The article on Modern Nexus is ignorant. The guy has probably never played WITH Soul Sisters, or if he did, he played it wrong. A lot of players in this forum have had a lot of success against Ad Nauseam and Jund, especially. Affinity is too fast? This guy must have been a Twin player who lost to Soul Sisters once. I agree that it's a better support color, but we are beating Infect a lot, too.
Kind of makes me angry, and makes me want to comment on his article. I remember when Twin was banned, and the Modern Nexus web site was doom and gloom and seemed extremely whiny because they were wrong about their ban predictions. These people just aren't credible.

BoBoCTiberius posted a message on [Primer] Soul SistersI don't think we should make decisions based on other decks. That green stompy list can rip up some matchups and you have to realize that if we sit across from our best matchups all night, we can run hot, too.Posted in: Aggro & Tempo
I wouldn't make deck building decisions based on the mill deck in the format, but if you're really seeing it a lot, monowhite with Mistveil Plains gets solid. -

BoBoCTiberius posted a message on [Primer] Soul SistersSomething to keep in mind is that, unless your meta is a lot of Zoo and Burn, the current meta is very unfriendly to our deck, which might skew results. Perfect time for testing more bizarre builds. The only thing about posting weird builds is that some people, particularly mods, get really antsy about things being off topic. I don't particularly care and really think the deck needs innovation to work in today's meta.Posted in: Aggro & Tempo -

Xarnithru posted a message on [Primer] Soul SistersThoughtseize is hard to play against, and it, Lili, and burn spells all get walled by hexproof. However, all these things come down before turns 4-5, which means the orbs are too slow to combat them. You need turn zero protection in the form of Leyline, if hexproof is something you decide is important. The cards are still around $10 now, and they've previously been as high as 30, so it seems like a safe buy.Posted in: Aggro & Tempo -

Xarnithru posted a message on [Primer] Soul SistersIt's an eternal struggle that the sideboard is only 15 slots. You really have to focus only on the highest impact cards, the "I win" cards like Stony Silence or RiP. I think you could definitely cut those Orbs; they're a great deal less useful than Leylines and not as synergistic as Mindcensors and Abolishers (ie: orbs are not white creatures). But if it were 20 slots, midrange would absolutely stomp everything.Posted in: Aggro & Tempo
As for tuning those last mainboard slots, there are some solid lists on this primer. If you haven't built and practiced the deck to a significant degree yet, you may find it most useful to just netdeck a "vanilla" list and jam some games. That way, you can figure out which direction you want take the deck from there.
Rune-tail seems a bit shaky, but obviously powerful. I hesitate to play a 3 drop that dies to every 1-2 mana removal spell in modern, but I wouldn't tell you not to test it. Relying on a heuristic like "does it pass the bolt test" is how you miss possible new innovations. -

Xarnithru posted a message on [Primer] Soul Sisters@MatsuriFramboise yep you have a ton going on in your maindeck. You didn't mention your plains count, but the spells you listed add up to 46, which leaves room for only 14 land, less than what Affinity plays (and they don't have any 5-drops). Unless your deck is >60 cards?Posted in: Aggro & Tempo
The thing to remember about Sisters is that it's a linear deck, not a midrange one. Jund has a ton of flex slots, and Death & Taxes can customize their bears and add things like Grand Abolisher, but Soul Sisters is under the same umbrella as Burn or Affinity or Infect. It has a very specific gameplan that requires a critical mass of the right synergistic pieces. Therefore, there's very little wiggle room in the main, maybe 2 slots tops. It hurts, but if you want a functioning classic sisters deck, you need to cut all those spicy creatures, or move them to the SB, and play at least 21 land, more if you want to cast Ranger/Archangel reliably. If you really want to play Mindcensors and Abolishers and Mirran Crusaders maindeck, the only way is Hatebears/D&T. - To post a comment, please login or register a new account.

But, it's a deck I love to play and hate to face. Load up on Ghost Quarters and Surgical Extractions

Glad to see that my views on SS vs. Jund remain unshaken, however! I seriously do think it's one of our better matchups. Nicely done against the resident expert!

1W, First Strike, Lifelink 1/1 that flips into a First Strike, Trample, Lifelink 4/4 if you gained 3 or more life during your turn.
I'm loving this concept-- I'm really happy that they're giving some effects that involve lifegain-based triggers-- but sadly I guess this is too situational for us and it's not affected by Honor of the Pure after it flips since it loses White. Though I can't help but like it a little as a mini-Ascendant that doesn't require 30+ life.

Game 1: vs Merfolk, 2-1
I've never actually faced Merfolk before. Wasn't so bad, but I can tell that either he had some really bad draws, or just was not a seasoned pilot of the deck. Stony Silence shut down Aether Vial, but I still lost that round. But won rounds 1 and 3!
Game 2: vs Jeskai Ascendancy, 0-2
I've finally found a deck that I hate facing more than 8-Rack. So damn miserable. He was so slow, and his combo took almost 20 minutes for a single turn. I was so mad by the end. But I didn't want to let him just have the win. If I had to suffer through his boring snoozefest deck, so did he.
Game 3: vs Norin Sisters, 2-0
I actually felt bad for this dude, because his deck had a ton of potential, but it was unfinished. He was a fun pseudo-mirror to play against though.
Final Game: vs... Blue/Black Ninjas or something 2-0
This guy had some pretty rough combos, but he fizzled out both rounds. In the second round, he was able to kill off all of my creatures, but I brought them all back at once with Return to the Ranks, scoring the final win.
Final Rank: 4th of 18
