Quote from Incidneous4 »Hello all, seeking some advice on what to pick up for my first Modern deck. I am thinking of buying in to one of these decks: Affinity, Merfolk, Burn or Abzan Company.
Here's some of my thinking on each of these decks, and would appreciate any corrections or advice on any of what I've said.
Affinity - Looks to be a highly competitive deck and I enjoy the idea of it taking a long time to master it. I enjoy playing with lots of synergistic cards. However, am concerned that it will often have a big target on its head and will be at the receiving end of a lot of hate. Am also worried that there could be potential bans in the future? I know this was being discussed earlier in the year.
Merfolk - This deck appeals to me on a more emotional level. I enjoy the look of the play style and how the deck runs together. Am worried about having a couple of really bad matchups with this deck though, as Affinity and Infect make up a large portion of my meta.
Burn - Looks like an easier way to jump in to the format, although am concerned that the deck will become boring after becoming familiar with it and it's matchups.
Abzan Company - Obviously on the more expensive side but plays some of my favourite colours and types of spells. Not really familiar with playing combo but would be an exciting new challenge and feels like the sort of deck that would be interesting to play for a long time.
I am definitely a fan of proactive play styles, but would like a deck that will last a good long while and be fun to play for years to come. The transferability of cards is somewhat of a concern, as having the options to port cards in to other decks/formats would be good, but not vital.
Quote from Ayiluss »I think you could try something like Mardu control/midrange or Grixis control. It seems that you like interaction and both decks are interactive with control/midrange style of play. I don't know if you want deck now or are willing to spend longer time on building it and buy more pieces when you get more money-if that's the case I would recommend you Jund which is the best deck of that kind unless you want to go for even more reactive plan and might want to try Jeskai Nahiri control.
