Because it doesn't really do anything the turn it comes in and you can't protect it at all. Also, many times you are racing their creatures with your burn and a Helix is so good because it sets the other play back a turn possibly. Chandra would come down on 4 mana and eat some damage while Helix does damage and gains you some needed life.
No one plays Fiendslayer Paladin and it isn't hard for this deck to deal with anyway.
So is the list from your video the one your going to play this weekend at whatever event you're going too? I ask because I'm going to be playing this deck at the Atlanta SCG Open this coming weekend. I really like the inclusion of Ash Zealot over Young Pyromancer and am probably going to change to that. I hadn't thought of Spark Elemental either for the sideboard vs. R/G Monsters. It can probably buy you enough life and get through a point or two of damage to push you over the top of them.
We have similar lists except I didn't copy Brad Nelson and didn't run mutavaults cuz its screws my mana too much...I came 11th in ptq :/ monoblue and r/g too hard with this deck, rw devotion also tough cookie, other than that it does very well vs the mono b and uw control decks
I've beaten all three of those decks with R/W Burn. I have never had a problem with R/W devotion as they don't usually run much burn. Also, why are you running Mizzium Mortars? It doesn't go to the face at all? Young Pyromancer sucks as as Chandra. Just run more burn and out race your opponent.
oh wow! i didnt exspect the results for this deck to be that good. Especially with a strong presence of GR Monsters.
@Blackyce: that is an awesome finish! Could you give us a little sideboard guide?
Well just so you are aware, I've changed the deck up a little bit since the tourney. I was thinking about removing the Young Pyromancers for Flames of the Firebrand but decided to main deck three Chain to the Rocks instead. It helps a ton first game vs. G/R monsters, Mono U and Mono B. I have also changed the sideboard as well. With the three Chain to the Rocks in the main now and I decided to remove the Oracle of Bones as really he is more of a win more condition than anything else. For the five slots replacing them I have added the fourth Warleader's Helix and four Peak Eruption. I added Peak Eruption because I faced the mirror twice yesterday and I am seeing it online more as well. I was also watching some guys playing MTGO on Twitch and they were talking about Boros Burn so the deck is definitely out there and getting popular. Stone Rain that does 3 damage is great vs. the mirror and R/W Devotion as you can kill a Sacred Foundry with it and put back their white mana.
I sideboard like this because many times a white based control deck will side in Fiendslayer Paladin and or Archangel of Thune. Paladin cannot be targeted by our spells so he has to be answered by Satyr Firedancer. Archangel can be answered but the only 4 damage spell we have is Helix that can directly kill her. I always make sure not to drop my Satyr until it's needed. You don't want it being killed before you get a chance to use it's ability so wait until the turn after they play their creature to play it and kill theirs.
Magma Jet and Shock are pretty much your weakest cards that deal 2 damage. You want another Skullcrack to even prevent 1 life gain. I made a play mistake game 1 vs R/G Monsters and lost because I didn't skullcrack immediately in response to his ooze gaining him a life and I lost game 1 by 1pt. The other Phoenix is there because if they pay tribute it's a 5/5 they can't get rid of and can block. If they do and it's a 3/3 with haste, you can keep it back as a blocker and it will just bounce back to your hand upon death.
Mono B
-4 Satyr Firedancer, -1 shock, +4 Firedrinker Satyr and +1 Skullcrak. The Firedancer isn't living long enough to really do anything vs. Mono B and you have enough burn to kill their rats and specters. You put in the Firedrinkers because they take out a bit of their removal since we are so light on creatures and bring in more discard like we are a control deck. I dropped a T1 Firedrinker game 3 of my 7th match and he did 9 damage by himself before he was taken care of. The extra Skullcrack is for Grey Merchant.
Mono U
-1 Skullcrack +1 Warleader's Helix. This match up is all about, can you destroy enough of their devotion guys before master hits an how much damage have you done to them so you can see if you can race Master if it lands and you have no Chained in hand. With the chains main board there really isn't much else you can do besides bring in more burn in Helix.
This is very interesting! When against the green ramp machine, and you have no synergy working from your board, do you burn his mana dorks or his face?
You burn out their mana elves, you can many times burn out their Ooze still and I even burn out their Courser if I feel it's necessary, when they are using it to ensure their mana drops. Game 1 vs. R/G Monsters I burned out a courser with a shock and Searing Blood so even though I had to 2-1 to get his guy off the table, I still got 3 to his face, so in reality it isn't a true 2-1 it's really an on par 2-2. I have even burned out a Polukranos doing the same thing except with Lighting Strike and Searing Blood. Once the game gets to beyond T4 thought, usually all your burn is going at their head.
I have been playing Brad Nelson's deck since it was introduced last weekend at the SCG Open. I played it straight up until today when I went to the Atlanta PTQ and made T8 with it. Only losing to the mirror. I am now currently 14-2-1 with the deck.
The only change I have made to the deck is removing the Young Pyromancer and Mizzium Mortars in the side and adding two Flame-Wreathed Phoenix. I did this because I believe the hardest match up for the deck is R/G monsters as most of the time I will have to 2 for 1 a Stormbreath Dragon or Palukranos. Mizzium Mortars answers Stormbreath Dragon but not Polukranos, World Eater or any monster bigger than 5/5. Flame-Wreathed Phoenix does. It will either be a 3/3 with haste that comes back to my hand when it dies, another great blocker like Chandra's Phoenix that automatically comes back to my hand upon death or they will make it a 5/5 and not be able to kill it as they usually only have Mizzium Mortars as removal and I will be able to go over the top of Dragon or be able to hold off and kill a Palukranos if it ever attacks..
As I said, I went 6-1-1 and made it into T8 where I lost to Mono Blue.
Round 1 vs. U/W/R control
Game 1 - I win fairly easily, not losing a single life point. I had a T2 Pyromancer that pretty much went unchecked.
Game 2 - I lost because I sideboarded out the Firedancers and he brought in Fiendslayer Paladin and Archangel of Thune. He is at 10 life and I have a Lighting Strike in hand. He attacks with his Fiendslayer and I respond by casting Skullcrack so he doesn't gain life, putting him to 7. He then drops the Archangel and I need to top deck Helix or Boros Charm to win. I don't and concede since he is going to gain 7 next turn.
Game 3 - I side back in the Firedancers but again this is much like game 1 and I just blow him out.
Games 2-1, Match 1-0
Round 2 vs. Boros Burn
Game 1 - I have what I think is a great opening hand, Mountain, Temple of Triumph, 2x Mutavault, Satyr Firedancer, Boros Charm and Skullcrack. This hand is exceptional vs. both control and creature decks but NOT vs. the mirror. He drops T2 Pyromancer and I have no way to get it off the board as he burns my T2 Firedancer. I also draw more land than he does.
Game 2 - I keep a decent hand but I draw 7 land while he draws only 4. He kills me the turn before I can kill him.
Games 0-2, Match 1-1
Round 3 vs. B/W Midrange
Game 1 - I don't see any white from him, burn his Pack Rat and easily burn him out.
Game 2 - I have him to about 10 and he drops Demon, then Baron and I can't burn him out before Baron will start gaining him life.
Game 3 - Very much like game 1 but he gets no Baron. He does drop a demon but it's a little to late and I easily burn him out.
Games 2-1, Match 2-1
Round 4 vs. R/G Monsters
Game 1 - I lose as he goes finds a Polukranos, World Eater that I can't deal with. Sadly I should have won this game as I made a play error. He ate a dead elf with his Ooze and in response I should have Skullcracked him but forgot and did it end of turn. He gains a few more life with Courser and I can only bring him down to 1 before he can kill me.
Game 2 - He paris' to 5, and I have a Satyr in hand I play turn 2, his T2 he plays elf, elf, my turn 3 I burn his face with two burn spells and eat both elves. It's a pretty easy win from there.
Game 3 - This one is again all me. He is stuck on 4 mana and doesn't have a Polukranos, World Eater. Even with a Domri and Courser, I burn him out ASAP.
Games 2-1, Match 3-1
Round 5 vs. Boros Burn
Game 1 - I am on the draw but win because I draw two Searing Blood's to kill his stuff and just draw better burn.
Game 2 - Again on the draw, I draw more burn and fewer land. I win the turn before he kills me.
Games 2-0, Match 4-1
Round 6 vs. Mono Black
Game 1 - I have this game pretty much in the bag as all he has on the board is a Connections. He then proceeds to cast 3 Gray Merchants in a row doing 4, 6 & 8 to me in consecutive turns. Can't come back from that.
Game 2 - On the play, I play Firedrinker Satyr T1, he Thoughtseizes me T1 and takes Lightning Strike, the only spell in my hand I that can kill a creature. I draw, Shock, pump my Satyr doing 3 damage to him and pass, he plays Pack Rat thinking it's safe. I kill it on my turn with Shock and pump the Satyr again. From there I run him over with burn.
Game 3 - He Duress' me T1 and takes Searing Blood, I top deck another so when he plays rat T2, I kill it and do 3 damage to him T3. He gets stuck on 3 mana for a turn and I just run him over. He does drop a demon but by then I can just completely ignore it.
Games 2-1, Match 5-1
Round 7 vs. Mono Black
Game 1 - He gets and excellent draw and has T3 Specter, T4 Demon and I can't really race that well. When I try to kill his demon during his next turn, he Devour Flesh's it and gains 6 life and I can't come back.
Game 2 - On the play I just run over him. He has no removal for my Phoenix. He's able to Gray Merch for 3 but it's not enough to really matter.
Game 3 - We are fighting back and fourth. I think I have the win close at hand but he Devour Flesh's his creature in response to my Searing Blood. I have to hold back my Phoenix as he has a Pack Rat and Mutavault in play. I play my 6th land, scry for it and leave the Magma Jet on top. I have 2 Phoenix in hand and a Warleader's Helix. At 5 life he plays Gray Merchant for a drain of 3, I respond with Helixing him putting him to 1 then he gained 3 so he's at 4. He swings with a Rat putting me to 3. He's tapped out so I play Phoenix and Jet him for the final 4 damage.
Game 2-1, Match 6-1
Round 8 I draw with my opponent.
I make T8 at the 8th slot and have to play Mono U round 1.
I lose in 2 games as game 1 he's not playing Jace main but Domestication and he takes my Firedancer. I have Charm and Helix in hand, he's at 6 life but I have no white mana so I lose. Game 2 I didn't draw a Satyr and too much burn to the dome and not enough burn to creatures so he's able to cast a Master making 6 tokens.
I really like the deck but think Pyromancer honestly sucks. I sideboarded him out a ton. I am going to be replacing him with Flames of the Firebrand instead, as his token generating does almost nothing these days except maybe vs. U/W control. Other than that he's either killed instantly or his tokens and body are irrelevant because everyone is playing Mutavaults or bigger creatures. More burn hitting creatures is better in my opinion, especially when I can possibly 2-1 with said burn.
I have been playing Brad Nelson's deck since it was introduced last weekend at the SCG Open. I played it straight up until today when I went to the Atlanta PTQ and made T8 with it. Only losing to the mirror. I am now currently 14-2-1 with the deck.

Other than that he's either killed instantly or his tokens and body are irrelevant because everyone is playing Mutavaults. More burn the creatures is better in my opinion.
If Firedancer was a 2/1 he'd absolutely be completing the cycle. As it is, I'm cagey as a Red mage about spending my turn-two drop on a non-hasty 1/1. Loss of tempo, to be sure. Given that he turns all your burn into two-for-ones, though, he's worth looking at to be sure-- Red doesn't want to slow down the game by redirecting burn spells that should be hitting your opponent's face into their creatures, and now you don't have to. Chandra's Outrage is a bit too slow but can you imagine 3 for 1ing someone off of it? Delicious.
He doesn't belong in a RDW deck, he belongs more in a R or R/W burn deck. YOu do know a R/W burn deck made T8 at a Grand Prix about a month ago using Young Pyromancer and Chandra's Phoenix.
It could be a very interesting deck. You also have to realize this isn't a 2 drop, it's a 3 or drop depending on what burn you have in your hand as it's a creature that needs to be removed immediately and vs. Mono B, RDW or R/G Monsters it's going to be.
that centaur seems interesting. I know its 6 mana for a 5/5, but in G/r devotion, where mana comes in abundance, a way to creature more tokens could possibly see play... maybe?
The Centaur is the perfect card for an agro deck vs. control. Drop him T3 and you don't need to drop another creature until it's dealt with. Or drop it after a Verdict and you build your horde for the cost of only 1 card.
Well, there are things to note with this: (1) you must choose an opponent and (2) there are no other opponents to choose from.
Now, it would reasonable that you could do without the formality of choosing an opponent and everyone can infer that you are choosing your only opponent at the table. That sounds like a reasonable shortcut.
I am asking this because it seems like a really easy way for your opponent to gimmick you out of the tribute trigger.
My basic question is: Once someone plays a card with the Tribute mechanic, what is the least they have to do if anything to annouce it. I just want to make damn sure I'm not screwed over by someone playing tribute. If they are required to only say something like "Is this ok", basically giving you priority, I want to make damn sure I know what cards have tribute on them so I don't miss my trigger.
When you play a card with tribute, what do you have to announce if anything when the card comes into play.
Do you have to announce the tribute trigger? Can you just say trigger after it comes in play or can you just pass priority to your opponent? Or do you have to say something like "I choose you for the tribute trigger"?
I think the reality is that magic has power creeped a long way since juzam djinn was playable. Juzam was a 5/5 for 4 with a minor drawback, this is a 5/5 flying for 4 with a somewhat bigger but still not harsh drawback. Its not all that better than a juzam, and this is 2014 Not that long ago we were getting a 5/5 flying haste for 5 with a *huge upside* rather than drawback, and it was the same clock as this on curve. Now maybe RtR to Theros will be the fabled great depowering of homelands/masques/kamigawa #4. But I doubt it.
Wait it has a drawback? WTF!!??!! This thing has no drawback, it's weakest state is a 5/5 flyer for 2:symr::symr:. What's the drawback here? If tribute isn't paid, it's a 3/3 Haste recurring threat for 2:symr::symr:.
I can't believe there are a bunch of you that think a 5/5 FLYING creature for 2:symr::symr: is bad and isn't going to see play.
WHAT? It's costed less than it's power/toughness and it flies so it has evasion. It's a GREAT card with the upside of it possibly getting Hast and recurrsion.
My next question is, do you have to announce Tribute? Because I can definitely see people playing Tribute cards, not announcing them and if their opponent misses the trigger, bam instant upside.

B/W Midrange, U/W Control and Esper Control
-2 Shock, -4 Searing Blood / +4 Firedrinker Satyr, +1 Skullcrack, +1 Warleader's Helix

This is what I was playing.
4 Shock
4 Magma Jet
4 Lightning Strike
4 Searing Blood
4 Boros Charm
3 Skullcrack
3 Warleader's Helix
3 Young Pyromancer
4 Satyr Firedancer
4 Chandra's Phoenix
4 Sacred Foundry
4 Temple of Triumph
3 Mutavault
2 Temple of Silence
1 Temple of Malice
1 Skullcrack
2 Oracle of Bones
2 Flame-Wreathed Phoenix
3 Toil/Trouble
3 Chained to the Rocks
4 Firedrinker Satyr

This is what I was playing.
4 Shock
4 Magma Jet
4 Lighting Strike
4 Searing Blood
4 Boros Charm
3 Skullcrack
3 Warleader's Helix
3 Young Pyromancer
4 Satyr Firedancer
4 Chandra's Phoenix
4 Scared Foundry
4 Temple of Triumph
3 Mutavault
2 Temple of Silence
1 Temple of Malice
1 Skullcrack
2 Oracle of Bones
2 Flame-Wreathed Phoenix
3 Toil/Trouble
3 Chained to the Rocks
4 Firedrinker Satyr
Round 2 vs. Boros Burn
Game 1 - I have what I think is a great opening hand, Mountain, Temple of Triumph, 2x Mutavault, Satyr Firedancer, Boros Charm and Skullcrak.
Game 1 - I lose as he goes finds a Polukranos that I can't deal with. Sadly I should have won this game as I made a play error. He ate a dead elf with his Ooze and in response I should have Skullcracked him but forgot and did it end of turn. Round 8 I draw with my opponent.
I make T8 at the 8th slot and have to play Mono U round 1.

The Centaur is the perfect card for an agro deck vs. control. Drop him T3 and you don't need to drop another creature until it's dealt with. Or drop it after a Verdict and you build your horde for the cost of only 1 card.
Could a mod move this to new card discussion.
Wait it has a drawback? WTF!!??!! This thing has no drawback, it's weakest state is a 5/5 flyer for 2:symr::symr:. What's the drawback here? If tribute isn't paid, it's a 3/3 Haste recurring threat for 2:symr::symr:.
Abhorrent Overlord was a house.
