  • posted a message on Commander Planeschase - The best way to keep commander games going for a really long time!
Hello everyone! I wanted to share my playgroup's recent variant to Commander with adding Planechase to the mix. Planechase is an interesting and fun variant on magic by itself. I encourage everyone who has not played Planechase or for that matter even heard or seen any of the Planes of Planechase please do so!

Now some of you might be asking, how does one combine the complexities of multiplayer commander with planechase plane cards? It's really quite simple. Generally speaking, our EDH playgroup ranges from anywhere between 3 people at a time to as much as 9 at once! Honestly the more players the better for when Planechase is added into the mix, their is no telling what could happen!

The planar deck (The separate deck of Planechase plane cards) is the communal deck that everyone in the Commander game uses and the plane effects everyone at the same time. The same rules still apply in that of planechase where anyone can role the planar die (D6 with four blank sides with one side having the planeswalker symbol and the other a chaos symbol) for free once per turn. Anyone that wishes to role the planar die more than once per turn has a cumulative cost of paying 1 generic mana after each role. (Example: role 1 = 0 mana, role 2 = 1 generic mana, role 3 = 2 generic mana, role 4 = 3 generic mana, etc.)

Commander games can get very long and can get very complex. Some planar cards may not be advisable in playing Commander with planes that affect certain colors in which no one in a play group plays.

Some of my personal favorite planes are: The Eon Fog, Skybreen, Pools of Becoming, Naya, Bloodhill Bastion, Grove of the Dreampods, Orzhova, and Windriddle Palaces.

I would like this thread to be the spot for those that have played Commander along with Planechase to comment for what is the most fun way to play this shared variant format, what decks and colors work best with the planes, etc.

Love Esper colors for EDH. First was Oloro and boy was it fun, granted my playground tended to hate the commander because they thought it did nothing but passively gain life. I tended to build my deck around any way to abuse life gain and life loss as much as possible with my opponents. What infinite combos can one have with Oloro? It's been a while since I've actually played with Oloro since I've shifted to Sydri, Galvanic Genius and now most recently to Sharuum the Hegemon.

I am honestly surprised that this deck is not Tier 2 in just how well it performs. I'm definitely excited to see how Thought-Knot Seer and Eldrazi Displacer interacts with this deck and with others in Modern.

With the death of Splinter Twin, this deck will no doubt in my mind come into favor of being Tier 1 and perform very well in the coming months of Modern, especially the Pro Tour coming up. I see Inkmoth Nexus to go up quite a bit in the coming days leading to Pro Tour and perhaps after the Pro Tour if Infect performs well along with Affinity. Hard to say honestly, the prices on cards have gone crazy lately.

Granted this variation of Twin wasn't heavily reliant on the Splinter Twin piece of the combo and was one of the only variations that actually used Kiki-Jiki, Mirror Breaker I think with a bit of tweaking, this variation could still do well. Unfortunately it'll go back to Developing Competitive tier with this change but only time will tell honestly.

Hi guys, they just banned my favourite deck. Fortunately, I have most cards needed for Grixis Control. I only have 1 Jace, VP though. Do you think it's possible to play some version of this deck with 4 Snapcasters, 1 Jace, VP and perhaps fill the void with other cards like Goblin Dark-Dwellers, Kalitas, Traitor of Ghet or Mulldrifter? Also, how will this deck fare in a metagame with GR Tron and Bx Eldrazi being the top dogs?

Honestly the "Blue Jund" style with Jace shined in grindy matchups, you cannot grind against Tron or Eldrazi. I'm not even sure you want to play mini Jace and I think maindeck Fulminator Mages are a must now, Tron's biggest enemy is dead and we have a new fast mana deck around. This is obviously speculative and theorycrafting on my part, so take it as you will.

Its sad to say but I agree. Torn's biggest enemies are killed in the format and will run rampant unless their is enough mainboard hate against them. I sense Fulminator Mage and Blood Moon will now go into a lot of mainboards now just to combat Tron, B/X Eldrazi, and Affinity. Hard to say, but if the Pro Tour is majority Tron, I'd expect the need for land hate to go up.

Splinter Twin players will essentially just take their control shells now and adapt them to Grixis Control in hope to continue the control presence in Modern.

Ancestral vision won't happen. Burn will literally splash blue to be able to play it. That issue of running out of gas will help a bit

Blue needs either a 2 mana hard counter, or a jace that would skyrocket past goyf prices to be competetive

Jund was already slipping into tier 2 in this meta, I'm certain both abzan and Jund will firmly remain tier 2 for the time being

From the bottom of my heart, I hope goldfish decks absolutely dominate these next couple of months and the pro tour is playing magic at their opponents, not with them, and I hope it's captured on camera and turns people off to the format

I find spending hundreds if not more when a ban occurs an issue.

Do you know how many hundreds of dollars it'll be if scapeshift becomes the new control/combo deck? Scapeshift is now 50 on tcg alone, so 200 dollars alone for that playset, along with other things

Niles, as someone who spends a lot on this hobby, I find it pretty outrageous to spend this money because the company wanted to shake things up and be experimental

I completely agree in that I see control falling out of favor unless it gets some good new fuel for the cause (like a 2 mana hard counter or a powerful Jace in the format).

Jund and Junk get hosed by the new B/X Eldrazi decks so their is no doubt it'll be tier 2 for too long.

I like Smallpox as an option, usually never run it mainboard. I personally think Blackmail could be an interesting option for us to use in conjunction with Surgical Extraction and or Extirpate, that way if they're foolish enough to show extra Tron lands you can punish them early on.

Isn't a doubt in my mind that the majority of the Pro Tour in the coming weeks is going to be G/R Tron. I love 8Rack but boy does it have a hard time against Tron.

I have a good feeling with Twin and Amulet Bloom gone, ELdrazi is definitely do well at the Pro Tour. I'm honestly expecting either the mono black version or the B/R to be the ones that do the best though I am increasingly more interested by this new variation of B/U Eldrazi.

With Splinter Twin & Summer Bloom getting the hammer, their is no doubt in my mind that Tron is going to be the most well performing deck in the format along with Affinity, Infect, B/X Eldrazi, and Burn. However, if R/G Tron does as well as everyone suspects as much at the Pro Tour this honestly implies that Tron will get the hammer next with either Ancient Stirrings getting the hammer and neutering the deck without killing it or the absolute destruction of the deck's archetype with the Urza Lands getting banned. Time will tell and the Pro Tour is just around the corner.

Disappointing to say the least that Splinter Twin got banned. One of my all time favorite decks in modern, it's hard to say what the future of control has in modern. I am thinking of just changing my Twin shell to Grixis control with perhaps a little more board hate on G/R Tron and Affinity which will no doubt in my mind be dominating at the Pro Tour in the coming weeks.

I agree with Cody_X in that although the prices for Scalding Tarn & Snapcaster Mage won't plummet a huge amount, they will be nonetheless be hurt until control can find a new deck to compensate for the loss of Splinter Twin. Heck at my LGS I've already seen people dumping their twin and other key pieces to the deck.
