No matter how smart and compelling your post/ article seems to you, it is not going to change hearts and minds. None of us had ever heard of either of these two people before this nonsense: it is just an excuse to rehash a bigger issue that will never be resolved by making posts and counter-posts on message boards. (Yes, I know saying that here is hypocritical.) -

How is it this kind of card always follows this pattern? It seems investors would have destroyed that easy plunder by over-exploiting it.Posted in: Articles
Not that I mind. I'm happy when cards are cheap, and easily available. Order now for your casual fun purposes, or you'll end up paying way more for the same card. In the mean time, almost every other card in the set will tank in value. Business as usual. - To post a comment, please login or register a new account.
The edict form of Atraxa's Fall.
With these permanent types, it's not unlikely your target is the only one of its type the opponent has. One mana for a versatile answer spell is obviously appealing. But I think this card's weaknesses are obvious.
But she and Novice Inspector are now interchangeable as new cubes are built. If you play both, you've got the jaded cop who's seen it all partnered with the hot-shot rookie.
This has an artifact rather than enchantment theme, and it's instant speed. I call it a sidegrade, and happy to have diverse playable options.
Thrill of Possibility is out in the cold with Tormenting Voice. They still don't talk to Wild Guess.
These will almost certainly settle to be fairly cheap like the other ETB tapped fetchables. And with a hint of graveyard matters, I'd be happy to throw one or two of these into a cube.
All that's missing is budget fetch alternatives.
Likewise, this set will be overpriced until nobody buys it. By this time next year, a booster box will sell for pretty cheap. Yes, Wizards does try to sell these at comically high prices, and anybody paying that price is just hitting themselves in the face. But the prices do settle.
Well yes, this is a me problem.
I like cube, so it doesn't matter that I know what riot does offhand. I need the card to tell people what it does who may not have been playing at exactly the moment riot came out, or may not remember since it was a random one-off mechanic. I can tell you for a fact if my sister saw riot without reminder text, she'd groan, roll her eyes, and say in an annoyed tone "okay, so what hell is riot?" I don't like annoying my players, alienating less experienced players, or making players give away information.
That means I can't use cards without reminder text for minor mechanics (very common ones like treasure are okay). It also meant I couldn't use anything with map tokens, since the reminder text didn't tell you what explore was even at common.
It's possible other people don't care about this, or even that they like a lack of reminder text because it's more elegant. I know I'm not alone (cubers tend to feel this way), but I'm hoping it annoys people as much as it annoys me, since that's something Wizards would change if there were an outcry. It's especially relevant since nowadays "premium" cards are EVERYWHERE.
There are lots of people who play lots of different ways. To me it's very important that cards say what they do. I will never stop complaining when they release cards that don't do that, since I think explaining the rules of a card is one of the most important functions of a card in a tcg.
I always love to see the old border, but the lack of reminder text means about half of them are useless.
Later in the game when they have maybe one or two cards and a limited life total, this is a real kick in the teeth (times when Inquisition of Kozilek might whiff). The scry is just a nice little upside that comes up sometimes.
On turn one, a targeted spell is probably better, and a whiff is unlikely. But that's offset by the damage. Black aggro loves a baby Blightning.
I like it better than Dreams of Steel and Oil or Duress. Basically all the one mana options other than Inquisition of Kozilek.
After a little time has passed:
I think Welcome to Sweettooth was a real sleeper for this set. Card's good! Any time I've seen it come down, it's been a lot of value for little mana. It was a last minute add for me, and I'm glad I threw it in.
Picklock Prankster is really good. That vigilance is sweet.
Cheeky House-Mouse and Embereth Veteran have just been bodies. But that's alright.
Torch the Tower has been good. Bargain isn't hard, and exile is very relevant.
Lord Skitter's Butcher has never been anything but two bodies, and the "can't block" is a pretty big downside. Still okay though.
Food Coma has been bad and will get cut.
Hopeful Vigil is whatever. But Hopeless Nightmare is quite good.
Witch's Mark is nice. I like a nice aura for upside.
Three Bowls of Porridge is not a card I was high on, and it's not a card I love, but for something so overpriced, it's not so bad.
I threw this in on a lark, and it has really over-performed. The body is serviceable, and the discard is occasionally relevant. But more important, a cube deck always has some pretty good stuff lying around in the sideboard.
I've been astonished at just how powerful it is to pay 4 for Granted. That expensive bomb I didn't think would fit in this deck? That extra disenchant effect you didn't think you needed in the main board? That off-color value creature you happen to have a treasure for? There's usually something good to grab.
And a 1/4 flying is not a bad play on turn two.
