@Auron: I love the idea of "Back in Black" in honor of black knight. We should wait a little though, we might get a few black bombs in M10. *Hopes Phyrexian Arena, Dark Confidant, or Damnation gets reprinted*

@Contest: I have no idea who to vote out, but it seems Dimir are voting for us for the most absurd reason ever, and the NYC dark knights want us out regardless of criteria.:-/ Annoying, but alas, unavoidable.

@M10: I love the idea of it (no more half-assed excuses to justify printing extra cards), and new cards in it makes it awesome. Silence is intriguing though... that "cast" seems odd, and I definetely look forward to the explanation behind it.

I'm planning to bring this deck to Sunday's GPT. However, I don't know whether use Ethersworn Canonist or Rule of Law in my sideboard. Ethersworn Canonist is faster, is a 2/2 beatstick, and doesn't hamper my deck as much, since I'm playing quite a few Artifacts already. On the other hand, Rule of Law is more durable and also helps in my match-up with Affinity. Comments?

I like your list, its very similar to the one I posted a while back. I'd personally replace the fetid heaths with Caves of Koilos, as I find that the ability to add W or B on turn one acording to your needs is better in the current metagame.

4 Smother, 4 PtE and 3 SB Disenchant seems more than enough affinity hate, so I'd probably cut the Katakis in favor of something against other match-ups.

I already stated my prefference for Rule of Law over canonist here.

You might want to remove a Warchief and a Lord to add two Death Barons. The deathtouch ability can be very useful at times, stopping 5/6 goyfs and forcing troll ascetics to regenerate twice in order to survive. He's also very synergistic with Stillmoon Cavalier.

Depending on how aggro you want to go, Wretched Anurid is an often overlooked option. He used to be a 4-of in my deck, until I splashed white for Sculler and PtE. Having a 3/3 on T2 (or 1, in your case) compensates for the slight drawback, and increases the speed of the deck.

Carrion Feeder is also something to consider, seeing as he turns all your would-be-dead creatures into +1/+1 counters for him, and turns Tidehollow Sculler into a super-castigate that can be recurred.

@Beinghumanbeing: Thanks for the concern, and yes, the military here in Colombia is very active. Unless you get sent to a major city to help guard a platoon or something like that, you're pretty much gambling with your safety. Thank the damn rebels for this +40 year long conflict. Mad The bus that takes the draftees to their destinations is forbidden to stop while on the road for any reason whatsoever, as if the rebels manage to stop one of those, its very bad news for everyone on board...

On a more relaxed note, IAW you both on the voting for round two of the contest. Progenitus has the most potential to ruin anyone's day when he hits play on the other side of the table. Much like Inkwell Leviathan in limited. There's just no efficient way of dealing with them.

I'm droppng by to cast my vote for round one (Higure) and to excuse myself for a few days.

I'm in a really delicate situation at the moment, as the military in my country is currently drafting and stuff, and today (well, yesterday) I had an extremely close call. I was literatly, on the ****ING BUS before anyone payed attention to the fact I was brandishing a study certificate and a full-scholarship certificate for a prestigious school. Not that they cared, I just happened to ***** about it enough. I still can't believe I managed to get off the bus just before it drove us halfway across the country... I'm still shaking and all.

Thus, I need to do something quick to avoid getting drafted, and I'll be devoting a while to that, so sorry for any inactivity over the next few days. Hope the contest goes well...

Well guys, the criteria for the first round of the clan contest is up:

    Quote from rianalnn
    H'ok! I have not had much sleep, 'cos I was out all night at the disco, with 13 of my closest friends;

    Yeah, crazy night.

The first club we went to had some butterfinger dj making a fool of hisself, so we kind of spontaneously jumped ship en-masse, only, in the mad dash from Zhivago's over to Heaven (+ gods what a sketchy club that is, whatever possessed us to go there x_x) somebody seemed to have gotten lost; I'm looking at the pics I snapped + one of my friends isn't in any of the ones I took after we bolted, not even the group shot with the cabbie who drove us back to the west side just before sunrise.

    Oops.

Can you guess who it was?

Deadline is set to before-it's-Saturday, February 14th Alaska Standard Time. Good luck everyone!

I say we vote out Cloud Key or Jaya Ballard, as a key is usually something you keep in your pocket (ie: Won't show up in pics), and Jaya seems like the kind of gal to run off with a good looking guy at a club.;)

EDIT: Now that I think about it, if you see a ninja, he isn't a ninja, so Higure is another possibility.

@Auron: Thanks for the input! I'm glad you like the list. Zombies have been my first love in MtG since day one, and it has been my primary goal to develop a competitive list for a while.

I've been doing as much testing against most competitive decks in the format. Fae is a very rough match-up, as is anything running Vedalken Shackles. Post SB, Defense Grid helps against the permission and Disenchant goes for the shackles, but I'm not sure what to do against them. Frown Other than that, it's fared pretty well. Dredge is unbelieveably easy, Elves! is tough game one, though G2 is easier, and I'm confident I can protect the Rule of Laws with the discard. Same applies to TEPS and Swans, Swans being even easier thanks to Burrenton Forge-Tender in the board. I think I've got a decent chance, given the players and decks I expect to see at the PTQ.

I love your grixis decklist overall. It's disruptive, handles big beats, and has a load of interesting tricks that go unseen at first. I don't see the point in the noobsticks, however. I'd probably swap them out for other things, maybe a 4th Arena or Damnation and a random big dude or something.

@Beinghumanbeing: Thanks for the response! I favor Rule of Law over canonist due to the fact that Canonist just dies alot easier to everything. TEPS uses Electrolyze to kill her and Elves! can use Viridian Shamman to kill her, and the stray removal spell also ends her, so I'd rather have an enchantment. While the Jitte is absolutely insane, I find that it slows my tempo against the combo decks (it becomes another 4 drop, or a turn of dropping no threats) that are rampart in my area. That, and the fact that I've never been able to get a hold of any. Shocked

I've been testing both Path to Exile as much as I've been able to recently, and they've both exceeded my expectations. I knew PtE was going to be good, but to be able to completely rape AIR, Affinity, and most Zoo builds in extended is bonkers. It hoses the random decks as well, like Hulk Combo (RFG the hulk before it dies), Tooth n' Nail, Tron's creatures... the extra land, even in AIR's case, proved nigh insignificant most cases. If you're planning on taking any deck using white to an extended PTQ, get these babies quickly, they're worth the 4 bucks for sure.

@Clan Contest: As much as I'd like to make life annoying for the other clans, I'd rather win both contests. Hence, I agree with Evincar Auron: 1st pick: Nyxathid, 2nd Pick: One with Nothing.

@Pre-release stories: This pre-release was almost a complete trainwreck for us. See, it seems that there was a mix-up at the mailing company, so we got a ****load of conflux boosters and fat-packs, which were inteded for the release event, but we got no Shards of Alara boosters. The TO had to call another city and ask for some Shards boosters, and we managed to get our hands on two booster boxes. This caused some issues with a lot of the players, and we lost a few due to this. In the end, 51 or so players participated in a 1-Shards, 5-Conflux sealed pre-release. Judging went smoothly save for a single incident of suspected cheating. I sponsored a guy who wasn't going to play for 50% of his entry fee, and left the day with two Nyxathid, four Path to Exile (two of them foil XD), two Malfelgor, and 6 boosters in store credit. It was a pretty good weekend, if you ask me.

On another vein, I've almost completed my Bw Zombie build to take to an extended PTQ next month. I'm expecting a few Deathcloud/Rock builds, AIR, Fae, Elves!, affinity, and plenty of combo decks (Hulk, Swans, TEPS). I might see dredge, but I'm not too worried about that. What do you guys think of this build:

I was considering lowering the land count to 22 and adding a Stillmoon Cavalier MD, clearing up two SB slots for stuff like Stabilizer or Leyline of the Void to help balance Life from the Loam engines. Night of Souls' Betrayal rapes fae and elves, but I've been considering the unused Screams from Within to use instead. I've been able to pull off some interesting tricks by enchanting one of my creatures and then saccing the creature to Feeder or throwing a smother at it. Any suggestions?

I can't make it to any PTQs this season because I work most weekends and don't have a decent Extended deck. Slant

Here. It basically looks to be a rehashing of Blightning Aggro to incorporate Nyxathid, Tidehollow Sculler, and Raven's Crime. If 5CC becomes the best or second best deck, pretty much any deck running 8 copies of Thoughtseize will be playable, especially if its finisher costs only 1BB. Rolleyes

Thanks for the link. It certianlly seems interesting, and its somewhat similar to my Bw zombies idea. Having Sculler + thoughtseize in the same deck, along with powerful removal (PtE,), and ressilient creatures (Stillmoon Cavalier) makes for a fun and powerful deck.

EDIT: I've been thinking of adding Shattered Dreams as fun affinity SB tech, but so far the list has fared pretty well in the matchup with Matrix in the board. Should I try to find room for the dreams?

@Auron: Sure thing. This is the list I've been slinging at FNM to consistent T4 finishes:

The sideboard usually changes according to what I expect to meet, though the mainstay card is usually Damping Matrix. If I expect the slide players to show up, I throw in a few Stabilizers, and if I expect a lot of control, Defense Grids go in. Ocasionally, some guy with a very fast RG Land destruction deck shows up, so I throw in some Crucible of Worlds to make the match up easier. The above sideboard list is probably what I'd sling around in an unknown meta, making sure Derdge, Hulk, and Swans have a harder time against me (Leyline), stopping Jittes, Swords of both kinds, and Affinity (Matrix), the necessary Elves! and to a lesser degree, fae hate (Night), and your standard added disruption and creature kill.

Oh, and I run Unmake over smother in the list as my metagame isn't chock-full of cheap creatures (and not too many goyfs, thankfully), so I can handle the extra turn before throwing removal around. The fact that it deals with randomly big dudes also makes me favor it for my particular metagame. For a PTQ, I'd definetely throw in the Smothers.

@Duffman: It's very nice to take a break away from the game once it reaches a point you hate. That's why extended is my favorite format, I've got all the cards I need already (or they are easily obtainable) and its not a complete stalemate. I'm even planning on taking a rogue deck to the extended PTQ, either my homebrew MBC deck or (most likely) my Bw Zombie build.

@Auron: I also feel that way in college. There are two major public schools in my city, and most of the magic players go to the one I'm not in, so its hard to find playing groups outside the local store for me. I try to go weekly, but its proven rather hard.

You guys keep taliking about WBR deck with Nyxathid. Where can I find a link to it?

At the very least, I'm getting a few copies of Nyxathid for my casual mono-black discard deck.

Wow. It's been a while since I posted. Sorry for the abscence guys.

I hope things have been going well in the clan tournaments and in general for the clan in my abscence. College and a few IRL issues needed to be adressed, which hasn't left much time for MTG, neither online or in real life. Still, my belated congrats to Auron and Duffman for stepping up to the leading positions. It seems like you two have been doing an excellent job, keep it up!:D

A few comments on Conflux and Alara... I personally hate the idea of a three-color themed block, but I love the flavor of the set. Grixis makes me cackle with diabolical laughter, seeing as I'm a huge zombie fan and grixis is basically everything I could wish for. Death Baron is, quite simply, stupid good in any zombie deck.

Conflux has been a dissapointment for me in terms of black cards, though Nyxathid (hope I got that right) seems like a powerful finisher for a black-based discard deck, and the black scepter that forces discard isn't too shabby. I'm still hoping for some good zombies or control elements for black in the last few cards remaining to be spoiled.

That aside, I was wondering if anyone here was planning on attending any GP's or PTQ's this year. There's going to be an extended PTQ for Austin in my city later this year, and I'm pretty excited about playing in it (extended is my favorite format, and the only one I have a good deck in) rather than judging it. What about you guys? Anyone aiming for Honolulu?

  • posted a message on MBC - Discard
I've recently built a Mono-black discard deck, and it's fared decently enough in testing. Perhaps a little too discard heavy for my taste at times, but I don't want a clone of my MBC list, so I'm unsure of what to change.

The SB is pretty versatile, answering Dredge, Tron, Fae (these two to an extent), Affinity, some forms of counter control, and Elves! (though the MD game is pretty solid against them).

The Rack is an auto 4-of in any discard based deck, as it is your primary wincon. It's very hard for your opponent to get out of Rack-range, especially if you have a Hippy or a Lethemancer on the board eliminating any cards he might choose to keep. Funeral Charm is an interesting choice. It kills annoying mana-elves in the Elves! matchup, Bob, a first-turn FOD, multiple fae, and can still force a discard.

    Hello all.

It's been a while since I popped around, but college has been keeping me rather busy. Due to issues with the students at the beginning of the year, my semester was delayed to start recently, meaning I have to complete 6 months worth of work in 10 weeks. Yeah, it's been fun so far.

I can keep up with the once-a-month minimum for posting, so I'd like to remain a member if possible. =)

On magic related news... I'm in conflict with Alara. I hate the idea of tri-color decks being the minimum nowadays, and I hate the fact that building manabases alone is about to get absurdly expensive. I do, however, love some of the black cards in Shards. Fleshbag Marauder is the best removal card I've seen for my 1.X zombie decklist, and Death Baron keeps the love coming for my sweet undead. I like the WB Zombies list that's running around in the forums, but I don't remember where it is ATM.

I've decided to stray from my usual aggro decks in 1.X, and came up with a rather decent MBC list. I don't play much anymore (focused on judging, seeing as we've got a Kyoto PTQ shortly and I want to take my Level 1 exam), but it's been doing well at small extended tournaments in my area. Take a look:
