I took the GP Portland list and changed some spots like adding the 4th Elvish Clancaller and cutting 1 Lead the Stampede. Even though I expected a lot of graveyard decks I had no Scavenging Ooze in the mainboard because I wanted to focus on the "combo" part game one with Beast Whipserer. I can't remember all cards I boarded between matches - I took Dana Fishers sideboardguide and modified it. You can find it on the elves subreddit.
Oh yeah... the manabase is *****ty. I have no Gilt-Leaf Palace but the fetch/shock manabase did the job ok.
Round 1 vs Dredge
G1: oh boy there is the first graveyard deck and my opponent is doing dredge stuff. He puts a lot of power on the board and swings for lethal.
G2: I can land a turn two Elvish Archdruid and turn three Best Whisperer and go off. BW drew me maybe 10 cards, Shaman of the Pack for 11 and then flipping Westvale Abbey and swing for lethal. Wow.
G3: My opp is stuck on one land and I resolve a company with double Shaman. GG.
1-0
Round 2 vs Spirits
G1: Opp played 2-3 Spell Queller and many lords wich was enough.
G2: I build up a good board with three lords but his airforce was pretty strong. I tried go all-in because it would be lethal unblocked and I would be dead on the backswing if he finds another lord. Opp blocks everything wich wasn't necessary and loses his lords. So now I'm back in the game and even another lord don't kill me. He finds nothing and I swing for the win.
G3: Opp stuck on two lands and I play go off with Beast Whisperer.
2-0
Round 3 vs 8-Rack
G1: I have to mulligan to 6 and don't know what I'm against. He starts with discard into The Rack into Liliana of the Veil. Somehow I steal the game with 2 dorks and Archdruid.
G2: I have to mulligan again because no-lander. 6 cards show me land and double Heritage Druid... I think this is better than going down to 5... Long story short he has enough removal and lands Lili on an empty board.
G3: Again no manadork in hand but a solid 7. I keep and we both have slow starts. He plays The Rack and pressure my lifetotal. I can kill him with a two turn clock or attack and Shaman of the Pack. I drew a land and put all on the two turn clock. He finds noch mass removal but plays 2x Rack and Shrieking Affliction... GG
2-1
Round 4 vs. BG Rock
G1: He starts with tapland into field of ruin and bob. He has no interaction and I go off with Beast Whisperer+Heritage Druid.
G2: T1 discard Archdruid and I play Heritage druid, float 3 mana and play Ooze, eat my Archdruid. On his turn he finds no land and push my Ooze and passes. I go off with a lot of mana, Collected Company into double Shaman of the Pack. It wasn't lethal but opp scoops due tilt.
3-1
Round 5 vs Hollow1
G1: I got beat up by the menace dude...
G2: Turn 1 Grim Lavamancer keeps me in check and I never get a foot on the ground.
3-2
Round 6 vs Jund:
G1: Blackcleave Cliffs into Bolt... oh no. But I can recover and he plays a Bob and Goyf. Assassin's Trophy blows up Archdruid, giving me an additional land and I go off with Heritage Druid and 4 Clancaller.
G2: My opp plays turn 2 Cage into Turn 3 Ooze. My board looks solid and I have the decision to either decay the cage or the Ooze. I decay the Ooze because it can keep him in the game. Opp play a tapped land on his fourth turn. I swing for a good amount of damage and opp falls down to two. Turn 5 he plays his Damnation wich he couldn't play due his tapped land turn 4. I topdeck a Shaman of the Pack, play my Elvish Mystic in hand, slam Shaman, drain 2. GG #betterluckythangood
4-2
Round 7 vs GW Hatebears:
G1: Turn two Mirran Crusader is tough... but I missplayed pretty hard and lost. I cast Beast Whisperer and pass the turn. He swings for a lot with Crusader. I play Archdruid and miss my BW trigger ... cast another creature and this time I don't miss it. Drew Llanowar Elves this one would saved me because I had one more blocker but had no mana left.
G2: super tilt. Keep one lander with double Elves of Deep Shadow. Loose 6 life because I never drew another land. Mirran Crusader hammers the nail into the coffin.
4-3
At first I was super tilted... 5-2 and I would enter the prices... But after coming back home it felt good to pilot Elves again. Beast Whisperer is a real card! Not sure if it's better to play Nettle Sentinel and Elvish Visionary but I think Beast Whisperer will be an a staple in modern elves. It's really powerful!
I had a lot issues with my sideboard. Don't play Nissa, Vital Force it's a trap card. She is better in BG Rock or other decks with more lands.
For me Elves is a pretty strong deck! Also it's a good deck to start modern, "cheap" to build, easy to learn and hard to master.
what are your thoughts on nettle sentinel VS elves of deep shadow in GB elves(coco/lead)?
since GB elves is more aggro it is relevant with the 1 power more? Beside that the elves of deep shadow gives more consistency.
want to take elves on a bigger local tournament in an unknown meta
I like playing Elves of Deep Shadow over Nettle Sentinel in the BG version because you have a higher chance of playing Archdruid on turn 2 or Company on turn 3 and you have more manadoeks in general. Also Elves of Deep Shadow support Shaman of the Pack and your sideboard plan if you're playing Thoughtseize, etc.
Thank you for the reply and awesome you tested the deck
What matches did you play and how was Beast Whisperer for you?
- Objectively, what is the mainboard better against? We have both Coco and Chord + Bullets in the sideboard to go both faster and grindier. Which begs the question, which decks is the 60 better against?
That's the point. The Whisperer-List is good vs any fair strategy - the Coco-list too. The Coco list is even stronger vs Control decks or any other removal.dec... maybe Beast Whisperer can steal some games but in the end it could be too cute.
- Sideboarding: My thoughts are that you bring in Coco in place of Cradle when you expect your creatures to die. And chord package instead of Beast Whisperers when you need a narrow answer to a specific archtype/deck.
That make sense! I often feel Chord of Calling is one of those cards you board out the most because your opponent will likely board more removal.
It hasn't been updated in a while. I haven't played Elves in a tournament in quite a while, but I play test at home like crazy. The whole 75 is foil and I just got 4 foil Cavern of Souls (glad I waited) and I literally don't know where to fit them in. I'm assuming the Blooming Marshes?
I don't like Westvale Abbey but that depends on the meta. Also I don't like some sideboard cards like Heroic Intervention and Essence Warden. Otherwise it's a pretty "stock" list you cant go wrong with.
The fetch/shock package is a substitute for Gilt-Leaf Palace. For now I never had problems with two basics but I play elves only when my playgroup is testing or "just for fun".
###
I have to change topic once again... The posted list with Beast Whisperer boggles my mind. Yesterday I brewed up following list after watching a video of "LegenVD" on youtube.
So... let me break down some choices:
-Beast Whisperer: Keycard which functions as a poormans Glimpse of Nature on a stick. BW can be abused into oblivion and win the game on the spot. More later.
-Nettle Sentinel: also a keycard for you combo to produce "infinite" green mana with one Heritage Druid.
-Elvish Visionary: cantrip to find combopieces.
-No spells: when you start drawing with BW every creature is a re-draw. If you're generating tons of mana you could slam all CoCos in the world but sometimes you need to draw a creature to go off.
For now I only goldfished the deck so don't expect this is 100% corret or even good in any sense
Basicly resolving a Beast Whisperer is game. You can go-off in the same turn when you have enough mana open, Elvish Archdruid or Nettle Sentinel+Heritage Druid. In this spot it feels like a "Storm" deck. You play a dude, draw a card and search your library for Shaman of the Pack. "But why just don't play Chord of Calling?" Because Chord can be countered and shaman not (in case you have the cavern!). Also you have a plan B by playing the fair game and play/draw natural into your Shamans. If the Shaman plan A and B don't work you also can win the next turn by attacking with just about 10.000.000.000 green people.
The lack of Collected Company is strange and I'm sure you lose a lot of win% against UWx/BGx. With Company you can turn close games or comeback after sweepers. Not sure if BW need to much setup...
Maybe I'll test the deck at a FNM in two weeks. I'll let you know!
Maindeck looks solid.
I'm a big fan of Elves of Deep Shadow. I'm not 100% with Jeff Hoogland's opinions but I think he's right with playing 12 manadorks. Also they help you cast your black speels from the SB.
I only play 2 copies of Ezuri as I feel he's sometimes too clunky but I think 3 copies are super ok. I play one Scavenging Ooze in this spot.
For the sideboard I think a second Ooze is nice to have. On the other hand I'm not fully sold on Relic of Progenitus. In my meta there're a lot of Storm, Un-Storm, Tron and Amulet Titan play so I really like having at least 2x Damping Sphere in the board. Against Dredge and other Combodecks I play 2x Surigcal Extraction.
Hey folks!
Finally I finished the deck *SPOILER: NOT REALLY*! Traded some stuff for the missing Cavern of Souls and now I'm on the humans-train (better later than never).
The only thing missing are 2x Horizon Canopy. I'll get my hands on my third copy this week. For now I played 2x Razorverge Thicket which were ok but not great.
My overall record is 11-5. Not much but I'm starting to get a feeling.
Some things I want to point out:
-Reflector Mage is king! In my meta the 4th copy in the main is really strong.
-Militia Bugler is also a good card! I started to playtest with 2x Thalia, Heretic Cathar. She was good but did nothing sometimes. I prefer Bugler in grindy matchup as I tend to be low on gas.
-Meddling Mage is a tough magiccard.
-Sequencing: I often struggle which one drop is the best. For me it's safe to play T1 Aether Vial. The choice between Champion of the Parish and Noble Hierarch is often pro Hierarch. I think it's better to lose the Dork if you have enough mana in your hand then your threat.
-Sideboard: I made a SB-Guide based on Ondrej Straskys tips in his blog. It helps a lot. Sometimes I still overboard. Especially with Whirler Rogue. Not sure in which matchups it's the best card.
-Playing with Aether Vial... I'm a aggro guy. Slam my stuff and win (or die). Things like holding priority, faking a vial activation, ticking the right sweet spot are all the things I have to learn... the important thing for me is to play steady and dont rush my turn.
Hey, sorry for crashing this party but maybe someone can help me out.
I'm currently building humans and trading the last pieces together. My problem are the last 5 cards but I cant wait to test the deck.
What would you substitute for the following cards:
2x Horizon Canopy
3x Cavern of Souls
First of all I know how good those cards are and I know they're the back of the deck but I think it will be ok for testting and smaller FNM.
I would play 2x Razorverge Thicket for the Canopies. But what for the Cavern? 3x City of Brass or maybe 2 shocklands 1 fetch?
On Knight of Autumn:
1. Yes, it is not a Spirit, but neither is Qasali Pridemage, Thalia, Guardian of Thraben, etc. that have seen play in the deck. The fact is, Spirits does not have the near infinite variety of cards Humans has, and even then, both Tribes have to pull in some non-Tribe peeps to get the job done.
Yeah, don't get me wrong. The "all tribal"-thing was more of a joke. I think Knight of Autumn is super flexible card and should be played if you can afford the manacost.
Short FNM report:
Round 1 lost 1-2 vs UB Faeries. Game one I played the control game. Game two and three I lost to bad sideboarding, Cryptic Command and beeing dumb.
Round 2 I won 2-0 vs Grixis Shadow. Everything my opponent could do wrong he did wrong. A lot of misplay on his side.
Round 3 2-1 vs Saheeli Combo. Game one I lost because I had no Path/Queller. Game 2 and 3 I kept all my interaction for his combopieces and in the last swing Thalia, Guardian of Thraben saved my arse by taxing his Settle the Wreckage.
Round 4 lost 0-2 vs Grixis Shadow. Game one was close but he had the saving push. If I had played defensive I would draw a Spell Queller wich would safe me. Game two mulligan to 5, no business vs. turn 3 Angler/Shadow/Shadow
Deck felt ok. Still not playing to my outs, still a lot to learn!
My oppinion is: if we can generate 7 mana we should win the game without Chord of Calling. I would add another two Beast Whisperer and the 4th Nettle Sentinel and cut the Chord of Calling.
what do you think of the discussion spirits is the new go to aggro deck?

Hey!
Depends on your sideboard. Vs Spirits I board +2 Abrupt Decay -2 Lead the Stampede. Against Burn +2 Scavenging Ooze +2 Reclamation Sage -3 Lead the Stampede -1 Ezuri, Renegade Leader.
Elves made a top 8 finish at GP Portland!
4x Elvish Mystic
4x Llanowar Elves
3x Elves of Deep Shadow
4x Heritage Druid
4x Dwynen's Elite
2x Ezuri, Renegade Leader
3x Elvish Clancaller
4x Elvish Archdruid

2x Scavenging Ooze
2x Reclamation Sage
2x Thoughtseize
2x Surgical Extraction
2x Phyrexian Revoker

List looks really cool with the 2x Beast Whisperer. What do you think?

Foiled out elves is spicy! I'd rather cut Westvale Abbey and some basics. My configuration for now is:
4x Blooming Marsh
4x Cavern of Souls
1x Pendlehaven
1x Misty Rainforest
1x Wooded Foothills
1x Windswept Heath
2x Overgrown Tomb
2x Forest
2x Horizon Canopy
The fetch/shock package is a substitute for Gilt-Leaf Palace. For now I never had problems with two basics but I play elves only when my playgroup is testing or "just for fun".

I have to change topic once again... The posted list with Beast Whisperer boggles my mind. Yesterday I brewed up following list after watching a video of "LegenVD" on youtube.
ElveStorm
4x Elvish Mystic

4x Cavern of Souls
1x Pendlehaven
1x Misty Rainforest
1x Wooded Foothills
1x Windswept Heath
2x Overgrown Tomb
2x Forest
2x Horizon Canopy
So... let me break down some choices:
-Beast Whisperer: Keycard which functions as a poormans Glimpse of Nature on a stick. BW can be abused into oblivion and win the game on the spot. More later.
-Nettle Sentinel: also a keycard for you combo to produce "infinite" green mana with one Heritage Druid.
-Elvish Visionary: cantrip to find combopieces.

"But why just don't play Chord of Calling?" I saw some list popping up without Collected Company
One guy finished 2nd place at a bigger local tournament with about 150+ players.
4x Elvish Mystic
4x Llanowar Elves
4x Heritage Druid
4x Nettle Sentinel
3x Elvish Clancaller
4x Elvish Visionary
4x Elvish Archdruid
1x Ezuri, Renegade Leader

4x Gilt-Leaf Palace
4x Horizon Canopy
1x Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx
4x Forest
1x Eidolon of Rhetoric
1x Selfless Spirit
1x Shalai, Voice of Plenty
1x Necrotic Ooze
1x Phyrexian Negator
3x Chord of Calling
4x Collected Company
2x Reclamation Sage
1x Shaman of the Pack
(I think Phyrexian Negator is Phyrexian Revoker and it's a typo... otherwise this list makes even less sense)
Also you can see a similiar deck in the lates upload of Seth Manfield playing BG Rock against Evles on TCGPlayer.

Maybe the creator of the deck is in this forum and can tell us what is the idea of this build?

just wondering why the GW build with Vizier of Remedies isn't played anymore?
Finally I finished the deck *SPOILER: NOT REALLY*! Traded some stuff for the missing Cavern of Souls and now I'm on the humans-train (better later than never).
The only thing missing are 2x Horizon Canopy. I'll get my hands on my third copy this week. For now I played 2x Razorverge Thicket which were ok but not great.

Deck felt ok. Still not playing to my outs, still a lot to learn!
