I would also like to point out that Ethan Weber finished 28th with Bogles as well... he is a player from my local meta who I've discussed the deck with many times...
Glad I got to see this in person.. I went 3-3 drop with virtually the same build.. had a blast though.. a lot of Bogles in the room.. atleast 10 decks day 1
1) I prefer Seal.. I don't like to hold up mana when I play to be responsive. I like to apply pressure and playing out a seal allows me to just keep deploying the threats from my hand.. If dissenters hit enchantment it would prob be my choice for the cycling..
2)I tend to only use my Dryad arbor to play around sac effects and as an emergency chump blocker.. if I'm loading up on the Arbor it's cause I had to from either a mull to oblivion or recover after a late game board wipe.. but I will admit I'm a little to various with it's usage..
3) no.. leylines or bust...
4) I wouldn't cut land... I would up the fetch count to provide more thinning prob.. the best way to compensate is keen sense.. but I'm not a huge fan.. Canopies are worth the eventual investment..
5) some interesting spice I've seen is Intervention Pact or Triclopean Sight.. I used to hose people by open the armory'ing for detainment spell back when spellskite was around.. that was fun...
Ha. I'm happy to hear someone else is foiled up! I'm foiled as well but rarely bring it anywhere.. usually just puts a giant bullseye on you at smaller tourneys. Perfect for a GP though! Are you going to Hartford this spring as well or just Toronto?
I know what you mean.. I rarely get to play locally and if I do i get hated out hard.. I think Bogles is a great large event deck and I rode it last year to my only day 2 ever at an SCG.. I won't be in Hartford.. a little out of my range (live across the border from detroit). Will for sure be at both Toronto s and Detroit and hopefully Richmond so i can play my beloved Enchantress in some legacy... I'm actually thinking Bogles will line up nicely for the team trios.. I haven't had luck with it in unified as Infect and Ad Naus always seem to be super present..
Hello all! I'm new here, been following the thread a bit for some months. I'm an old casual player who've returned to play MtG like 6 months ago : sold my old collection and strated to build some competitive decks for different formats. In Modern, I built Bogles for its low cost, low interaction and facility to pilot for a guy returning to the game. I'm going to GP Toronto 2018 next week and, even if I considered playing my U/W Control deck, I decided to go for the underdog and play my Bogles deck and catch the metagame off-guard with the strong White sideboard cards. I'll put my list here, I would like some advices from fellow Bogles players! Keep in mind that I'm no pro-player, just a guy who goes to a GP for the experience and the fun of it.
So, I'm going for a Sideboard extension in the main deck with 3x Path to Exile and 3x Leyline of Sanctity in the main board, as they are key against Grixis Death Shadow. The sideboard is pretty self-explanatory : x3 RIP versus Storm, Control, Living End / Path to Exile versus creature based decks / Eidolon of Rhetoric against Burn, Storm, Living End / x2 Gaddock against CoCo, Tron, UWx Control / Leylines versus targeting, LotV, Thoughtseizes and Inquisition / Seal of Primoridum versus Affinity, Lantern, Spellskite, Blood Moon / Stony Silence for Affinity and Lantern, etc.
I've meddled with the Unfliching Courage in the main deck but I've found that they are too slow. When you have them in hand, it's either playing it, or play 3 other 1CMC spells.
I think that's about it! It's my first post here, so be kind If I made any error please lol ^^ What do you think about this list? What should I add or cut? Thanks and have a good day!
I will see you in Toronto next weekend. I will be running Bogles and pretty close to the exact 75 your running (and entirely foil to boot) I am playing a Gryff Boon over the Ledgewalker your running and i have a second spirit link in the board over eidolon.. I also agree Unflinching courage isn't needed at 3 cmc.. I prefer Seal over dissenters because in Bogles I just want to play out my stuff and not have to hold up mana..
So I'm a combined 1-9 with Bogles over the last couple of months.. I love this deck but until Deaths Shadow is less of a factor Bogles is hot garbage... Having to run main deck leylines to beat Shadow isn't the problem... it hurts but not that much... the real problem is that most sideboard cards that are good against Shadow are good against us... So many Deflecting Palms and blessed alliances and chalice of the Void out there... hell yesterday I got wrecked by Golgari Charm... I love Bogles and will anxiously wait for a meta game shift...
So we decided to run main-deck Leylines. The rationale being is that I'm in the middle seat. We anticipate a majority of teams to have a jund/death shadow variant, most likely in the middle. We think it will pull its weight so much that it will be worth it, so thanks for the suggestion. I feel this will increase our match percentage by going in that direction without effecting our matches against aggro variants. Sadly though we only can run one or two paths main to fit for this. We have 6 umbras, but I wonder if you believe going to 5 for the sake of more path is worth it. Open the Amory has been so good for us we are hesitant to cut it. We are going to do a 3/1 split with kor and ledgewalker. We are moving away from the suppression fields as well. Where is path the most important so we can talk about its numbers in the 75? More to come.
Very simply put I feel the Open should be cut if your going to run maindeck hate cards because you want to minimize the number of non Bogle non Aura cards.. if your cutting low on the paths this helps as I never like to have that number above 6 and as a rule of thumb I raise that number to a max 8 when sideboardin. Any cut in Umbras should always be Hyenas.. the deck is often more taxed on white mana.. I've never been caught with too many green Auras in hand.. I like 6 Umbras especially if your running a Spiritdancer build.. and most importantly good luck to you.
And Also, some of my team mates are pressuring me to put in Suppression field and cut my searches down to 5 with only 2 canopy. How do you feel about this. They feel it will be especially good against Ad, Tron, Affinity and Living End.
Supression Field is a reasonable maindeck card. Personally I'm not a huge fan since it's almost completely dead in quite a few matchups. It's not great against Ad Nauseam as it only works against Lightning Storm but not Laboratory Maniac and it's dead after sideboard because of Patrician's Scorn. It's pretty decent against Tron but they can often still do the same thing a turn later while you slowed yourself down a turn too. Against affinity it's good against some draws but again it slows you down and they can often just ignore it. You will probably still need a lifelinking Bogle to win. Against Living End it's also not that great. It will slow down their cycling a bit but yet again it slows you down a similar amount and they'll still blow you out with a Living End a turn later or with a few creatures fewer.
Still, these matchups aren't really the problem though as it's at the very least decent there. The problem is there's a number of matchups like Burn, Bant Eldrazi, RG Valakut, Storm and so on where it's almost completely dead. Cards that are completely dead in some matchups really need to pull their weight in the others and I'm not sure it does that. If you do decide to run it I'd recommend still playing 4 Canopies and 8 fetches though.
Regarding the rest of what you say writing a matchup guide for 15 different matchups is a bit too much to ask I'm afraid. I feel like Bogles isn't that well positioned in general right now as there's a rather high prevalence of maindeck Discard/Lilianas and a lot of Chalices and Blessed Alliance to watch out for. Still, the Burn/Affinity/Merfolk matchups are still great so perhaps it's a good choice. Your sideboard looks very standard and reasonable.
I agree with your assessment of main deck Supression Field. I've tried it and didn't like it for the exact reasons you list. Plus it isn't great on the draw as you can't punish fetch lands as much. I do disagree with not altering the land base if you do run them. I wouldn't cut down on the canopy but cutting down fetches I feel is a must. But I only run 6 anyways.
I'm curious on your thoughts on maindeck Leylines. I know that there are dead matchups for it but most of them are already in Bogles favor. I switched to doing this because of all the discard effects and Liliana currently.
Ok, talk to me here. Do you believe taking out path for leyline is worth considering? What matchups would suffer and which would improve? We like stoney a lot because of tron, affinity and ad. Do you believe supression is better than stoney in those spots? We expect affinity to be very popular. Also, what matchups does kor shine the most in? I assume against elves, merfolk and ad N you would run her out turn 2. Im also very concerned about b eldrazi.
I don't recommend taking out the paths. Far too valuable. I trimmed other fat from the deck to fit in Leylines (unflinching courage. Open the armory and a hyena umbra in my list). As far as Stony goes I have deffinately not seen alot of affinity lately due to it being a bad matchup against death shadows early discard. If your worried about it I understand why you run 3. I warn you though that I don't like it in the tron matchup. It's good against eldrazi tron but I like that matchup already. Against traditional style tron I find Pithing Needle to be much better as it can also stop Ugin. I think that suppression field does more as a catchall and also hits decks like Abzan. It does nothing against Ad Naus but I've made the decision that the matchup is so bad I won't devote sideboard slots to it and just hope I can dodge it. You are right about whay matchups Kor is good in. But right now I'm running only 2 and might cut it down to 1. Silhana Ledgewalker is just better in a fatal push world. AND as far as Bant Eldrazi it's all about not getting hit by Chalice. This matchup is a great reason for running 2 maindeck spirit mantles at the least. If they don't have Chalice they have no answer and you can get them in situations where there forced to make bad blocks. I board in my 4th path and my spirit link. I also bring in my Seals just for the Chalice. I actually like this matchup alot more than my Bant Spirits matchup.
I personally like the Seal because you can play it out when you want and don't have to hold up mana. I want to still be putting on pressure. I used to run nature's claim but Chalice seems to be everywhere with the rise of Eldrazi decks. I would side with Naturalize over Disenchant simply because later in games I usually have more available green mana.
So I'm playing Bogles this weekend in San Antonio. I have some experience but not more than 20 matches, our team feels that it's positioned well against decks we feel will be popular like burn, merfolk and affinity. I was wondering if anyone would take a few min and let me know what to look out in some of the match-ups, any tips would be great. We feel like these match-ups will be popular this weekend:
Tron
Company decks
Burn
Affinity
Ad Nauseam
R/G Scapeshift (Valakut)
R/G Revolt Zoo
Puresteel Paladin
Merfolk
Elves
Death's Shadow
Skred Red
Dredge
Living End
G/R Land Destruction
Do you believe the deck is as well positioned as we feel? What do these individual match-ups look like to you more experienced players? Currently, the sb of the deck looks like:
3 Stony
2 Teeg
4 Leyline
3 Rest
2 Seals
Anyways, If you van provide some sb tips as well, It would be greatly appreciated.
Alright.. let's do this..
Tron- there are 2 different tron decks.. eldrazi tron is easier and watch out for chalices. Traditional tron is worse Ugin and O stone hurt plus sometimes blessed alliance now out of board.
Company Decks- rely on spirit mantle. Field main or in board is good here.. pride mage is the biggest threat and sometimes rec sage..
Burn- DEFLECTING PALM
Affinity- all about the lifegain and evasion here. I board in stony silence and supression field..
Ad Naus- in my opinion this is an auto loss and the matchup is so board I won't dedicate board slots to it.. they are just faster in most cases and can stay alive.
Scape shift or Titanshift- I like this matchup. Watch out for anger of the Gods. Lifegain helps buy time and Leyline out of board buys more.
Revolt Zoo- lifegain.. another matchup heavy in our favor. Don't be afraid to hold back and block if needed.
Puresteel- haven't played it yet.. keep path up and board in leyline
Merfolk- fear spreading seas. The best way for them to win is deny mana. Boarding in seal helps to prevent this and turn off island walk. .
Elves- bad matchup.. path is key here and don't be afraid to waste early mana dorks with it.. put early pressure and force them to have to play defensive..
Death's Shadow- this is why I'm falling with maindeck Leylines. There hand disruption is rough.. rest in peace is a workhorse here.
Skred- no experience against it.. fear anger again.. rely on lifegain and kill quick.
Dredge- I like the matchup. Lifegain and spirit Mantle help. Collective brutality can suck to play against..
Living End- kill quick and board in rest in peace.. we have no defence against there boardwipe.
RG land destruction- scoop.. it's that bad.. blood moon hurts and then they blow up your basics.. anger of the Gods too.
Jund- keep up a fetch to get arbor in a pinch to stop LotV. Leyline out of board. Watch out for anger and kozileks return from the board..
I agree wit you and your firends that it is well positioned well right now.. as far as your sideboard.. 3 stony silence feel like too much.. I run 1.. I like having extra spirit links in the board and also the 4th path... I have tried the maindeck supression fields recently at a major tourney and it didn't feel great. Mind you I didn't play alot of the matchups I thought I would.. Right now I'm a huge supporter of running 2-3 Leyline in the main as they really hurt deaths shadows plan and many other decks.. hope this helps and good luck.. may your day be filled with blanking fatal pushes...
Quick report from a side event at Face 2 Face games open.
Rd 1 W 2-1 vs 4c Kiki Chord (1-0) I get game 1 pretty fast. Game 2 I keep a hand with both my Spiritdancer and pray. First gets pathed but the second sticks. Lethal on board when he plays Stonehorn Dignitary and makes me skip combat. I draw 5 cards looking for a path and don't find it. He Resto Angels it. I dig another 7 cards deep and still don't find a path. He Evolutions into the combo. Game 3 keep a great hand and hold up a path for the combo. Had to use it when he went to blink a Rec Sage and felt safe as he was shy on red and he had only a Resto and a BoP. I attack following turn and he Chords for Selfless Spirit to save his bird he blocked with. I explain he's dead to trample from a Rancor. He says I cheated and covered it up with the bogle despite him knowing I had it from when the Rec Sage took it out early and sent it back to my hand. His buddy sitting beside him tells him to grow up and sign the match slip. Lol.
Rd 2 L 1-2 vs GW Tron (1-1) paired down into a bad matchup. Get game 1 easily. Game 2 have a Bogle with multiple totem armor and a Needle on Ugin. She plays and blows an O stone to kill my needle and slow me down and plays Ugin turn after. Game 3 I feel in good shape but she has turn 3 Karn (not sure why she left it in) to take out my only white source.
Rd 3 W 2-0 vs Grixis Delver (2-1) not much to say here. Won a quick 2 games and had to bait out mana leaks and spell snares correctly which I did.
Rd 4 W 2-1 vs Merfolk (3-1) played against my broski I rode to the tourney with. Game 1 I win on the play. Game 2 he locks me out with Spreading Seas. Seal of Primordium almost saves me in time. Game 3 I keep a Bogle heavy mull to 6. He swings in with a 2/2 Curse catcher and is shocked when I block with an auraless bogle. I tap out to path my own blocker trying to get a second white source for Daybreak. He goes into the tank and eventually sacs the Curse catcher. I top deck Seal for his Spreading Seas and win.
Rd 5 L 0-2 vs GR Ponza (3-2) paired down again into a horrible matchup. Turn 2 blood moon wins game 1. Fetch basics in game 2 but die to a blood moon and Acid Mosses on my basics. Thragtusk bought him enough time.
Not a horrible day as I won enough cash to cover my entry. Deff sucks getting paired down twice into bad matchups but that's how the game goes sometimes. Managed to pick up alot of sweet foils for the deck and am down to just needing 2 more foil temple gardens to make the whole deck shine.
Before I pass this exchange back to you, there WAS a very interesting idea from one of the players there. Before the tournament started, I played a casual match against a Blue/White Control player. After losing 0-2 against him thanks to Blessed Alliance and Cryptic Command, he wondered aloud why no Bogles players sideboard Ranger of Eos against some of the grindier matchups. Honestly? It would reduce the odds of drawing into a Bogle, while ensuring that we have a backup plan in case Engineered Explosives or an Edict effect answers our threat. However, the Ranger would be at the top of our curve, increasing the chance that he'd be force-discarded or countered. What are your thoughts?
Personally, I am not comfortable trying to cast a 4 drop in this deck. Especially running Horizon canopy's - 4 mana is just something hard to depend on having. Definitely worth testing though.
I couldn't agree more. I seldomly make it to 4 mana and can't count the number of times I wish I got to 4 with a drawn Leyline in hand. If I played a non Canopy version though I could deff see this being a good sideboard card.
So Deaths Shadow is a bad matchup? I thought with lifelink we might be OK as long as we're on the play Game 1.
Yeah ..well Kolaghan's Command is brutal, and not to mention 4 Thoughtseize and 4 Inquisitions!
I think this is why the list above was running maindeck Leylines and prob the best way to improve the matchup. Personally I think Bogles is positioned decently well right now with the amount of targeted removal. Decks like Eldrazi tron run less Ugin and O stone and even new liliana is strating to cut into LotV s play. That being said the deck needs Ledgewalker more than Spiritdancer right now and I feel that takes a little away from the deck explosiveness.
And folks thought I was nuts for wanting to play Glistener Elf in the SB.... Anyone happen to know why this list would want to run a singleton lifelink in the SB rather than an additional spirit link?
Any reason I can think of to run Lifelink involves very fringe situations like against Nevermore or Cranial Extraction or False Cure. Why wouldn't you want double lifegain.?
Glad I got to see this in person.. I went 3-3 drop with virtually the same build.. had a blast though.. a lot of Bogles in the room.. atleast 10 decks day 1
