So if someone uses Green Sun's Zenith or Through the Breach, those creatures put into play are still cast and not played??? Aether Vial casts creatures and not plays creatures??? Because it sure looks like those cards put creatures into play without being cast, which means there is a distinction between being played and cast.

Image text says "can't be played" oracle text says "can't be cast." I don't know why WOTC keeps making these typos because the difference between these two is the difference between winning and losing against any number of archetypes.

  • posted a message on Has anyone been successful with UG merfolk in modern?
I was interested in UG merfolk since seeing them come out in the last few sets. It doesn't quite have a place in legacy because it's a bit too linear, but in modern, you can't run force of will or daze anyway, so I'm wondering if UG merfolk has been successful in modern.

    Thalia, Guardian of Thraben

Suspend lets you "cast" something without paying it's mana cost, so does that mean a non-creature spell with suspend will still require 1 mana when it's cast?

Card name and tags added. Please always put the full name of any particular card you're asking about inside your post itself, and tag it. -MadMage

Oh okay I misread it, I thought it said "target creature" because all the other arresting cards like that are auras except for Godhead of Awe. The only problem I see with that is the mana cost, it doesn't seem like Enchantress has acceleration of any deck running large creatures, so what does Enchantress ultimately do with that extra time just from delaying the inevitable? Just sideboard for humility?

I don't see how that would stop an army or emrakul or progenitus.

In the card text, it says "can't be played" but in the site text, it says "can't be cast". Is cast and played now the same thing?

  • posted a message on Ixalan's Binding source?
Ixalan's Binding says "..., exile target non-land permanent..." but it doesn't say "Ixalan's Binding exiles target non-land permanent...". It's almost as if the player themselves is the source doing the exiling but I can't be too sure, is it the player or the card as the source? What rule specifies that?

What does Enchantress do against Eldrazi or something like Emrakul in sneak/tell? It seems like it will get overrun easily.

  • posted a message on Is this Swords play legit?
I'm not seeing the issue exactly. I'm going to go for 6 life no matter what and I just want to know if that kind of tactic works, because I know there's always something else around the corner and I'm just waiting for them to cast something. The double bolt scenario is just easier to describe than an entire board state, but it's possible some delver or burn player would have held on to two bolts for some reason by that late in the game, maybe they anticipated this swords.

I think the rule makes sense though, because if you're given priority and don't do anything, then you're just letting the first bolt resolve anyway, so you'd need to respond to it even without tournament-specific rules.

I have 1 life and I get targeted with two lightning bolts. However, I have a 4/4 Knight of the Reliquary , a Swords to Plowshares that my opponent saw thanks to Goblin Guide, a Wasteland and an untapped Savannah.

Here's what I want to do:
In response to the second lightning bolt, I cast Swords, then, in response to my own swords, I activate Wasteland targeting my own Savannah, but then in response to Wasteland, I activate Knight's land ability to sacrifice Savannah, putting Knight's ability on top of the stack.

What I hope is that Knight's ability resolves first because it's on top of the stack, so I search for a land and put it into play, then Wasteland resolves and it goes to the graveyard no longer with its former target keeping my new land safe, and by the time the stack reaches Swords, state-based actions have already checked that my Knight is now a 6/6, so when Swords resolves, I gain 6 life.

    Is that correct?

Okay, that clears it up. Does Eidolon "target" a player? Would something like shroud hexproof protect a player from it? Because it says "Eidolon" does the damage, but it doesn't say "target".

So Revel's ability resolves because it's later on the stack, but, why don't they have a chance to gain life just because of that? Is there a rule that says a player dies before whatever is on the stack resolves or during their priority or once they pass priority or what?

You have Eidolon of the Great Revel with your opponent at 2 life. But oh no, they use Swords to Plowshares to gain 20 life from their 20/20 creature. Does the opponent take lethal damage?
