Yeah, that deck looks super sweet. Have a sb? I imagine you'd need some out to Chalice of the Void. Really like some of the spicy tech cards (GM).

It's not any good. First, sixteen lands and shard volley is bad. Seal of Fire is a terrible burn card. I'm willing to bet that deck was goldfished and never played against any actual opponents. BR burn is a pet project that has virtually no high-level results, and there is a good reason for that. It isn't as good as standard Boros.

See I have no problem with being an ********, that's why I'm kinda glad this forum is going away. Censorship, politics, the people behind the scenes are just the worst about these sorta things.

    Big Mana>slow fair>fast unfair>big mana

    Feels good to me. Rock/paper/scissors

Yes, take the censors off and let the forum end its days in glorious chaos! More blood for the blood gods!

Went 2-3 in a Saturday tournament, some things of note:

    1. Tron is still a good matchup. I keep hearing tron players say they are doing well against burn, so I question their opponents' ability.
    2. Don't play Magic competitively while hung over. I punted my first match, as I do every time I go out on a Friday night then try to sling spells Saturday.
    3. I lost 2-1 to jund where game one featured taking my opponent's life to two only to not see an instant-speed burn spell (goblin guide got discarded by instant-speed Kcommand, as did swiftspear the following turn). Quite literally, a game where a sunbaked canyon would have won the match.

I'd rather just beat tron by being faster than using blood moon.

Archmage's Charm, have they finally made a Cancel with enough upside to be Modern playable? Seems like an interesting card.

I think so. It basically is a solid answer to anything that isn't a two drop. It steals one-drops against aggro decks, counters spells from combo, and generates CA against control and midrange, all at instant speed. And because it does everything, it means more room in a control deck's 75 for more specific cards.

Modal spell, all three modes are useful, UUU cost makes it prohibitive to all but dedicated blue decks. Sure, I'm cool with it. 3 mana at instant speed for two cards is good, the counterspell is okay, and taking a permanent at instant-speed is good. It's an answer to one-drops, spells, and a big deal in a control matchup (EOT archmage charm into big papa Jace in UW mirrors sounds fun).

Pillage is a nice little tool for midrange to feature as versatile hate. I can kill a tron land or an ensnaring bridge? Cool.

A quick tournament report, as Monday I went 3-1 with grixis shadow:

    2-0 vs UR wizards
    0-2 vs Elves
    2-0 vs UR Phoenix
2-1 vs BR control (lots of planeswalker stuff going on)

I have been down on shadow as I watch tron, uw and humans tick up in use percentage, but locally it hasn't quite caught on. Phoenix is around in force, but I honestly like that matchup. Amulet Titan sees waves as well, I'm even thinking of building it, but I like that one too. I'm starting to wonder if the PT results have started to shift people's focus, combined with MH spoilers getting people to test new decks. I'm confident in a pair of force of negation within the 75 as a way to tap out early for a planeswalker or gurmag angler and protect it from a dismember or path played during my opponent's turn while I am tapped out. Tron is kinda similar, I have a couple wins and a couple losses where the latter I'm often a turn away before they O-stone or whatever.

I have been playing competitive modern for the past year and a half between burn and grixis shadow, and never felt like the format was garbage. I win some, I lose some. I am a pretty good player in that I started top 8'ing ptqs and cash events in the past year. My locals are very competitive, including names with GP and SCG top 8s, etc. A variety of decks put put up results, and in fact the last SCGQ on my side of the state was taken by UW control.

I think, and this is my opinion but I think it is a valid one, that people fixate on top 8s and championships of high level events to establish the best decks. In that case, grixis shadow and lantern control would be up towards the top, though I know shadow isn't the right type of blue.

The format is healthy because you can select a wide variety of decks with a real chance to win. Modern isn't the same as standard where you can metagame and pick a deck with an even or positive win% against the entire field.

Counterspell is so muxh more than a 4-off in UWx control. It's going to help every conceivable blue deck, from Aggro/Tempo to Combo. It can be played in the SB of merfolks (or main), Knightfall, Delver Strategies etc. Hell, Blue Tron might even play it.

For years the community has been crying thare are no efficient answers in modern to combat degenerate decks (spell based or not and big mana decks) and, arguably, Counterspell is one of those tha will mostly push fair strategies to the forefront.

As for UW control being boring that wins by Teferi's emblem: a) That's extremely subjective and irrelevant to Counterspell's viability in the format and b)extremely untrue, especially post WAR.

No, a handful of people having been crying, as you put it. Please do not conflate all mtg players with a small subset who want to play a specific strategy in a specific format with success. Also, who cares if my opinion is subjective? All opinions are, which is why I say things like "I don't want this" as opposed to "this is proof WOTC isn't paying attention."

I think people are using the "print to demand" phrase to drastically overstate how cheap cards will become. It's not like WOTC will print these infinitely as long as boxes are being sold.

I'm glad to not see counterspell. UW control is already one of the most boring decks to play against in the entire format, and I'd rather WOTC not turn this into standard "I win on a Teferi emblem" matchups to satisfy a small number of players who will only play one very specific deck or complain to no end.

Red force is easily the worst of the cycle and it isn't even close, damn.

Oh well, honestly short of a fireblast or price of progress reprint, burn is about as good as it is going to get. Sunbaked Canyon alone will have significant impact and drastically help the matchups with UW control and GB midrange.

Not to mention new karn is way worse against aggro than old karn...

Here's what new karn did: kicked up its inevitability to 11. I get that. However, the answer to tron has never been to try to outlast it. The answer is always to slide underneath and stick a lightning bolt or glistener elf where the sun don't shine.
