The End of an Era

    Thanks for the comments!

First, I was very high on Midnight Reaper but like Vraska, it performed very below expectations. I ended up taking those out and completing the playsets of Ferox's and Doomys in it's place. At some point I could definitely see it finding it's place into the list.

Drover of the Mighty. This is a very interesting discussion for a couple reasons. First, so far the any color has only been an issue a couple times. Saved me with the second green for Ferox on 3 a few times along with several times for the turn 4 Doom Whisperer. I simply chose it for the add any color. As far as Llanowar Elf, if Breeding Pool were legal he'd be an auto include. I'm also including the 2 mana mana dorks over the one mana elf due to the shock lands and the ability to run any number of Woodland Streams. Maybe, it'll make it's way into the list but for now and the flexibility of the sideboard I like the more mana fixing potential. This also makes the sideboard more versitile as I plan to test out Thought Erasure's in the board. I feel they may be devastating to play one out araly to take a potential removal spell out of a Ferox's danger zone.

Chart a Course. The dark horse. The unsung hero. Potentially my favorite card in the list. Gives me more reach that this deck deserves honestly. Let's face it, I want to run Chemister's Insight. Let's be honest, this may still happen. Here's what I've discovered. Running a Pelt Collector out on 1 and NOT having a Drover on 2 but having a Chart is amazing (this is also the Glowspore Shaman's job). Especially if you have a Ferox waiting to be dropped on 4 but only have the 3 lands. It's all about consistency. CaC with Ferox you ask? At the 2 CC it becomes a 4 CC with a Ferox in play. That's something I can live with as opposed to 6 mana with the Insight. Same with Vraska's Contempt. It would be main but I'll settle for the 3x Assassin's Trophy's and bring them in in the MU's I'll need them in.

    Sideboard.

15 open cards realistically. Negates can find their way in, it's all up for grabs honestly. I really like the idea I can play Stompy game one and become a midrange game 2 if desired. The current sideboard was as open and universal as I felt I could make it going into a meta that's essentially wide open. Obviously as we progress, it will become more narrow as we figure out what is being played and what we are weak against.

I like Kraul Harpooner. It seems very interesting. Again, I feel this may be more meta dependent and figuring out how many opposing Doom Whisperers and Lyra Dawnbringers are floating around. This card unfortunately gets worse if I take out Glowspore Shaman's however.

I posted in another thread so I just copied it over because it fits here also.

So here's my take on Sulti Midrange.

Very quick background, In researching and building this list upon spoiler season I tested several cards and found out several interesting facts. First to my disappointment, Vraska, Golgari Queen was not what I wanted to her to be. At least with the style of deck I had wanted to run. I originally thought she'd be amazing with Muldrotha, the Gravetide but found out too many times she'd come down on an empty board and didn't do anything. So I moved on without her.

It didn't take long to figure out running anything less that 4 of both Doom Whisperer and Nullhide Ferox is a mistake. They are to good to leave out. After gold fishing around 20 or games I found I was drawing too many lands so I cut and haven't looked back since. Found that 23 feels really good.

So I finally got to play some actual games. I will not get into to much detail right now but at both FNM, and a Win-a-Box I went 2-1.

    FNM

    Naya Tokens
0-2 He drew 5 Conclave Tribunal in the two games. This was before I upp't the Trophy's to 3(2) and I had only 1 Brontodon in the Side. Still felt good about the games.

    Mono green
    2-0 not even close.

    GW Tokens
    2-1 Little better prepared.

    Win-a-Box

    Sulti Midrange
2-0 I felt I tutored for every card.

    Mono(4-color)Red Dragon's
    2-1 His list can't deal with Ferox's.

    Mono Red
0-2 I need to play this MU a lot more. He had an awesome hand game one and I nearly beat him, game two, I sat at 3 mana with 2 Ferox'x in my hand. I again, nearly beat him.

    Jeski Control
2-1 This was a difficult match but Ferox is obviously a big deal here. Vraska out of the side also fared very well.

Both nights I lost to the deck whom took 1st. I can't argue that.

Lots of games to be played yet before I decide more. The sideboard was as broad as I could make it without knowing the meta and only what a couple of people were playing. After the first weekend of test games and actual match games played the only thing I'd change currently is maybe something as lame as Druid of the Cowl in for Glowspore Shaman. They did their jobs but sort of at a mediocre pace. They are good with Muldrotha obviously. but I feel the deck ran best when I played a Turn 2 Drover of the Mighty. I know the Shaman has more synergy with the Pelt Collectors and Muldrotha but I think I want as many turn 2 mana dorks as I can. Turn 3 Ferox's are amazing!

I plan to put all my standard time into this list and do as much testing as I possibly can.

Excuse me? Risk Factor is a TERRIBLE card, in a control deck. Which, correct me if i'm wrong this is a control thread is it not? By all means however, play it and good decks will simply beat you. I'm just letting you know so you can wrap your head around playing cards that actually fit a deck or an archtype for that matter. Or are you the type of player that plays Night of Souls' Betrayal in a BW Token deck? sheesh....

Nobody is suggesting you play Risk Factor in a control dec. I actually wouldn't recommend it. In a counter-burn dec is where the card shines.

So can you guys help me out here. Help pull the wool away from my eyes. Please explain to me why on earth you’d play a card like Risk Factor in a control deck? I understand in a burn but not in a deck like this. Especially when this deck has access to Chemister’s Insight. I mean, imo Browbeat was a pretty decent card and it saw nearly no play. This isn’t MUCH different and yes, it IS better but doesn’t belong in a non burn control deck.

So I'm looking to make a third "active" EDH deck. Here is s list of what I have currently or have played in the past. Most of these decks have been played quite a bit. Obviously, i've built and played many decks once or twice then tore down. But here is the list that i'm very familiar with.

    Curently playing Commanders.

    Chainer, Dementia Master

    Muldrotha, the Gravetide

    Lists of the past.

    Child of Alara

    Daretti, Scrap Savant

    Purphorous, God of the Forge

    Godo, Bandit Warlord

    Karador, Ghost Chieftain

My next list i'm wanting to build is Kess, Dissident Mage but as you can see, I've already ran several yard decks and am still currently playing two lists. So I was thinking about wanting to change it up a bit for my next list. Leaning towards a 3 color commander with white that's not graveyard based. I'm also fond of mono color EDH lists especially mono red.

Any crazy or neat ideas will be much appreciated.

    Intersting list.

I'm surprisingly not surprised about the lack of Shades. They get chumped so easily it seems. Tetzimoc for seemed only a 7 mana Nekrataal 4 of 5 times. He's neat but I ended up moving him to the sideboard where I can tutor for him if needed. He Shined in that location. Too often at running 1 in the Main Deck he was a "dead" card. I was looking over those lists and Demises misses 2 cards below 3 CC. 1 at 4 CC. Goblin Chainwhirler, Winding Constrictor and Rekindling Phoenix.

I'll admit, I am surprised at the 2 Hailfires.

I am NOT surprised at the full set of Doomfalls. That card is so good game one vs nearly everything. Never a dead card so far. It's fun taking opposing Phoenix's with it.

I am playing it actually. You know what I don't like about Torment? Drawing it when yer behind. It's a dead card. Mr. Vess can flat out swing a game around that you are behind on. Torment? Can not. Not unless you have a billion mana at that point, yes, that can happen but I'll choose consistency over flash every day of the week.

I've never played standard before, but MBC being cheap and big mana got me excited. With some tweaking I ended up with the following list, I will eventually pick up 4 Walking Ballista in place of the Torment of Venom and Josu. I'm playing the compass/blood fast split because additional Arguels' are worthless, and against control Compass is better.

Did you just say, in place of Josu?

    Please don't.

I run 3 in my list and many times I want a fourth. I've learned that a 4/5 with menace on turn 4 is POWERFUL backed by removal. He's a walker killer and a hell of blocker at that point.

Phyrexian Scriptures I want to try it. I've just not been able to test much this past week and I'm honestly not satisfied with what i've tested so far. Some day I will get some time to run some games with it.

I found this today while chatting with a friend during testing:

I like that list. It’s the closest one to mine.

My opinion and thoughts on Ballistas are a must run for us. I run three and I could see going up to 4. I’ve played several games vs tokens where they are putting Vampire tokens every turn and keep attritioning us and being able to block shade for days. With Ballista however, with a Stronghold or two, and dumping mana every turn into Ballista putting 1,2 or even 3 counters kills those tokens off fairly easily. It evens the field vs decks placing several tokens a turn.

    I don't really think they're that necessary...
This simply means you've not played them. If you feel $12 is high priced than you are in the wrong forum. This is NOT budget. There is no substitute for the best card in the deck. Cast down is bad in this meta. Simple. We are black, we have better options.

I still feel Demise over Expertise is 100% correct. I've about 65-70 games in with the list and I think I have maybe 2-3 instances where I'd rather have Expertise over Demise. I think I'll take them numbers.

#4x Gifted Aetherborn in the maindeck, it is just a very solid creature that will always at least trade and gradually gains life which is very useful.

I would like to move him to my main deck but i've no idea what I'd take out. He currently seems content as a 3-of in my sideboard.

Went 4-0 at FNM. Went up against Mardu Vehicles, Temur Energy, a W/U Homebrew with a bunch of unlockable creatures and auras, and mono red.

Takeaways: Dreamstealer is a no-go. Sideboarded all three out every single match, and never found myself wanting to draw it.

Running some number of Gifted Aetherborn in the main is probably the right call. Helps against aggro matches and puts pressure on control. Also makes OTKO-ing someone with Torrent of Hailfire easier.

I want to try Mastermind's Acquisition out, as it does give a lot of flexibility.

    Potential changes:
    OUT
    3x Dreamstealer
    2x Torrent of Hailfire
    2x Ravenous Chupacabra

    --- SB ---
    1x Bontu's Last Reckoning
    1x Disposses
    2x Gifted Aetherborn

    IN
    4x Gifted Aetherborn
    2x Mastermind's Acquisition
    1x Gonti, Lord of Luxury

    ---SB---
    1x Torrent of Hailfire
    1x Gonti, Lord of Luxury
    1x Tetzimoc, Primal Death
    1x Ravenous Chupacabra

    Well played!

If I had Contempt's I'd be playing them, though I would like suggestions as to what to cut when I put them in (Anything larger than FNM I'd get them)

    I would get them....

So would someone explain to me why they are running Yahenni's Expertise over Golden Demise? I understand the format is young, but I see no reason to run the 4 cost over the 3 cost? I mean what are you testing against?

The fact that Painful Lesson is a Sorcery is 100% irrelevant. The fact that it costs 3 does. It’s in there to make sure you draw that early land or removal card early in the match. I’ve played enough games to know how important it is when you miss that land drop in turn 4.

With that being said, played the list I posted earlier. I was very satisfied with my list.

I played BW tokens which I lost 0-2 but I felt good about the match up because he had dropped 2 Anointed Prosession game 1 and 3 game 2. I held in there. He caught me off guard with a card (sorry forgot the name) but I was at like 11 life and feeling really good about the game and he had like 12 0/1 Clerics and I lost a life for each dude he had in play. Caught off guard but felt ok otherwise.

Game two he ended up gaining 170 life. Was putting 4 Vampires in play a turn and I lasted forever with the 3 Prossesions. So extreme situation and I felt I held my own. Decided I really should have the 3rd Demise in the sideboard.

Round 2 was a GW midrange featuring Fall of the Thran. I drew really well and was able to fire off Lost Legacy’s on his Tehran’s before he was able to get going. Lost game two due to a hexproofed Multani. Not upset about that one either.

    Ending up winning 2-1.

Round 3 was Sulti Constricter. Both games it felt pretty easy going. Finished both games with a turn 8 or 9 kicks Vess. Both games I attacked only once and lethal both times.

Round 4 was BW Knights/Tokens. Doomfall was surprisingly amazing in the matchup. Basically taking the card that will mess with my Golden Demise the most.

So I ended the night 3-1 in matches and 6-4 in games. Felt really good. Even the games I lost I was right there and lost due to a top deck or extreme circumstances. I mean, 3 Anointed Processions? Sheesh. Anyways currently the only change I would make is somehow fit a third Golden Demise back in the sideboard.

Overall pretty happy with how it performed. Like I said only 1 change currently with adding the Demise. Who knows what I’ll take out. I felt the sideboard is very, VERY solid.

If you are unsure about Gonti, consider this situation. UW control. You cast Gonti on 4. You select a card, 10 turns later you kicked a Josu and will swing in for lethal. They tap four for Settle the Wreackage. You tap 2 and Negate it. This happened not once, but twice in my games last night.

    He’s worth it.

As far as the discussion on Dark Bargain, I really wanted to run it. But in my years of playing this game when I lose to mana screw, it’s because I don’t draw a fourth. Bargain does not help that. That’s why I run Painful Lesson. It makes that 2 Swamp with a Painful Lesson a keepable hand. This deck needs to do a couple things in the early game, survive. Drop lands. That’s why I run so many. When I drop lands every turn, my chances of winning are very high.
