I'm currently an Eldrazi & Taxes player and I'm interested in the BW Eldrazi Midrange build to shake things up. As my LGS packs tones of midrange decks, I figured having access to this version would be a way to adjust to my meta within the same card pool.
From my experience playing midrange decks like Grixis Death's Shadow and BW Tokens, 6 discard spells are awesome. I'm opting to favor 1 mana spells instead of Tidehollow Scullers, as I find the latter somewhat clunky with this manabase. Speed also helps. I'm also not sure about the number of relics maindeck. I see the consensus is 4, but shouldn't 3 be enough, specially when you don't want to draw multiples?
I'm also curious about the options between Reality Smasher and Blight Herder. Which one seems to be more successful in the current meta? Eldrazi Displacer seems uncommon, despite the clear value of blinking Wasteland Strangler and TKS. What is your experience with the card and why should we move away from it?
I know this will sound heretic, but hear me out. I've been playing with Mishra's Baubles in place of Thought Scours. I know the biggest downside of the slow cantrip is drawing it in topdeck wars, but otherwise the card has so many great interactions with Street Wraiths, fetchlands and Fatal Pushes. What I like the most about it is that I can freely cycle it in the early turns and dump my mana on discard and serum visions instead. I had no problems casting turn 2 Tasigurs and Anglers by just developing my plan. Also noteworthy is that I managed to have a functioning deck with only 2 lands in play. These land short hands are really rewarded by Bauble, while Scours often feel trapped in my hand.
Since I didn't see any mention to Bauble in the primer I figure I'd ask about it. Did anyone else give it a go? Are the disadvantages too big to be worth it?
Even in BW builds you're not supposed to keep regular hands. Of course, mulling for stony silences isn't obligatory, but keeping a considerable amount of removal is. The affinity matchup is the only reason why I switched back to 2 Zealous Persecutions instead of Orzhov Pontiffs. An unanswered Overseer is often enough to steal the game, unless you managed to get a crazy chain of Flickerwisps and Displacers until you find removal.
I'd say it is very safe to mull to 6 if your opening hand isn't particularly good vs Affinity. Mulls below that number are always risky.
As for sideboard slots, I've seen people packing 2-3 Stony Silences + 1 Kataki, resembling splits between RiPs and Cages for GY hate. Is Sunlance enough help for Mono W builds?
Quick Modern night report, went 1-3. Faced Esper Zur (2-1), Scapeshift (0-2), UW Control (1-2), Amulet Titan (0-2).
I Really felt the variance last night. Against Scapeshift I lost g1 due to not seeing any threats, despite going through a good chuck of my deck. G2 I keep a 1 lander with cyclers, and I never saw the second one. Had a great opening line with Seize + Surgical on my opponent's Titan that slowed him down enough for the game to go turn 6+. Against Amulet on g2, 3 turns of Thoughtseize didn't stop the singleton Chameleon Colossus on top of my opponent's deck. Oh well.
These parings really punish the deck and they are not necessarily representative of my meta. Another player faced 4 matches of Burn, for example. It may be the case for packing Disdainful Strokes on my SB. Is holding a 2 mana counterspell clunky when we're usually operating on 3 mana? Do you guys recommend reevaluating strategies or giving it another go?
Also, how often do you get punished by keeping a hand with no big threats, but lots of cantrips?
I've been playing with 2 TBR main deck in the following configuration for a while now. Really happy to see the card when I have any meaningful board presence. Works well to clock Eldrazi Tron even when cast on a Tasigur. I had similar blowout plays of attacking with a 5/5 Shadow that turned out to be lethal after the opponent declined to block. These 2 TBR copies only feel dead when you're really looking for answers. I'm unsure if the full playset of Stubborn Denials are needed to support TBR.
I'm reworking my sideboard for BW E&T. 3 Thoughtseizes seem to be occupying too much space for an effect that is not particularly well positioned. This is my current sideboard.
My meta has a good amount of GBx decks, so the matchup is expected. Otherwise, it is a very diverse LGS with Shadow, Storm, Dredge, UW Control, Burn, Eldrazi Tron, and other archetypes. Given the problematic Dredge matchup, I'm considering ticking GY hate to at least 3 copies. GBx decks can be further addressed by a copy of Gideon, Ally of Zendikar.
I'm wondering if I should go for 3 Rest in Peaces or 2 RiPs + 2 Cages. If I opt for the 3rd RiP I'm inclined to add the 3rd Stony Silence on my last slot. Also, since so many decks depend on their GY status (that is, Cages don't stop Goyfs, Delve creatures, Delirum and the like) I'm wondering if the correct split is 2 RiP + 2 Relics. Any suggestions?
Also, the UW Control matchup (specially builds with multiple Gideons) seems to be miserable. Any viable gameplan besides going full tempo with our taxing creatures?
Any updates on your BW Eldrazi & Taxes lists? I was running a playset of Thraben Inspectors, but they had mediocre results. They are often just over costed cantrips. The deck is so tight on mana that actively flickering/blinking them to crack clues is very rare.
With a replacement in mind, I decided to do some digging on mtgtop8 stats. Mind you, I'm just presenting a broad picture of their records of 2 months of play. I don't think any of my conclusions should be set in stone and I'm looking forward to your feedback on these insights. This is what we see:
. Out of the 33 results posted on mtgtop8 under hatebears, 16 correspond to the E&T archetype!
. Lands vary between 22 and 24. Only 2 lists deviate from 22.
. Most lands are consensual except for the 22nd. The last land is either a Godless Shrine, a Wastes, a Sea Gate Wreckage, or the third Shambling Vent. The deck that goes for 24 lands due to Reality Smashers opts for 2 Fetid Heaths instead.
. The flex slots on the main are the following: The 4th Thalia, Guardian of Thraben, 2-3 Dark Confidants, 2-3 Reality Smashers for those who go big on lands, and an assortment of meta specific cards. Overall, between extra lands and meta specific calls, these slots cover 4 to 8 cards. Those who stick to maxing out core cards (3 Wasteland Stranglers and Thalia, Guardian of Thraben, 4-ofs for the rest of the core cards) usually have 4 slots.
. Bobs or no Bobs? Out of the 16 lists, 13 opted for running 2-3 Bobs. The majority (8) sticks to 2 copies. For those who are not a fan of greatness at any cost, another card fills the "value" slot: 1-2 Blade Splicers, 2 Kitchen Finks, and even 2 Wall of Omens.
. Sideboards are much harder to analyze. People agree on just a few cards: don't go out without packing at least 2 Rest in Peace, 2 Stony Silences, and 3-5 removal effects such as Fatal Push, Dismember, Blessed Alliance, Zealous Persecutions, Wasteland Strangler, and Orzhov Pontiffs. 1-2 Gideon, Ally of Zendikar seems to be the go-to answer to midrange matchups.
I hope this is a helpful summary for those of you tinkering with the deck! Let me know your thoughts!
That's a great idea! I'll be experimenting on replacing my playset of Thraben Inspectors with those. Managed to sneak in a couple of draws against Esper Control. Having a full playset really adds consistency.
On Mono White Eldrazi & Taxes,
I'm tinkering with the following list. Shefet Dunes really smooth out the manabase for colorless requirements. I'm unsure if I'm using the flex slots in the most efficient way, specially the two drop slot.
I've been playing the following BW Eldrazi & Taxes list. Thraben Inspectors are no Dark Confidants, but they are a nice addition to the deck. As usual, the most troublesome aspect of the deck is its inconsistent manabase.
I was wondering if there is a consensual stock list for Mono White Eldrazi & Taxes, or at least main core cards that we can't miss. What would you recommend?
Decided to pick up the BW Eldrazi & Taxes deck for a PPTQ at my LGS. There were 80+ players and 7 rounds of Swiss. I finished 4-3, just one victory short of top 16 (for prize purposes).
This has long been a pet deck of mine, and I'd like to know how to tweak it for the current meta. In a nutshell, I won against Ad Nauseam, Abzan Delirium, GW CoCo Knight, and Boros Burn. My 3 losses were Skred Red (Blood Moons lol), Grixis Shadow, and Affinity.
Curiously enough, I was anticipating the Grixis Shadow and Affinity matchups, setting up my sideboard accordingly (pro black creatures and RiP for Shadow, Zealous Persecutions and Stony Silences for Affinity). I feel happy with the sideboard as it is, save for the 3rd Reality Smasher. The Shadow matchup seems particularly problematic as the sideboard cards are silver bullets that can be truly game changing. Otherwise it is hard to compete with shadows + removals. I'm also conflicted about Smashers in the main deck. They saved me a turn on the Ad Nauseam matchup and almost gave me a win against Affinity, but in other matchups they often stay stuck in my hand due to mana cost. Floods are also particularly miserable for my shell, as I have no card advantage whatsoever.
I see current lists shaving a land down to 22, playing a full playset of Concealed Courtyard and playing Bobs instead of Smashers. Are there any other interesting options for an Eldrazi & Taxes shell? As usual, 1 drops seem to be particularly lacking in the deck. Could Thraben Inspectors be helpful?
Long time lurker here, It's been a month or so since I finished assembling the deck, recently went to a LGS and had a blast at a modern league, going 3-1 and finishing 3rd. The matchups were: 2-0 Merfolk with a G splash for Collected Company, 1-2 Eldrazi Tron, 2-0 Naya Burn, 2-1 Abzan Melira Company. I love the deck, coming from Grixis Delver this feels much more powerful.
I find it impressive that the meta has been stabilizing on a main deck list close to mine, bar 4 Scalding Tarns & 2 Blood Crypts. However, GP results point to adjustments in the sideboard. At least 2 Ceremonious Rejections seem to be the way to go, specially considering I'm dealing with Tron in my meta anyways. I'm curious on Mattia Pizzi's option of not sideboarding Fulminator Mages at all. Is a flurry of Ceremonious Rejections enough to stop Tron?
On another note, I find 2 Liliana, the Last Hope incredibly versatile and powerful, the ability to grind and ping small creatures in a single card defines sideboard material. Engineered Explosives is my less efficient catch-all answer to things on the battlefield. Among it's many utilities, it could improve our chances against Chalice of the Void if our opponent does not play around it and have no Chalices for zero. Bonus points for cleaning the annoying Walking Ballistas.

All the best,

2 Tasigur, the Golden Fang
2 Gurmag Angler
4 Snapcaster Mage
4 Street Wraith

2 Stubborn Denial
2 Stubborn Denial
1 Countersquall
2 Collective Brutality
2 Liliana, the Last Hope
2 Engineered Explosives
3 Fulminator Mage
3 Surgical Extraction
I want to run this sideboard for my next games:
2 Collective Brutality
2 Liliana, the Last Hope
2 Engineered Explosives
3 Surgical Extraction
2 Ceremonious Rejection
2 Fulminator Mage
Any suggestions and advices are welcome. What's your strategy against Eldrazi Tron compared to regular Gx Tron?
