A New and Exciting Beginning
The End of an Era
  • posted a message on [[Official]] What [deck] should I play/buy/get into thread
I'm in a bit of a weird position in looking for a deck I like in legacy. You see, I don't actually know what my preferences are exactly game-play wise- I pretty much never have preferences normally in most areas of life, from video game choice to song choice to, up until now, MTG deck choice; I liked and disliked everything pretty much equally.

However in trying to play MonoBlack reanimator as a budget option for what I have with a rental service on MTGO, I find myself thinking that while I'm having fun, and legacy is definitely for me, the deck just isn't as close to what I think I'd like most as I'd hope.
    The issue is, as this is the first time this has happened, I'm not positive what I am looking for. There are, however, incidental factors that make an impact;

1.) I'm extremely empathetic. This means that I'm going to hate upsetting my opponents by playing my deck, and will want to avoid it if I can. Luckily from what I can tell this isn't *usually* a problem in legacy, however MonoB reanimator seems to be an exception because of the possibility of random turn 1 wins and Hymn.

2.) I *love* personalizing and brewing. It's unlikely that I'll want to play a deck if there's little wiggle room for me to do what I want with it, or try out new things. Reanimator is good for this at least, but due to the above being a major issue it isn't enough.

3.) I prefer to be a bit of an underdog. In legacies case, this means I'll likely want to avoid majorly blue decks if I can (since that's so largely represented, and due to the popularity of brainstorm, ponder,FOW). This also means that I'll want to avoid anything too obvious in regards to a start point, which in this case basically means burn.

4.) Budget: Luckily the small streamer circle I'm in has very large evidence that suggests Cardhoarder is going too be starting up their own rental service for the public soon, I believe with legacy support at far cheaper then what the only other option (manatraders) is offering. So as far as MTGO goes budget likely won't be an issue for me. *however* I would at least like there to be a reasonable chance I could obtain a budget version of whatever deck I end up with in paper one day... so a 4000 dollar floor of a deck in paper would be a no-go :p.

Finally, since I'm still somewhat new to magic in general by about a year, and especially to combo, any complicated-to-execute decks are a no go immediately (this basically only applies to storm, but I figured I'd throw it out there anyway).

Sorry for the long post, but I figured it's better for me to be thorough with this if I can be. Thanks for any help!

EDIT: That is, assuming they use hierarch. I assumed they did because BBE is 4 cmc, but looking at what I could find some brews do and some don't. Even if it's fine not to use mana dorks though, I'd still like a more current and defined example then what I can find through google :p

I would not recommend playing big zoo without Hierach.

If I wanted to play Utopia Sprawl, I'd look to other sprawl decks -- which occasionally splash white for sideboard cards or Path to Exile.
Is it possible to play it without tarmogoyf instead? I assumed it would be easier to replace Heirarch, but if I can't replace either then it's likely I'll never have the budget to play zoo in general. (I wasn't talking about sprawl because I wanted to play it- I was talking about it because I believed it to be the best replacement for heirarch).

So is no one playing Knight of Autumn? It seemed pretty much everything you could want to me

I think we all got a little gunshy of BBE lists after getting torched by Terminus decks. BBE lists are a little slow off the ground and give UW just the right amount of time.

Now that the format is in flux I'll probably return to BBE -- she's great at closing the door against midrange decks and combo decks. BBE lists seem like the place where Knight of Autumn would be most at home. Plus maybe I'll stop losing to Affinity all the time (note: this is a "me" problem and not a zoo problem).

Edit: But I'll be the first to admit that I haven't been able to play any magic. Stupid work.
Speaking of which, do you think you could link me a good example of a BBE zoo list for the current meta? Obviously it won't be perfect as I don't think anyone's made one of those publicly yet, but I think that's what I'm looking for personally, primarily for my LGS' games. In part because I want to see if, as a budget option if nothing else, an arbor/utopia build could work out for me instead of the normal mana dorks (Because being able to cut hierarchs from the list would result in over a third of a cost cut).

EDIT: That is, assuming they use hierarch. I assumed they did because BBE is 4 cmc, but looking at what I could find some brews do and some don't. Even if it's fine not to use mana dorks though, I'd still like a more current and defined example then what I can find through google :p

How does this look for a pelt collector Nayaggro deck? https://www.mtggoldfish.com/deck/1371209#paper . It's fine if you guys don't think it would work, just wanted to see if I could get some opinions before I take it into a league to test.

(I don't know how to use the "deck" function just yet).

Ok, so, it took a bit but I'm caught up now. Turns out Fulgence' list *insn't* that far off from everyone else's... however it seems in general lists are a bit all over the place. Sure each list is doing decently, but I'm not sure there *is* a core other then "green devotion". I'm not really upset by this per- se, but it is something I think should be fixed. Have a post or something outlining the different kinds of green devotion and what they usually entail. Due to this ambiguity, I'm working on my own ideas atm based on what I've seen ,but it'll be a while before I have anything.

So, I found this thread searching for Fulgence' name, as I found this deck because he's been doing well enough consistently enough on mtgo to show up on MTGGOldfish's Modern page. Now, IK that page isn't perfect, as it can't account for nearly all the data even from modo, but the records and deck impressed me enough that I wanted to look into it. Due to A: Devotion being on of my original loves but didn't follow through with it out of worry it wouldn't work, and B: Because it's one of the few decks I like that's within my budget range.
So, this is his current list; https://www.mtggoldfish.com/deck/1342080#paper (Also, if Fulgence is still around and sees this, feel free to comment ;P.)
I have a few criticisms myself, but I'm not the *best* player. In any case, personally I feel there aren't enough company targets to not use chord instead. Second, and he likely changes this, Knight of Autumns instead of Sage and Finks. Third, it needs more grave hate IMO. Personally I'd go with 2 Remorseful Clerics over Rade and the sparkmage, as the clerics are reusable and searchable, and the things they're replacing aren't huge counters to anything.

I've tested this version of mine some, and I think it's doing ok. But in part due to me being new (I played dredge and lost to a titanshift deck that didn't play shift the whole match), and because anything can do "well" in modern, I wanted other opinions.

EDIT: In case you didn't know, Fulgence came up once before in this thread, but from what I can tell his list has changed almost completely since then.
EDIT #2; After analyzing past posts more, I can tell there's also a huge difference in Fulgence' and your lists, the latter of which are far more focused on land enchants it seems. I'm fine with whatever works, however this means in order to make a good comparison I'd like to echo the above statement by ARK to see a "core" list of cards (for your guys version).

Shadow without Tarns, Lilis, and Leylines has to be close to $800. What cards do you already have?
THe cards I already have is zero :P. Thus my issue. Been thinking I *may* just go with dredge in any case.. it's not as malleable as I'd like, but it's within budget and I can somewhat customize it so I suppose it could work. Was just hoping there would be a more perfect fit.

    Hollow One, or Bridgevine?

I mean what are you looking to do with the GY? As Foretold Living End?
That's the thing, really any kind of graveyard interaction works. But Hollow One and Bridgevine aren't very modular,as far as IK. That is, I can't change much in them without worrying heavily about whether it will work.

I've had this problem for a while now, and am sort of desperate that someone here can help with it.
I have a *huge* trouble finding a deck to play.
Other then the following, I have no issues, as I'm open to buying any deck (within budget), and seem to not care about color or mechanics otherwise.
1: Grave Based. I say this only because whenever I've brewed decks, they always seem to gravitate towards this. I don't really know *why* I like it though...
2: Modular. By this I mean I can modify it to fit my tastes, or my situation, easily. This is because I'd like to use the deck as a jumping off point for more structured brewing.
3: Within budget. I can't have it be much more then 800 usd, and even that's stretching it.
4: Ideally, competitive enough that I can win with it without relying more on my skill then the average player... seeing as I don't have much.

Issue is, every grave deck I've looked at hasn't been able to fit all of these. Dredge; too restrictive. Deathshadow; Out of Budget. Most selesnya stuff seems too janky to me for me to do well with it. And trust me, I've play tested a *lot* of brews and decks, assuming they weren't out of budget, none of which worked out (using MTGO and a rental system).

Any ideas to help out? Sorry if I did anything wrong here, pretty new to this Shocked
