hive Mind has your answer in the rulings:
If a player casts an instant or sorcery spell, Hive Mind's ability triggers and is put on the stack on top of that spell. Hive Mind's ability will resolve first. When it does, it creates a number of copies of that spell equal to the number of players in the game minus one. First the player whose turn it is (or, if that's the player who cast the original spell, the player to that player's left) puts their copy on the stack, choosing new targets for it if they like. Then each other player in turn order does the same. The last copy put on the stack will be the first one that resolves. (Note that the very last thing to happen is that the original spell resolves.)

So the copies are created in turn order, and each only after the previous one has been created and targets chosen for it. So a copy for a player that is further in turn order cannot be targeted.

The 12/05/23 random card of the day is Voidmage Apprentice. If you have any comments, combos or a decklist involving this card, feel free to share.

Kai Budde was in the prior set. This was relegated to draft fodder.

Unless you want to counter a split second spell, then this is one of the very few cards, that can do that. Since unmorphing is a special action, it can be done even with a split second spell on the stack. The trigger then goes on top and can counter it.

  • posted a message on +1/+1 counters and marked damage
Marked damage gets removed in the cleanup step of when an effect removes it (the regeneration and totem armor replacement effects do that).+1/+1 counter do not remove marked damage, but they do increase toughness. So the bolted 4/4 Hungering Hydra will be a 4/4 Hungering Hydras with 3 damage marked. When the trigger resolves, it gets 3 +1/+1 counters and be a 7/7 Hydra with 3 damage marked.

Note, that there is a window, where 1 more damage can kill the Hydra before it gets counters. So an opponent's Shock can ruin your plans to grow it.

  • posted a message on Applying Minus P/T
All base power/toughness setting effects apply in sublayer 7b. All power/toughness modifying effects apply in sublayer 7c. Within each layer and sublayer, effects are applied in timestamp order, unless there is dependency, which would require extremely unusual setups in regards to power/toughness, if it can happen at all.

    1. Player B has out lord of atlantis and some other 2/2 merfolk that was being buffed to a 3/3. Would that other merfolk die to massacre wurm?

Yes. First the Lord of Atlantis dies for having 0 or less tougness as a state based action. Then another check of state based actions is performed right afterwards (because a state based action happened), and now the game sees the other merfolk at 0 toughness, so it goes to the graveyard, too. Then another check is performed (because a state based action happened), and this time there is nothing to clean up. The game proceeds. Note, that the other merfolk dies later than the Lord, which can be relevant for dies triggers.

    2. Player B has a 2/2 being buffed by glorious anthem to a 3/3 and anthem gets destroyed after the -2/-2. Would the 2/2 die?

If it is during the same turn the Massacre Wurm entered the battlefield, yes.

    3. One of Player B's 5/5 creatures gets frogify on it afterwards would it die?

Yes. The original base power/toughness of 5/5 is set to 1/1 in layer 7b. Then the Wurm's effect reduces p/t to -1/-1 in layer 7c, leaving the creature at -1/-1.

    4. Player B destroys kenrith's transformation on his 2/2 creature before the turn ends, does it die?

Yes. The p/t setting effect of the Transformation ends, leaving the creature with its original 2/2 base. The Wurm's effect still applies, reducing the p/t to 0/0.

  • posted a message on Casting Copies Triggers
Yes. A copy of a card is created in the same zone the original is at that time. Since you exile the card, the copy is created in exile. Then you are allowed to cast it without paying its mana cost, from exile.

707.12. An effect that instructs a player to cast a copy of an object (and not just copy a spell) follows
the rules for casting spells, except that the copy is created in the same zone the object is in and then
cast while another spell or ability is resolving. Casting a copy of an object follows steps 601.2a–h of
rule 601, “Casting Spells,” and then the copy becomes cast. Once cast, the copy is a spell on the
stack, and just like any other spell it can resolve or be countered

  • posted a message on Sheoldred and Vilis Interaction
Do note, that you are drawing cards in this loop. And you have 5 mana available. So there is the chance, that you draw into an instant removal spell (if you run such in your deck) to kill Sheoldred before she kills you.

  • posted a message on Vorinclexplasm’s Counters
Vorinclex's replacement effect is only active while he's on the battlefield. Since replacement effects (like entering with +1/+1 counters) are applied BEFORE the object enters the battlefield, Vorinclex will enter with only two +1/+1 counters (if X=2). Same reasoning applies to The Mimeoplasm, Altered Ego, etc. (though with Altered Ego there's obviously a Vorinclex on the field already, and that one would apply).
