Amazing post! Thanks for all the info.
I would like to request adding in a "skeleton build" for a commander deck as a good base for newer players.
(I.E. X land, X removal, X mana rocks, and so on.)
Also, Shahrazad is misspelled in your post.

Jun 26, 2017Hey Forums! How you doin?Posted in: Commander (EDH)
Had an interesting idea for a list. We all know that, before a game even begins, some players already have targets on their head for the commander they are playing. We also know that those whom arn't seen as threats early, tend to get ignored until later in the game. Knowing this, we should make a list of commanders that are similar to others, yet have a lot less threat to them, so that we won't be in the crosshairs.
I'll start us off...
While nothing to completely ignore, Surrak draws less attention than Animar does.
- Instead of Animar, Soul of Elements, as a creature aggro strat, use Surrak Dragonclaw.
- For five color tribal, any Sliver commander will get you instant hate, so instead use General Tazri with Ally tribal.
- If you're going for Azorius control, rather than using Grand Arbiter Augustin IV, play Gwafa Hazid, Profiteer.
Instead of punishing the whole table (making no friends) just lockdown certain threats, for which others will be grateful for.
Do you have any more "timid" substitutes in mind?
Jun 22, 2017I haven't actually played many commander games, but the few I have I haven't enjoyed fully either, and that was probably due to my lack of knowing how to play commander correctly.Posted in: Commander (EDH)
Mayael was my first commander deck I built and played. Even with ramp, to get her engine going took way too long to get out.
I made the deck focus around fatties entering the battlefield ( Cards like, Soul of the Harvest, Paleoloth, Warstorm Surge, and Where Ancients Tread.) I seemed to be a second thought to the whole table. I'd spend a turn playing an enchantment or spinning the Mayael wheel once, then someone would do a board wipe or simple spot removal, and I would be back to square 1.
I also tried to make a simple mono-blue, big sea creatures, deck, but it was awful to even test play. However, it was surely flavorful! (If only we could get a better leviathan/kraken/octopus tutor than Grozoth...)
Maybe if we can get a better Simic commander, we can make this deck work with Kiora's added in. Kiora, Master of the Depths Kiora, the Crashing Wave
Izzet is my favorite color combo, but I know it's difficult to make a long-grindy Izzet colored deck that would work in Commander (and doesn't go straight combo-win). Best bet is to add in a color so you can still play your favorite red/blue spells, but have some kind of stability.
In short, my advice is: don't bet on expensive combos, flavor-only decks are only that, and to make decks more fair to play over broken.

Oooo! This looks interesting, thank you for sharing! I shall look into it in the meantime~
EDIT: Apparently the mainly use cockatrice. Not sure if I'm down with that.
Jun 17, 2017Not sure whether to post this here or the MTGO section, so appologies if this is the incorrect one.Posted in: Commander (EDH)
Just wanted to know if anyone here plays Commander/EDH on Magic: the Gathering Online? Is there a big population of Commander players on MTGO? Is it still fun to play even though you lack the face-to-face interactions?
I'm asking because I have no one near me (nor in a local LGS) whom plays commander, leaving my only option to be MTGO.
If anyone is considering possibly playing commander on MTGO, connecting via Discord (or whatever) could make the experience more enjoyable.
Let me know what you think! I'm kinda lonely here in no-commander-land...
