Played a heads up match to qualify for a local league final today (everyone must be playing standard).
Played against Abzan Which I thought was a good match up.
Game 1: Win easy. New Throne of god seemed pretty good. Although could just be a win more.
Side: + Cameleon + Skite + Champion + selfless spirit - 2x Nettle - Druid - Rec sage.
Game 2: Mulligan to a risky 6. Push's my dork and I fail to find a 3rd land or dork.
Game 3: Mulligan to an OK 5.
Get beaten by push 's and paths and lingering souls.
Just a question, I'm playing abzan with 4 fetches. People have suggested this is not very consistent. Do they mean because you thin your lands by fetching or because you play only 6-8 white sources?
Just wanted some tips on playing after we board. Last week I was playing against UR Storm and had won game 2 by hard casting E of rhetoric.
However in game 3 I was unsure how hard I needed to mulligan on the draw. I kept a hand where I was hoping to go for the quick kill but they got there first.
Anyway, my question is how hard do we mulligan against these fast decks? And what do I need to keep at a minimum. It feels like I need the bullet in hand. I didnt feel like chord was fast enough.
Hey guys. I'm going to be streaming different versions of Elves on MTGO going forward starting tonight at 7pm Eastern at https://www.twitch.tv/baad007 and would love input on builds you guys wanna see played. Main goal is to figure out which build I end up playing in Roanoke for the SCG Invitational in June but would love to try out some things.
Is it possible to watch the replays? Not sure I will be able to watch it live.
I would personally ally be interested I'm GB and Abzan builds.
I haven't tested it but it feels like it might slow us down. Play it for 2mc then wait to next turn and pay 1mc plus a creature (1mc or a token), then having to cast the creature you searched for. This costs at least 4 to 7.
The beauty of chord is that it's an instant and the creature goes on the field.
Not sure if this is the right thread, but since the changes to gpt's and new nationals and everything being standard, what will be the most competitive Modern events in NSW/Australia? Only thing I can see will be a GP each year, but is that guaranteed?
Hi guys, I would appreciate some help with tuning my abzan elf deck (hopefully playing it tonight.) Below is the list I played a couple of weeks ago (3-0-1)
I do not own any cavern of souls or gilt-leaf palace. I would prefer to play GB but I figured that since I would already need to run fetches, I may as well play abzan
What are peoples thoughts on the number of basic forests I have? I feel like I should cut 1-2 razorverge for more basic forests.
I play at the same store that Syreal recently played in a Thusday win-a-box tournament at
Thanks for your help guys! I really appreciate it
I would probably cut some of the fetches or a couple of blooming marshs if you wanted more forests. One problem I could see would be drawing too many fetches with nothing to fetch. I'm sure there must be something written on this. For info, I have been playing a list with 4 fetches 4-5 forests and a tomb and garden Shockland. I think your mana Base can be split evenly without path or thoughtseize
My guess is that kitchen finks is probably better than essence warden as you can use it to chump buying you a turn or two as it replaces itself. In saying that if I was playing against goblins/Merfolk I think essence warden would be/is very good.
You could replace a abrupt decay with Fracturing gust or 2 depending on the meta. Abrupt decay is probably more versatile though.
Only other sideboard card I could think of would be Aven mind censor but I think your board is fine as is against an unknown meta.
I think path is defiantly the better card out of the lot. Being able to exile the majority of creatures is very valuable. I would lean towards abrupt decay if I was playing in a enchantment/artifact heavy meta.
If you had the choice between 2x cavern of souls or 1 Horizon canopy which purchase would you make. I am switching between GB and Abzan if that makes much difference.
I am leaning towards the GB build. Mostly because I enjoy shaman of the pack. From what I see the main deck hasn't changed much at all other then the addition of Blooming Marsh. I am lost on what to really side board. I am not sure how the meta is in my area any longer. I was looking at @Syreal94's list that was posted a few pages back and it looks pretty solid. From not playing for so long what is Nissa for in the board? I also assume you are siding in Lead the Stampede in during matches where we need more attrition over single targets. I also see there isn't much graveyard hate in a lot of list? or single target removal for decks like Eldrazi or infect? Do we not need it anymore in this build? Sideboarding will probably be my weakest link from not being familiar with the matches as I use to.
Lead as you've said before, comes in where attrition is valued more than speed. Nissa, Vital Force is a relatively new (but overperforming) card that I stole from VIPOwl. Card comes in the attrition matchups, and the matchups where they can't deal with walkers too well (DnT,8 rack,Bant Eldrazi etc etc). We crush Bant Eldrazi and Eldrazi Tron is likely in our favour also (***but I need more data to make this assertion***, just going off feel). Infect has basically died as a deck, at least all the pilots on it in Sydney sold out straight away.
I'm of the opinion Graveyard hate is not relevant. We get crushed by every graveyard deck, and it doesn't get any better post board. The amount of cards we'd need to commit to make the matchups salvagable are better committed to other matchups.
I played Eldrazi Tron the other might and got crushed 0-2. They made tron on turn 3 twice and were able to use all is dust on turn 3 in the first where I had lethal next turn.
It seems like a tough match up with all is dust in the main. It's probably a race.
Random question. I have played live with Elves twice now and both times I have got a few weird comments like "there is always someone who plays elves". Is there any history to Elves that people don't like?
Hey been following this thread for a few weeks now, thought I would post a quick tournament report with my first run with gb elves. Ended 2-2, Unfortunately 1 of those wins was against the bye. Playing very similar list to Syreal.
Match 1 : Budget infect - lose 1-2.
Kept a bad hand in first game, lose on their turn 3 or 4.
Win second game with spellskite out moving the target of his pump spells.
Lose race in game 3.
No melira hurt.
Match 2: Rb enchantment brew.lose 0-2
game 1 get ensnaring bridged. Couldn't draw a shaman to push through damage.
game 2 : Pretty close, couldn't draw any anchanment hate after getting inquisition ed a few times.
Match 3: food and beer.
Match 4: Red black goblins.Win 2-0.
Unfair match once I sided essence warden.
I did have 1 questions though. How bad of a hand should we keep when mulling? Still trying for 3 mana on turn 2 for example?
Congratulations.
I'm thinking if playing a similar list, what was your broad sideboard plan in each match?
Also any poor performers in the side or over performers that are must haves?

Not sure about the vizier version, seems like it could be inconsistent. I think you have to drop Shaman which I find consistently winning me games.

I wasn't sure if they were having a dig or not.
