I get what Wotc is trying to do, I think. However, the art doesn't do anything for me. I think it will be fun to do 2hg sealed or whatever but I probably won't buy packs. WOTC knows that will be a popular sentiment so they were like "what if we added a few lotto cards?", which I think is a ploy to sell lots and boxes.

I will give them points for creativity, it sure is different.

I try new brews every week, and people are overwhining on Karn. He's great, don't get me wrong, but often times playing him in turn four or five costs you the game against aggro. Monored and any of the current Vehicles lists couldn't really care less. If you don't stabilize the board, or at the very least slow it down before dropping Karn, he isn't going to help you. If you are dead on board turn four, Karn won't help much.

Where he does his magic is in the Aggro decks, once they have establish board presence, they play a Karn so they can gain advantage to either increase board presence or recover after a wipe.

Think about an Aggro deck with Ruin Raider and Karn. That is drawing 3 cards per turn. In my Mono black deck, that just keeps filling my hand with more removal and creatures and the game gets away from them fast.

guess it depends on what you call the worst. I find that at least in my area, Yugioh and DBZ players are more annoying/have worse hygiene. There are some people like that in the Magic community but not as bad. I think that the big problem with my area at least is fighting/drama between certain groups

I'm envisioning a really nerdy West Side Story type thing here.

Yugioh players really did that? Bringing real sword. That's crazy.

Ya...the swords...that is the crazy part.

I would rather face someone down with a sword than a handful of fecal matter any day.

OP has never played Dota 2

But yes, MTG is cancerous. God forbid I beat any of the "top" players at my store. It gets old to listen to them whine.

They are super nice, when they are winning. But if they lose, especially to someone who they deem "not as good" they turn into children.

I cracked a non foil and out it in my mono black aggro. It has played a hand in winning me a few games. I would trade the foil for 2x regular and put them in a deck, but that's just me.

Or trade them for modern staples.

I find that once you make the initial excel database it is relatively easy to maintain. But I suppose take that statement with a grain of salt, because I look for every excuse I can come up with to use excel. I really just love excel.

On a scale of 1-10, how much do you love Pivot Tables?

There is a lot you can do with a 1/100000001 Cleric.

Sac it for a bunch of life via ayli, eternal pilgrim Starlit Sanctum or you can play Transmutation and attack with a huge dude, or you can sac it via (I forget the cards that do this) and deal X damage where X is the creatures power.

There are TONS of black and white cards where you can sac something and gain life based on its toughness.

You can also use some of that life to make the rest of your creatures big with Unspeakable symbol

It is a good EDH combo, not too easy to get so not OP, but at the same time, you can use various cards to achieve the affect.

Once this guy brought this girl with him from work who knows the rules but was clearly new to modern. I asked the guy "can you please not bring your girlfriend over to magic, it ruins the fun for the people she gets paired against. If I get paired against her, I would just 2-0 for you and not bother to put up with her."

Remember, it is not what you say, it is how you say it. Depending on the exact verbiage you used, it may not have been toxic.

Guys... I'm sorry but this makes me feel ashamed as a Magic player. What? I understand playing against a new player won't help you get prepped for the next Grand Prix or whatever, but playing one game and maybe teach someone new is so repulsive you have to 1. demean the player 2. demean their friend? Jeez. Yes, it's totally toxic. Otherwise maybe play with your friends around the kitchen table, because being in public means you'll have to interact with new people. Plus it should be a free 2-0 for you, which I'd gladly take in a tournament.

Stereotypes given to people who play Magic exist for a reason...I have never seen such a concentrated amount of social ineptness in one room until I went to my LGS for the first time.

I played against a chick who didnt know the rules that well, this was her first time playing at FNM, and she was really new. I gritted my teeth and was nice and polite, and helped her. Even if it was a little painful. No way I would have been a jerk to her. The last thing we want to do is scare all women away from the game. I would wager the thing that keeps most women away from MTG or at least FNM at the LGS is the men who play magic.

  • posted a message on Are you going to try Brawl?
If my store offers some sort of event on Saturdays that involves some sort of prizing structure I will probably play it. As it stands I have nothing to do Saturday evening.

    My reasons are pragmatic.

It seems like a good diea.

I think a lot of people look at this question like "Would you play Brawl instead of EDH?" but really it is just "Would you play brawl". I would play it, or at least try it. What do I have to lose? I already have an extensive standard collection because I play standard.

This is the commander board, so people who just play commander and buy singles instead of getting the newest standard cards to play standard, are not what this format is aimed at. This is not for getting rid of commander, it is just supplementing existing formats.

This will appeal to people who:

    A. already play standard and have standard cards
    B. People who draft a lot, but don't play standard so they have all these cards already
    C. New players who are intimidated by standard and to some degree commander
    D. Players who have a local commander meta that is not fun for them (i.e. full of try-hards pumping $1k into decks, not interested in casual play or the social aspect, only interested in winning, consistant use of early turn insta-win combos)

    Just my thoughts.

I do a lot of draft, since I alrady have a bunch of cards from drafting, I play standard. Since I have those cards, and my standard cards are going to rotate, I may as well play brawl and get the most out of those cards while they are playable in a rotating format. If you are already playing standard, Brawl is an easy transition.

I do worry about there being 1 or 2 Brawl decks that are all powerful, and being the only thing you see. I guess they could always ban cards in brawl but not standard, if need be.

    Time will tell....

I would hate to play in a Game Stop store, it just would not feel right.

I know the point is to attract new players, but it would be annoying to play in the store constantly surrounded my non Magic players milling around and whatnot.

I like my LGS. I suppose if I did not have an LGS I would be behind this idea. But, I dont want WOTC to drive

As opposed to most FLGSs, where people are milling around for RPG books, miniatures, other card games' products...?

Exactly, I have one LGS in my area that is more event-focused and has table space for large events. Most are game or comic book shops where magic is a sideshow and they have a couple of tables in the back and/or drag out a few in the main product area for prereleases.

Magic is pretty much the primary focus at my store, I guess every store is different.

I think our experiences may vary. At my LGS, the focus is on Magic. Usually during events, it is very rare that there is a lot of people doing things other than MTG. There are some dedicated tabletop gaming tables, and a backroom dedicated for Board games. Other than that, just the occasional customer looking for something. When I am at Gamestop, I often see 10-15 customers in there consistently, far less than it would be at my LGS. YMMV

  • posted a message on If WOTC decided to sell the Land Station of the general public, what do you think?
If WOTC is going to sell lands, it has to be more than just lands.

Here is what I would like to see them do. I would like to see them sell packs of 121 cards, call it an "accessory pack"
-20 each of the 5 basic lands. The land art has to be unique to this product, maybe with a special set symbol just for this. The art must be new, and unique, not a reprint. This art would only be available in this product.
-10 premium lands- Foil versions of the above lands
-10 premium foil tokens of random, commonly used types.
-A special, unique spindown counter or life counter of some type.
-Alternate art, foil, standard legal card rare/mythic that can only be had in these packs.

    People would buy this.

Also, I miss the old 75 card Tournament packs...
