A New and Exciting Beginning

The End of an Era

I want to post this very soon. That way, we could keep the players preoccupied and interested while we sort out the rest of the details of the game.

The Livian Ferry is a boat filled with beginning trainers. The Livian Ferry makes a stop in most other regions and brings trainers to Livian City. Most of the trainers are beginning trainers on their ways to start their career with Pokemon in Risin. The ferry is quite large, almost like a cruise ship. There are places to eat, a souvenir store, a small pool, and other places to relax. Each ferry member has a room to rest in as well. The boat is quite packed with people, and has many open areas perfectly fit for pokemon battle.

    Upcomming Events:
Small Tournament coming up soon! Any interested trainers can enter with one pokemon of their choosing. The tournament will be single elimination with small prizes for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place, plus a small consolation prize for all participants.

Sorry. I was going to have the map finished tonight, but I saw that Ti'rin (my old arch rival, pretty much) just was fired from MTG:RPG. That lead to a couple PMs from me and ended up taking a few more hours than I wanted. Sorry but it is a big deal. I feel so vindicated!

I really want to say somethings about Ti'rin here. I think it was well known that he and I never got along. However, I have learned my lesson from last time (You are the best AoK) and I will choose to remain mostly silent. I just have to say two breif things:

    1. For all those who did not know, this is not the first time he broke the rules of this game in my opinion. He did something very, very questionable before. I will not elaborate.

    2.I told you so.

Also, I have to say when he yelled at me for assuming that he was Devlin, I felt so bad. I asked Fenris first to see if he knew anything about it. Obviously a bad idea, as Ti'rin was told and confronted me about it as if by snooping like that and not directly confronting him, I had done him the greatest offense ever. I felt so, so, so sorry that I had done this and wronged him this way, and I am going to once again stop talking before I get out of hand. If anyone would like to voulenteer to be the recipient of a PM rant when I (and it is inevitable) get more angry about this, I might enjoy it. You might learn some fun stories too.

Finally, I do not really want to come back as a WPL. I am happy helping out in the World of Pokemon (do come play once we get it started....again) and last time I tried to balance two WPLships, it was too much work and it cost me both of them. However, if the WPLs want advice or help from another experienced MTG:RPG WPL, you may contact me. It seems like you have enough voulenteers, but I just wanted to put that out there. Thanks.

Look. I have absolutely no problem doing stuff differently this time. But, that doesn't mean I am not going to continually reference old games. If an old game did something right, I am not sure why we can't do it as well. Especially if we are need to be quick, it might be wise to follow the leads of some of the other games. It might not appear this way, but I have listened to every single suggestion you or Daftmouse has given to me with a completely open mind. I am in no way convinced that Makorandy's version, or my version, were perfect, and I am willing to do things differently when appropriate. You just have to convince me that it is better than the current way. However, following the canon is very low on my list of priorities.

Here is one of the biggest dilemmas of the RP: Rewards. Lets say a trainer with 6 gym badges and a full team of powerful pokemon chooses to take a break from gym battles to help out the local team of Pokemon Rangers. He does it, and, as with any good quest, the trainer should find some sort of reward at the end. What do you give him? My first thought is a rare pokemon, but if that trainer already has 6 pokemon that he is devoted to, I doubt he would switch one of them out for a random reward pokemon. The next thought is money, which works, but after a point, players will get enough money that it is meaningless, plus it is a boring reward. TMs are the perfect answer to this dilemma. As I said, if I were in this player's position, I would be happy to recieve some random TMs (for example: Bubblebeam, Slash, Faint Attack, Hypnosis, and Screech). They could teach Hypnosis to their Alakazam, Slash to their Arcanine, Bubblebeam to their Dewgong, and gave Screech and Faint Attack for later. Their team just got a decent power boost, and I think the next time that player has a battle, they would probably enjoy it more due to their new moves.

We do not need to make a giant list of what Pokemon could learn what. All we have to do is when someone asks us: Can my Alazazam learn Hypnosis? We will answer Yes or No, maybe after some discussion. If they can reasonably justify it using RPing, I would be very inclined to let them learn the move. Also, with pre existing TMs, if someone could justify it, I'd be fine with it. For example, FL would not let my Absol learn dig because in the game, it can't learn dig. However, if you look at Absol, it is a dog(I think) and it makes very much sense to me that it would be able to dig a hole. If Growlithe can learn dig, why can't Absol. Their builds are quite similar. With who can learn what, my rule would be a pokemon can learn it only if the player can reasonable justify it using RPing, but we have veto power (no Bubblebeaming Arcanines). Also, if it is a little Farfetched, that is fine to a point because the point of a TM is that it helps teach the move to the pokemon. If a TM can teach a Rattata Thunderbolt, they must be pretty powerful devices.

Also, with such a large variety of TMs, the game would become much more unexpected. Pokemon battles would become less predictable because you never know what a Pokemon could know. And, they would be able to personalize their teams with random fun tms they found along their travels. The list of TMs you suggest has some holes. For example, there are not to many weak TM moves. We have Water Gun and Bullet Seed, but if we want to give a Tm to a starting trainer, why can't it be something else? Why Water Gun but not Ember? And as we continue through the game...Why Fissure and not Sheer Cold? Why Swift and Shock Wave, but no Faint Attack or Magical Leaf? Why Rock Polish but no Agility? Why Overheat but no Draco Meteor? Why Fire Punch but no Fire Fang? Why Mud Slap but not Mud Shot? Need I go on? I see no reason to limit ourselves to the existing TMs instead of opening up a whole new world of possibilities and potential.

I wanted to bring this up, so I am giving it its own topic for discussion.

First, in my version of the game, one could get a TM of any move (this never came up, though). Players were not limited to the 50 (or should I say 92) TMs. I loved this. That way, TMs for basic moves could be found on the ground and add some spice to someone's team. Someone could find a TM for Poison Sting of Bubble or Powder Snow, which would add a whole new level of depth to their team. This does raise the question: who can learn what TM? I think, if it makes sense, and if the person can RP it well, the pokemon can learn the TM. Sure, they might alter the move a bit for it to fit, but if it encourages them to RP, why not? Also, if someone very passionatly want to teach their Raichu Zap Cannon, they might be able to find a TM for it. TMs make great rewards that I think players would be happy to see. I think, after a decent sized quest, I would be happy to be rewarded with Bubblebeam, Slash, Faint Attack, Hypnosis, and Screech. Making TMs for all moves helps in all stages of the game, in my opinion. (Maybe there could be very few exceptions for Spacial Rend, Roar of Time and Heart Swap)

Hm's however raise a much harder question. Since we are not limiting pokemon to 4 moves (no version of the game has done this since Nai's, and I think people like it, so I am assuming we will keep this) the downside of HMs are gone. I think more than 50% of pokemon can learn Rock Smash, so when someone got that HM, they would simply teach Rock Smash to their entire team and if everyone had a team full of Pokemon with Rock Smash, each team would lose some originality, which I think is bad. I have a couple possible solutions to this. I'm fine with any of them:
-We do not allow players to carry an HM. They can use an HM if someone else lets them, but they will probably never get one
-Simply make HMs into TMs. I think the only reason HMs are infinite in the game is so an idiot trainer doesn't Fly to Cinnabar Island, trade away all his pokemon with Surf and Fly, and be royalled ****ed. If someone needs a second Cut TM, they have to find another one. (My favorite solution)
-Add a factor of RPing into HMs (and TMs-see next point). Once you use a TM/HM, they do not learn the move instantly. It takes a good deal of training to master it, so a trainer can't just instantly teach it to a pokemon. That might prevent abuse of HMs.

A very important question: What is a TM? How do you use it? How does it magically make a pokemon learn a move? My solution: A TM is a very small magic stone. Touching a Pokemon with that stone transfers the stone's power into the pokemon, which gives them the power to do the move. However, it takes practice to master it. I am open to other interpretations.

OK, I figured it out. You have to be a ranger to get this item. You do not have to start as a Ranger to get this item. If you are a trainer who later decides to become a Ranger, or starts doing a lot of ranger missions, they can get one of these. Sorry if this was implied, I got confused.

Also, if a ranger manages to collect 8 badges, they should be able to try to become league champion. Why not?

Re Biased survey: I do not deny that. I have said at least once to you both that I wanted you to look through the questions, edit parts that seem unfair, so that we could compromise on the questions and post a more un-biased survey to get players' opinions.
I have nothing against you, VJ, you seem like a fine dude.
Thanks a lot for that. I have nothing against either of you also.
So, I guess I'm sort of at a loss on what to do
Do what you think is right for the game. That is what I always do.

I know this isn't Makorandy' RP anymore, but as an experienced member of this game, I think it was a good incarnation, so I think we should keep the good aspects of it.

    For reference, my questions:

Feel free to answer through PM if you would prefer and if you explian your reasoning, it would help out even more. Also, feel free to write your own answer and not choose one of mine if you are indifferent.

    1. Did you like the way Makorandy was running the game? If you liked or disliked something strongly that isn't touched upon later in this survey, please include it here.
    a) Yes
    b) No. If no, why?

    2. Did you like Makorandy's traveling system and why?
    a) Yes
    b) No

    3. Were you upset that Makorandy limited the starting pokemon to not include rare pokemon?
    a) Yes. I want my rare pokemon.
    b) Yes, but I understand that it is right for the game.
    c) No. It made sense.

    4. Did you like Makorandy's job system?
    a) Yes.
    b) No, by choosing a job I felt limited to that job. (For example, you felt that if you chose trainer, you could never do a contest)
    c) No (for another reason)

    5. When you voted for the game to be reset....
    a) You thought that the game would stay the same but everyone would start over to restore plot points
    b) You thought that the entire way the game was run would be changed.

    6. Which of the following is more important to you?
    a) Following the example set by the anime and the video games
    b) Making the game better even if it means steering away from the canon

    7. Should it be...
    a) Easy to be a gym leader.
    b) Hard to be a gym leader.

    8. After you gather 8 gym badges, I believe the next course of action should be
    a) Battling the Elite Four like in the games
    b) Battling the Pokemon League like in the anime (One giant tourney)
    c) Pokemon League, then Elite 4
    d) Elite 4, then Pokemon League
    e) Becoming a Gym Leader
    f) Other

    9. (Which I would like to add) Would you rather
    a) Start the game right now, even though we may change some things and it might be awkward
    b) Wait until we perfect the game and then start it

    10. How do you feel about making up Pokemon for this game?
    a) Sure. Anyone should be able to make up a Pokemon for this game.
    b) Sure, but only WPLs should be able to make up Pokemon.
    c) Sure, but only legendary Pokemon should be made up.
    d) I am strongly against making up Pokemon for this game.

Makorandy sent me a PM on 7-22-09 saying I could be a WPL in this game. I was patiently waiting for him to give me some information so I could start but he never did. That was before he left. When he left and you took over, I assumed you didn't want me to continue being a WPL until I saw that I had been listed as one. I have the PM to prove it, but since PMs, by name, are meant o be private, I personally do not like sharing them unless it is absolutely nessecary.

That first comment was targetted at Froxy. Even if you both agree with it, you really should run it by me first or else my presence here is pointless. Let me give my opinion, and consider my reasoning with an open mind. You might decide to edit your ruling a little bit. I will always give my opinion if I think it is for the best of the game, even if it hinders it's progress a little bit.

Um, that rule on unlearned rules makes very little sense to me. Why is there a 30% chance that my Chimchar faints if it tries to Tackle something? That makes absolutely no sense. The original purpose of unlearned moves is to add some creativity and depth into the game. At the start of the game, pokemon only know 1-2 moves, and battles that are Tackle-Scratch-Tackle-Scratch-Tackle-Scratch-Tackle-Win are very, very, very boring. Unlearned moves are put into existance so that battles can be made more interesting by allowing pokemon to do things that aren't technically moves. However, since they are unlearned, they are much less powerful. For example, a starting Chimchar could probably tackle something, bite something, or maybe shoot some embers without fainting or exhausting itself, because those are things that make sense for it to do. However, since it never practiced it, it would be as strong as an actual Bite, Tackle, or Ember attack. Your rule actually stifles creatvity in the game. It tells players that if they do something that isn't a move, there is a 30% chance they will lose because of it. If I was a player and that rule was around, I woudln't use anything except my moves. That is not right. We are supposed to be accepting and maybe even rewarding creativity, not removing it and letting the people who stick to simply using their moves and not RPing well win by default.

You system works well for unlearned Fire Blasts, Hydro Pumps, and Hyper Beams, but what if my Grimer wanted to use an unlearned Acid Armor. So what if the attack is sucessful, it still would faint and it'd be meaningless. And, although no one should ever do it, what about an unlearned Splash? Why should that cause you to faint?

In a game I am running, I don't want people to only be creative "once in a while," I want them to be creative all the time. It makes it more fun
However, it'd only be available to people who are Pokemon Rangers, like, literally. If a trainer volunteers on a mission, they don't get one. It's part of the Ranger's equipment.
Froxy, you expressed a fear earlier about jobs limiting players: that a trainer couldn't do contests or a breeder couldn't go on Ranger missions. I think as long as we DON'T have special things that we give ONLY to Rangers, there is nothing to fear. Because if this is actually going to happen, certain jobs WILL limit certain players.

I'm not going to comment on everything tonight since I'm out of town, and I am trying to finalize my version of the map (which includes everything you want on it, I am just filling out the rest)

    Just a few things things.

    1. I know we settled one of our major disputes and I think both sides are happy, but I still think we should do the survey. I think it is important to get player opinions and take them under consideration.

    2. You asked me nicely to keep our drama out of the public. However, you just announced a new rule without running it by me AGAIN. Due to this, I am going to argue against it in the public and not here.

    3.
I swear to god if you argue that I will get you removed
We are equals here. You have no extra power over me. I do not think this is a valid threat and I am not afraid of it. What if I had a logical piece of counterargument? So, if you use this threat one more time, I will have you removed as a WPL.

Wow look. A good compromise. d1000 is also fine by me. I'm going to wait for Froxy to chip in on it though.
I only did that because under his system it was what I was supposed to do for their die roll. Either way the Torkoal that permenantly burned a player and Beedrill swarm are also not something a new trainer should have to fight unless they do something stupid or are highly unlucky, not 10% of the time.
I agree. The beedrill swarm was meant to deter people from the Route until it was cleared. I think the Torkoal was different than the Swampert because the Torkoal lead to an event (saving it with a ranger) but the Swampert was a bit too much because it was just a wild pokemon.

I think the result of the roll should vary by route so players can't predict the results of their rolls

If by flow better you mean slows it down to an absolute crawl and forces people to deal with too many Pokemon or Pokemon of too high of a level.
First, this is a forum RPG, so there is nothing we can do to prevent this from being an absolute crawl. 3 is not too many pokemon. And as for pokemon of too high of a level, well you don't need to put Swamperts on Route 1.
This may be true but I am only making it so you can use basic routes faster, there still will be caves, sea routes and forests that will require more rolls.
    That's good.
So does entering tournaments, going on sidequests with people you meet in a new city and other things that are far more involved than roll a die.
True, but you cannot deny that it prepares them as well.
Ash gets lost constantly and in the games you can try to avoid trainers and tall grass.
I am currently playing through Platinum for the first time on my vacation. Next time I get to a Route, I am going to try my best to avoid everything. I bet I still fight at least three wild pokemon. I will be sure to give you the play by play, though.
You still can have unexpected event if a player decides to stay on a route or by having them meet people in towns.
Yes but most players are focused on their goals. Let me reword that to say "It forces players to have unexpected events happen to them..."
    True
So you admit that your only logical reasoning was that you both wanted it, and since you are the majority, you get whatever you want.
Several of your questions were weighted in your favour. Also you deleted my post so it is fair.
I was trying not to weight them, but I knew they would be weighted a little bit. That is why I am giving you an option right now to change the questions before I repost them.
You already are trying to bring the discussion into the public so I see no difference
I brought no discussion. All I did was ask some questions to poll people's opinion. If someone contradicts me, I am not going to argue with them and create a discussion.
at least this way we can give te players the chance to see our superior system.
You are right. Your system might be superior, but seeing that we have already restarted this game numerous times, I would rather not risk it. We already have a system that works and I say if it ain't broke, don't fix it.

Edit: Here is my attempt at making a travelling system that works.
    1. A player, traveling through a normal Route must roll 3 d100s in order to get to the next location.
    2. A player, riding on a bicycle, travelling through a normal Route only has to roll 2 dice to get to the next location.
    3. A player may choose to sprint through a Route. Sprinting through the Route (on foot or on bicicle) reduces the amount of necessary dice rolls by one. They can also roll all their dice at the same time. This is because, if they are sprinting, some (but not all) wild pokemon will not pursue them, some trainers will not get in their way to challenge them, and they will whiz past items on the ground. Sprinting through a rest should also tire out the character and any pokemon that are travelling outside of their pokeball.
    4. On Sea Routes, the ammount of rolls will depend on the pokemon you are surfing on and the length of the Route.
    5. If you teach a pokemon, through and HM, to Fly, you can fly to any location. However, depending upon the size of your pokemon and the length of travel, you must land and rest shortly (1 dice roll) in a certain number of routes along the way.
    6. In caves and forest, the amount of rolls can vary depending on whether or not the player gets lost and the length of the cave/forest

So, I kept the traveling system, but I gave people the ability to sprint through routes to get from A to B faster.

Just so everyone knows, I am leaving town from now until next Sunday (The 6th, I believe). My posting should not change. I will be doing stuff during the day, but I should be able to post and update before I go to bed each night. I will have internet. But, If I do drop off the face of this site for a week, this is why. Honestly, you left me with no other choice. I am going to use the traveling system as my example. I have provided many logical reasons why it should be kept as the way it was in Makorandy's game. After a quick scan through these threads, I cannot find one logical reason you have given to defend it. If have said that

-It makes the game flow better
-It makes arriving at a city more satisfying
-It prepares them more well for upcoming challenges
    -It matches the canon well
-It allows unexpected events to happens, which can be fun and suprising and help character development

    You have said that
    -You have a 66.6% majority

Now, since you have refused to listen to my reasoning or defend yourself, I sent it to the players. I don't think you understand. If the players were to side with you, there would be nothing I can do. No arguements of mine can defeat the player's support. Since you don't seem to have any better defense, player support might be a good one. Also, removing the message proves to me that you are scared that the players wont agree with you. In that case, you admit that you might be making a desicion that goes directly against the interest of the players.

Also, removing me as a WPL would do you nothing. Removing my vote would be pretty pointless because you guys will obviously just outvote me on everything. All it will do is force me to bring the discussion to the public. Also, if you removed a fellow WPL simply because he does not agree with you, that would make you appear cowardly and unwilling to listen to change to the players. I also do not know if an admin would remove me simply for not agreeing with you.

The one thing that I think I wronged you with was that I did not give you chance to look over the questions before I posted them. Feel free to do that now.

    Thank you

    -Videojuegos

EDIT: Also, it is only a survey. It won't bring any drama. I will do my best to contain the drama here. (unless you remove me as a WPL)
