What will happen to club Flamingo when the site closes?
Could we make Club Flamingo it’s own website?
well, somebody could make a new Club Flamingo thread on the new site. Wink

To be clear I'm referring to myself there.

I wasn't expecting to have to make a new post so soon after the last one, but I guess my hand was forced.

When the time comes and the new site is up I'll make a new Club Flamingo there, as well as providing one final retrospective post here. End of an era indeed, but just like last time it'll rise again.

This month was the eight year anniversary of this thread. Eight years! It's honestly incredible to me that this thread has kept chugging along for this long.

While I may have left Club Flamingo, Club Flamingo hasn't left me. This thread, and what came out of it, continues to have influence on my life. Just ask my friends, who give me flamingo-themed gifts every year for Christmas. Or look at my household's semi-regular celebrations of "Flamingo Time," an impromptu holiday based on the time shown on a broken flamingo clock I have hanging above the entrance to my kitchen. This strange corner of the internet was a huge part of my life back in the day, and it makes me happy to see that it's still going in some form eight years later. Maybe if it's still around two years from now we can do something special for the ten year anniversary.

With all of that said, here's another Statistics update:

Club Flamingo Statistics Update — November 2018

Thread Rating: ☆☆☆☆☆. Thread ratings don't exist anymore, but I'm grandfathering this rating in. You are all worth five stars to me.

Thread Size: Unsurprisingly, we're still #1 with 61,261 posts. As of the last update three years ago we had 59,150 posts. That's only 2,111 posts over three years (as compared to the 17,600 reported in the two year period covered by the last statistics post), but from what I understand about overall forum traffic this isn't that surprising to me. Still, the glory days of nonstop spam appear to have ended.

Thread Views: First, with 2,324,835 views! Three years ago we were at 2,008,742 views. Crazy. Is anybody even looking at any other threads? You know, if everybody who looked at the thread posted we might have better stats for next time.

Posts per Day Lifetime: 20.61. This is a significant drop from the 34.19 we had three years ago. The thread has now been alive for 2,972 days, which I may remind you again is eight years.

Posts per Day since last update: 1.69. Last time I checked this the average was 24.42. This represents 2,111 posts over 1,243 days. If you scroll back through past statistics updates you'll see our highest-ever PPD rate was 99.35 over a single month period. So... it's been higher.

Thanks Count: 66. Maybe people have forgotten about this feature? Go thank the OP if you haven't, if only so that in 2025 when I come back here I'll get to say we kept that going up.

Top Ten Most Prolific Posters, Lifetime:
    Chemtrails – 3496 (+62)
    Megiddo – 3276 (+45)
    Cythare – 2848 (+11)
    admirableadmiral – 2581 (+66)
    AsianInvasion – 2572 (-)
    void_nothing – 1706 (+133)
    Oculus – 1675 (+2)
    avatarz – 1476 (+14)
    Winterspring – 1409 (+67)
    MDenham – 1355 (-)

No changes to the top 10 (other than some change in position)... and I'm not sure whether there ever really will be. void_nothing is has made the biggest gains lately but still has a long way to go to crack the top 5.

    Why would they lock this?

All good things have their time

I don't mean to turn this into a discussion thread but....Why did this thread suddenly die out after 50,000 plus posts? Sorry if the reason behind this is common knowledge, I have never been a regular poster in this thread. I am just a curious observer. Smile

We took a pretty big hit to both numbers and momentum with the switch to Curse.
This thread died due to a combination of factors, largely the quoted.

Switch to Curse led to a few problems. The site was the first rollout of custom forum software for Curse, so we were in effect beta testing. We also asked for many of our custom vBulletin features to be replicated (see: public polls, etc.) and while we got many, I'm sure we sacrificed overall usability for this. Devs can only work on so many things at a time.

The mobile site in particular was particularly unruly. We finally got a mobile view but it was not really super great and had a lot of usability issues. Bad mobile ads today keep me from using the site on my phone.

One more thing that often goes unmentioned is that Curse is categorized by many work filters as a gaming site, while the old vBulletin site was not. So many people were no longer able to browse at the office.

Those three things combined led to a massive reduction in traffic for the site overall. Combine that with the unrelated rise of Reddit and Twitter as places for serious discussion about MTG and you get a losing formula. Old users weren't sticking around because things were bad, and potential new users just went to Reddit.

On a more personal note, a lot of this thread was driven by me and the Flamingo guys. Obviously not totally, but this thread was our old stomping ground before we started to pick people up and move to different chat media like IRC or whatever. As we grew older and our life circumstances changed we sort of grew out of it as well. I can only speak for myself, but this was where I dumped my time and energy when I was in college. After graduating I started to focus that energy elsewhere and lost interest in CCC on the whole. Without that, plus the fact that the Flamingo guys moved elsewhere, I lost reasons to visit.

It's a shame in some ways. I actually browse the weekly "best of" Reddit custom cards every week, but beyond that I don't really use this as a creative outlet anymore. I'm working full time and I have other hobbies now.

So, fond memories for me. It would be fun to start it up again but I just don't engage with this site often enough to check in.

We are still the biggest thread in this subforum by over 10k posts. It was a blast, but for me at least it's only memories now.
