A New and Exciting Beginning

The End of an Era

Looks great to me. Blocks reasonably well against agro, makes artifacts and can flip fairly easily on turn 2 (or even turn 1 if your high power) and its an evasive body to hold equipment.

+2 loyalty on an ability that reduces your opponents boards power seems like it could be pretty strong. 4 loyalty on t2 could start to get away from your opponent and ultimate pretty quickly.

So excited, more fuel for Mox Amber yet again!

I also think this any time I see a cheap legend. Its getting so close.

I think it's a miss for me; no storm and a robust agro section doesn't leave much room for guys like this.

I ran Baral for years without a storm package but the discount never really paid off, and I'd say that its even less likly to in red.

I run alot of the self recurring black agro guys, so I'm interested in this.

My only problem is its a green 1 drop and that's a really tight spot.

I'm interested, but I'll likly wait to see how it plays out for others. It's basically a 2 mana planeswalker with extra steps, and those are always hard to judge.

On a side note, I'm a big fan or Grists gimmick of being a creature in other zones.

I love braids but I sadly think her days are numbered as power creep moves the 4 drop slot in other directions.

I think smokestack is a bit more viable because its not a creature and you can tick up the counters on it, and whilst many decks can keep up with sacing a permanent every turn it can really be a struggle at 2 or 3 a turn.

Part of the problem is there are alot more cards these days that create multiple perminants and that is a double edged sword for the decks that are trying to abuse Braids style effects.

I will be sad to see either go, but Baids has had a long and healthy life crushing dreams, so will be remembered fondly.

Delay is a card I've always meant to try out but there's always a newer shinier counter to try out. I do like that it's s a hard, but temporary counter (if that makes any sense).

I think I'd give it a spin if someone handed me a French copy, because I'm a child of the 90s.

    - Delay is especially good vs pitch spells, which there are much more of now.

Is it? If they pitch a red card to evoke Fury and you Delay it, don't they get to keep the body (now with haste) when it comes off suspend?

I know buying those 2 turns could mean winning the game, but generally I'd think of delay as the kind of counter I'd want to avoid using on the pitch elementals. At least if you remand it they have to go down another card to try and recast.

I think you have committed a crime on resolution. I am guessing someone can counter your spell or ability to prevent the crime. At least thematically I could see them doing that

I had assumed you targeting is the crime, rather than it being a crime if it resolves; If you try to Shoot the Sheriff and he Redirects it, you still committed a crime.

Seems solid to me, isn't too hard to make it a 2CMC 4/4 or pump others up. Fetchlands grow it very quickly and the activated might be enough to push it over the edge. Not having trample may be the killer though, but I am happy to try it.

I like that it doesn't have to put the counters on itself, so its a bit like a green Lumimarch Aspirant that trades a guarnteed counter every turn for the ability to get 2+ counters a turn with fetch lands and ramp spells.

On its own it becomes a 16/16 on T5 if you have 3 fetches to drop before using him counter doubling... pity no trample...

Should have been "Destroy target non-deputy creature".

I still like the 2CMC removal spells and this seems like one of the best of them. I will definitely find a slot for it, maybe over Heartless Act?

Do the plotted cards cost the extra 2 mana? I know the plotted cards are free, but does that avoid any additional costs?

Cards that your opponent cast from graveyard / exile will cost an additional 2 (as long as Aven Interrupter is on the battlefield). Casting a card from plot is free mana wise. Think of it as morph where you pay mana to cast it face down, but turning it face up is always free, but now you have timing restrictions.

So for example, if cast you Aven Interrupter in response to your opponent's Tinker, they can cast the Tinker for 2 mana (or free if they kill the Aven Interrupter) + they still have to sacrifice an artifact.

Cool, it's a bit better than I thought in that case, I was thinking they didn't have to pay the 2 extra on a plotted card because plotted cards are cast for free.

I really wish it was a 3/1 instead of a 2/2, although I can see why the 2 toughness is also good for blocking spirts etc. I just love those 3/1 flash flyers a lot as it applies so much pressure.

Do the plotted cards cost the extra 2 mana? I know the plotted cards are free, but does that avoid any additional costs?

I like that it counters a counter completly, or messes with any spell that needs to be played at instant speed to do its thing.

It has been great for me. The targets it hits is surprisingly broad and it usually has relevant targets into the mid/late game. Scolding hits a lot of the ETB value creatures including some spicy hits like Solitude, as well as most of the usual agro creatures. This hits some important cube creatures all the way up to 5+ mana, and its a hard counter so it stays live into the late game.

Having some variety in the 1 mana counter department helps a lot in terms of keep your opponent guessing. I have blown my opponent out because they were playing round Force Spike instead of Scolding, or vice-versa.

Its obvious to say, but, being 1 mana instead of 2 makes a world of difference when it comes to keeping mana open, or even bluffing a counter.

Easily my favorite counter from the past while, and I have tried most.

Sevinne's Reclamation and those "perminant with CMC 3 or less" reanimation spells make it feel pretty solid.

Doesn't feel like it will be opressive though. Feels like they avoided him being able to effect the board so they don't have another Wren.

My drafters like it and he regularly sees play in control decks or various combinations, sometimes white is being splashed just to include him.

I have seen all the modes used but green is likly the least activated. That being said, a Naya deck loves the combination of pump+trample he can give.

The white mode is low-key back breaking. Gaining 5-10 life every turn cycle whilst still being able to counter/kill anything threatening him just puts the game out of reach for alot of decks.

He is a very solid mana-sink for those turns your holding interaction up but don't need it

I think I'm currently calling him a 5-colour card. It would be alot harder to justify if he was a stright up white card,

Got in some tests online and I can confirm it's a beating.

You really can't afford to block the 2/1 since Ajani can just flip and make another. Removal spells on Ajani feel bad since it's aimed at a 1/3 and can be fizzled if they can kill the 2/1 in response. It's another good 2cmc target to blink as it will make an army (that it can flip and pump).

Maybe time will prove me wrong on this, but it didn't feel opressive for how strong it is.

Budget is the only reason I won't be slamming him in my cube, but maybe he never finds a home in constructed.

Man, look at everyone yawn. But this card is good!

I mean it's not insane, but it makes the maindeck for any deck that didn't get better card draw (which is not uncommon outside of blue).

With the recent interest in Reckoner Bankbuster, I think people would do well to look here.

Reckoner draws cards, makes bodies, makes treasures and beats down at various stages during the game.

Not saying brainstone is bad, it's just kinda bland and comparing it to Reckoner really drives that home.

Maybe better in turbo cube though, since games can be very short digging deeper earlier might be preferred.
