So I've been struggling super hard vs our GR brother. In fact It's the only matchup I have yet to win I'm starting to think k it's my list but the local tron players in my area have discovered world breaker is a huge problem that I just can't answer efficiently.
Chalice on 1 is good but they always have scrying in hand vs me.
I tried both Squelch and trickbind to no success.
Jesters cap never did enough even when I was able to recur it with ruins.
Here's my list. Also how should I board for the matchup? It's always had me a little lost.
I dont want to sound mean but maybe its a piloting issue? are you making the correct plays at the correct time? we have a really great matchup against them? i dont understand how you couldnt of atleast beaten them once? maybe your not playing the matchup correctly? just practice more this deck rewards tight gameplay and the more you use it the better it will get. also study your meta. a good control player has too study the decks he is vsing to be effective. try the talisman build as well. you do realise if you run solemn simulacrum and talisman of dominance you are actually capable of ramping harder then G/R Tron right? solemn simulacrum is better then TKS look up shoktroopas list. it performs better. also run a minimum of 3x repeals and spacial contortion is terrible against them. also run another ghost quarter or put a crucible in sideboard so that you can recur it. tron only runs a maximum of 2 forests anyway so after that they become strip mines. also i dont see squelch or spreading sea's in your sideboard? those cards are amazing against them.
How do you find this to be a favorable matchup for us? We stall, they ramp into cards that can sometimes finish us with cast triggers alone. Mono-U Tron cannot contain RG Tron beyond the first several turns. Remand is miserable against them, their one mana ramp spells easily sneak under all of our counters, and since we take so long to close out the game they don't even need to ramp all that hard, as they use that pace to their advantage. And don't even bother trying to outramp them, as that deck is built to Tron out as fast as possible, and even if you do manage to sneak in a Wurmcoil before they land any of their finishers, it's not going to do much against the Karn or Eldrazi cast triggers that are to soon follow.
So our usual game doesn't work, and we're outmatched if we try to play their's- what's left to do? Well, you can get lucky with your early draws and counter their attempts to Tron out. It's not going to stop them, but if they miss enough on natural land drops it can buy you some time. You can hope they just get unlucky with their draws, as most of our cards bounce off their threats like rubber bullets in the later game. You can try to creature kill, but trying to 'aggro' them (in our own pathetic way) means either tapping out and just hoping they don't play Karn, or holding up counter-magic and giving them more time out-ramp us (and then losing to cast triggers anyway). Outside of luck and outside of creatures, then, your best actual strategy is to just Slaver lock them as fast as possible, as it just ends the game before it grows out of your control and is a combo they have no way of interacting with.
It may not be as downright unwinnable as this overview might make it sound, especially in light of the bannings, but the last thing I would call this match is 'really great.'
Wow. are you serious?
R/G tron is powerful for 1 reason only: Its consistency!
RG Tron is all about consistency. turn 3 or 4 tron every game right?
what could we possibly do against a deck that powerful?
hmmmm.
Wait a second.
every single cantrip in there deck is a 1 drop?
and every single method of getting tron turn 3 is a 1 drop except sylvan scrying you say?
Way too many individual points to address in one post, so I'm just going to focus on what seems to be the basis behind most others: RG Tron's consistency. It's consistent at being explosive, which means it generates 7-8 mana and lands a top of the curve finisher often while their opponent's are just beginning to assemble their gameplan, but it doesn't need to be explosive against us because they know their threats, in addition to being much more powerful than ours, can wreck us on cast triggers alone, and they have all the time in the world to get there because Mono-U Tron tries to play out over the long game. How many times has your opponent said 'cast trigger' while you're gripping Remand, Repeal, or even a hard counter like Condescend? You're in trouble no matter what.
If you want a recent-ish example of why we have such a hard time playing our game against RG, look at how Esper Dragons faired off against Eldrazi Ramp in standard: it just has no game. Esper can't control cast-trigger ramp, especially in the long game and when those cast triggers (now) exile one of their lands. Their only hope is to slam a turn five Ojutai and hope they can ride it out ahead of Ulamog. Not exactly Esper's usual game, but you can't play your usual game when it's doomed to failure: you have to scramble for your outs and end the game fast as you can. Their 'I play Infinite Obliteration' is our 'I play Spreading Seas;' you need to draw it, you're dead without it, and even then you're still dead in one or two other ways.
So you can Remand all the Sylvan Scrying you want, Repeal all the Chromatic Stars you want, and you can even slam a Chalice on 1 and have a perma-counter for all those one mana ramp spells: it's not going to make a difference, RG Tron always has inevitability over us in the long game unless their natural draws suck or we Slaver lock them before they get out of control. If you counter their ramp spells and their draws are really bad, you can sometimes get their with Wurmcoil or Sundering Titan, but I can tell you the one thing a RG Tron player is happiest to see is when their opponent goes turn 1 Island into Expedition Map. If they go off early, they win. If we try to go long, they win. Anyone who claims to have an amazing matchup against RG Tron is either facing bad opponents or just deluding themselves.
what the hell man?
so apparently either im deluded or face terrible opponents?
Im guessing you lose alot to this deck?
Im sorry but your wrong mate. I honestly do win against R/G tron 80% of the time.
and it is not "consistently explosive" any time ive come up against it.
for the reasons i posted.
we can counter a third of their deck with 1 card and force them to only draw for 1 card per turn in there draw phase and never tutor for anything ever again?
that also means that atleast a third of their draws will be useless.
we can keep them off of tron laughably well.
Whiich means they can do nothing to directly effect us except wurmcoil engine turn 6.
which is pretty pathetic considering we have basically won the game at that point.
your the one deluding yourself.
there are 7 people who play R/g tron at my local gameshop. all of them are good players. did you even read my whole post? we can keep them off of tron!
Sideboard properly! ffs I am neither deluded or facing bad opponents.
maybe you have just lost against it alot and have a "deluded" sense of how good it is! it is a sorcery speed deck ffs, they are very easy to disrupt and if you have a chalice of the void on one then they are incredibly easy to keep off of tron.
because they cant dig for it anymore.
They get stuck to drawing 1 card per turn in there draw phase and if it isnt the perfect tron land they are ***** outta luck.
this match up is ridiculous the only way they can even win is if they have all three tron lands in there hand and we somehow fail to have ghost quarter or have a spreading seas.
and then play t3 karn into t4 ulamog.
that is literally the only scenario i can think of where they can beat us. what kind of list are you running?
you saying that im deluded or vsing bad opponents is insulting and just wrong. this matchup is easy! how many times have you even played it? ive played this matchup literally hundreds of games with people at my gamestore!
They hate vsing Utron.
And dude honestly try my suggestions. The matchup post sideboarding with my advice may actually surprise you.
We are on the same team man. we are both U Tron players.
instead of just scoffing and dismissing everything i have said how about actually trying it?
By the way for sideboarding purposes you take out ugin, sundering titan, platinum angel, and 2 maps, 3 remands.
to put in. 3 squelch, 3 spreading seas, crucible of worlds, jesters cap.
It also comes down to how you actually play. if we are on the play and we repeal their turn 1 expedition map on our second turn it means on their turn 2 they cant even crack map. which basically makes it a time walk draw a card. same thing with spreading seas. hold them off tron for another turn draw a card.
And chalice on 1 really does destroy them if you actively keep them off tron its ridiculous. because that is also there only method of digging for threats which means they are stuck to just whatever they draw every turn in their draw phase.
which actually gives us time to jesters cap away all there ulamogs.
@kharniverous give me some support here buddy how do you beat R/G Tron

Wait a second.
every single cantrip in there deck is a 1 drop?
and every single method of getting tron turn 3 is a 1 drop except sylvan scrying you say?
Lets have a look at the cards that make RG tron consistent
x4 chromatic star (1 drop)
x4 chromatic sphere (1 drop)
x4 expedition map (1 drop)
x4 ancient stirrings (1 drop)
x4 relic of progenitus (1 drop)
are you telling me that 20 of the cards in there deck are 1 drops?
and all of those cards are what allows the deck to function and be good?
soo if i drop a chalice of the void on 1 and then 1 for 20 them how do they achieve tron?
oh thats right sylvan scrying. ( um counter spells?)
If you keep them off tron they cant do anything until turn 6 that actually affects us?and thats if they secure a land drop every single turn which is no longer guaranteed because we just took away 20 of there methods of getting lands.
we have chalice of the void to 1 for 20 them!!!!! 20!!! that is a third of there deck we just countered with 1 card.
we have 3x spreading seas to keep them off tron and draw a card.
we have ghost quarter/ tec edge with crucible to make sure they never have it.
we have 3x squelch to counter Karn activations but also star, sphere, map, ghost quarter, 0-stone, relic, (draw a card)
we have counterspells.
If you run gemstone caverns and get lucky on the play you can drop chalice of the void on 1 on your first turn.
we also have jesters cap. which is basically pay 6 mana look through there library and exile 3 threats. and then recur it with ruins. so every turn you exile 3 ulamogs or 3 karns. wurmcoil really isnt even scary and they have no way of recurring it like we do.
If they play spellskite and we slaver them even once they die.
also RG tron doesnt actually have any (ramp) apart from the tron engine itself. the stars and spheres dont actually give them extra mana. and they dont play extra lands each turn.
( we actually do ramp with solemn simulacrum and talisman.)
A friend of mine plays RG tron its his fav deck in the world but a few weeks ago we played 14 games and i won 12 of them. and he is very good player he has played it for 2 years.
we have an extremely good matchup against them!!!
the only card in the deck that can even give us a super rough time is Ulamog and occasionally worldbreaker.
but have you not been reading what i just told you about keeping them off tron? where will they get 10 mana before we destroy them?
Alot of people tend to think that R/G tron is more powerful then Utron but its not!
Its just more popular and alot easier to play.
you dont even have to be a good magic player to win with R/g tron. you barely even have to think while playing.
Mono U tron is a control deck though. and it is the number 1 deck (win percentage wise) on mtgo!!!
what happens quite often is someone who cant play control for ***** will pick up the deck and expect it to play the same way r/g tron does and then lose.
And then they will go around saying that R/g tron is better or more powerful. because they cant pilot the deck properly.
This deck is not super easy to play. it requires you to practice and think, and actually be a good control player. it requires you to study the meta. so you know what actually makes other decks good and not just focus on the famous cards. so you actually know what to counter and what to bounce. when to activate your cards and when not to.
So based on the fact that unless they have natural tron in hand. ( granted it does occasionally happen.) that we can actually shut down a third of their deck with 1 card, and take away every shred of consistency in the deck that actually allows them to play their threats. and then perpetually keep them off tron?
how exactly is this a bad match up?
I literally win against R/G Tron 80% of the time. they are almost a buy.
Do i think we have a great matchup against them? No.
The guy playing trading post tron also makes a few obviously bad decisions. like he leads with tower everytime he has it. tower should be the last land you place if you can fix it that way. some people say it doesnt make a difference but it does in your opponents mind. magic is not just playing decks you have to play your opponent.
its not bad against aggro though. gaining 4 is very relevant. but bottle gnomes lets you block and then sac to gain 3. its better IMO.
Hey guys, long time Jund/k player joining this side. Built the SaffronOlive deck last week and its all finally arrived. Going to be playing the Trading Post/Spine version until i can get the Chalice's i need for real U Tron.
the chalices are super powerful but even a normal build without chalice is still better then trading post tron. i watched the videos for it on mtggoldfish's youtube channel but im not impressed. it looks fun but its too slow and way to cute for competitive play. if you wanted a recur-able effect with spine of ish sah then krark clan ironworks would be better. you could sac spine whenever you want and get 2 mana then spine automatically goes back to your hand. and now that you have 2 mana floating then spine only really costs 5. or you could sac kci to itself as well to make it only cost 3 if you absolutely had to then put kci on top of your library with academy. but the build performs far below real U tron.
So I've been struggling super hard vs our GR brother. In fact It's the only matchup I have yet to win I'm starting to think k it's my list but the local tron players in my area have discovered world breaker is a huge problem that I just can't answer efficiently.

and hitting all their cantrips and everything that gets them lands is a huge setback for them. the reason R/G tron is powerful is because of its consistency. but all of those 1 drops i named are the reason they are consistent. if you take all of those away the only other way of getting tron they have is sylvan scrying which we can just easily counter. they also get cut off of 8 sources of colored mana. your stopping them from digging your keeping them off tron and all you had to do was play chalice of the void on 1
ghost quarter or tec edge is also your friend here along with spreading seas. if they happen to naturally have tron for 1 turn and try to cast karn just counter him or let him resolve in which case they will try to -3 and you can just squelch it and draw a card then kill him next turn.
for R/G to beat us they have to have extremely lucky draws and we have to play extremely badly.
but sometimes they are on the play and have natural tron another tower and ulamog and they just have it.
Hi guys, any suggestions on how to beat Eldrazitron or GR tron?
Thanks in advance.
play chalice of the void on 1 against r/g tron.
it hits relic of progenitus, chromatic star. chromatic sphere. ancient stirrings. natures claim. and expedition maps. you can literally 1 for 20 them.
And if you play spreading seas you can keep them off tron and draw a card.
Squelch is great vs o-stone, karn, expedition map, chromatic star, chromatic sphere and relic of progenitus.
You can also counter every threat in deck except emrakul, and ulamog is really the only terrifying card apart from karn.
if you run jesters cap in sideboard then use it to hit there three ulamogs, and then recurr it to hit karns or ugins then wurmcoils. and they have a hard time winning against us. it is literally a really good matchup for us.
Although i will admit they sometime's just get nut draws and win.
But seriously dont doubt the deck man we have a really strong matchup against them.
I have a friend who loves tron and plays R/G tron and U/W tron and i stomp both decks. his u/w list only runs 4 counterspells and we have a great matchup against R/G.
the other day we played 14 games and i won 12 of them.
who keeps leaking these awesome lists!??! I have been dead to the world lately as i think someone cast a haywire grenade on my computer.. Windows 10 is the equivalent of aids. I'll get it fixed and get a stream going soon in the very near future.. I have not abandoned the deck nor of any of you . I promise.
nice list man! how does it feel with less squelch in your SB though? i always run 3? sweet deck though man. i may make an adjustment and give gemstone caverns a go?
Whats up guys? I've recently ben playing this deck A LOT. I've had it built online for a while but never really played it. I'm more of a combo kinda guy. Recently I decided I should man up and actually try playing some magic so I busted this deck out and holy crap I've been having fun with it. Im going through some growing pains but I'm learning all the tricks and what cards are good against what decks. This is seriously one of the most rewarding decks I've ever played. But I can't seem to figure out how to beat GR tron. It's too consistent and too fast for me. Anyone have any tips or know what are some good sideboard cards other than pithing needle? That's another card that this deck has showed me how strong it really is.
play chalice of the void on 1 against r/g tron. it hits relic of progenitus, chromatic star. chromatic sphere. ancient stirrings. natures claim. and expedition maps. you can literally 1 for 20 them. and if you play spreading seas you can keep them off tron and draw a card. squelch is great vs o-stone, karn, expedition map, chromatic star, chromatic sphere and relic of progenitus. you can also counter every threat in deck except emrakul, and ulamog is really the only terrifying card apart from karn. if you run jesters cap in sideboard then use it to hit there three ulamogs and they have a hard time winning against us. it is literally a really good matchup for us.
Want to know what people here would side in vs a few matchups. Namely Jund and Abzan, which i feel should be good matchups for me, but i have a hard time. Also merfolk and UW Hatebears are tough. There are no affinity or burn decks in my meta, so no hurkyll's or bottle gnomes. There are a nice handful of Infect and Bogle decks so I bring a nice amount of sb hate.
Also thinking of cutting a wurmcoil and maybe something else sb for squelch after reading ebksicc's post.
i would take out 2 tks for 2 solemn simulacrum that way they get less value out of killing your creatures you can ramp/ fix and when somlemn dies you draw a card.and i would add a second mindslaver because they play scavenging ooze. i would also cut 1 epiphany for a 3rd repeal.repeal is great against these decks. also with your sideboard i would definitely cut 2 or 3 cards for 2 or 3 squelch. squelch is myu favourite sideboard card for sure. you can hit fetchland. lilliana triggers / ultimates. fulminator mage triggers. scooze triggers. kalitas triggers. also i would put c rift main. remember this is a control deck. we want our opponents to waste resources. im fine with a jund or abzan player playing tarmogoyf just so that i can bounce it and draw a card. i run a list almost identical to shoktroopas current one and i win 4 out of 5 games against jund and abzan.
so apparently either im deluded or face terrible opponents?
Im guessing you lose alot to this deck?

I will admit it looks fun though.
ghost quarter or tec edge is also your friend here along with spreading seas. if they happen to naturally have tron for 1 turn and try to cast karn just counter him or let him resolve in which case they will try to -3 and you can just squelch it and draw a card then kill him next turn.
for R/G to beat us they have to have extremely lucky draws and we have to play extremely badly.
but sometimes they are on the play and have natural tron another tower and ulamog and they just have it.
it hits relic of progenitus, chromatic star. chromatic sphere. ancient stirrings. natures claim. and expedition maps. you can literally 1 for 20 them.
