Mar 13, 2018Fossil Firebird posted a message on Dominaria Spoiler Digest - Who's Who and What's What from the Release NotesI would like to know whether Serra and her realm came back into existence or not. The canon is cloudy there thanks to the novels, and I'm rather hoping she did (so maybe we could see a Serra planeswalker card next set).Posted in: Articles

Except that it was Garruk's own fault that he was cursed by Liliana (whom I am tired of, myself, her and Jace) in the first place. His beast attacked her, was killed, and the moron chased her down and attacked her. As a result of her defending herself, via the Chain Veil, he was cursed. Then he is written like any thirteen-year-old's version of a barbarian badass who overpowers everyone he comes across with rippling sinews and bestial grunts and so on. He's just a terribly-written character whose own meat-headed idiocy got him cursed. I wish they'd kill him and Liliana off at the same time, and Jace, but unfortunately that's all a little too much to ask.
Still, there's no sympathy to Garruk's story here. It's not like he was wrongly cursed or was the innocent victim in all this. He's just as big of a prick as Liliana is, so neither of 'em deserve much in the way of sympathy here.
I believe I've read that they were going to focus less on the Gatewatch and pushing that particular story, but not that their story or anything would be coming to an end. That's about the closest I've seen.
I have to agree. Uncommons would probably be, what, two-ability Planeswalkers with some utility, but not more powerful than a given legendary creature? I mean, they're basically going to be red shirt Planeswalkers, but whatevs.
As someone who has never given up on the dream of making an Angel-themed Modern deck really take off, I agree with this. Anything Angel-related and/or for white that gives it the little bit that it's missing to make this work. I mean, personally, I'd like a new Avacyn that was really good (the original is my favorite creature card in all of Magic, and I'm still pissed they wasted her story) to go with it all, but I'll take what I can get to make this dream a reality.
Also, I am hoping for some or all of the following:
• Zombie Master: I have an Abzan Zombie deck that abuses Wayward Servant, Plague Belcher, and the usual Zombies to really hit the opponent coming and going, and Song of Freyalise to ramp into it or hit that third trigger, then swing in after a Bontu's Last Reckoning or the like resolves. I'd use Zombie Master with Urborg to just skip the middleman and swing straight in.
• Armageddon: I know this one won't happen, because they don't care for land destruction these days, but I'd sure like it. Stick some powerful threats like Lyra Dawnbringer and then blow up the world so they can't easily respond, and overpower them through the air.
• Serra's Sanctum (functional reprint): Sort of like they did with Cabal Coffers and such, I'd like to see a functional reprint of whatever power level is appropriate, so I can combine it with Enchanted Evening for a truly magical land...of world-destroying white spells. "This is our Universe 7 Spirit Bomb!"
Boom. Right there, bringing back a relatively obscure piece of lore, turning it into something cool. Heck, it would have made a great two-set item, and could have kept the investigation into mystery theme. First set: the Church of Avacyn and other factions go to holy war with one another. There seems to be some hidden power fanning these flames of corruption. Second set: Either they were being influenced by this powerful being from another world, or he was only pulling strings that already existed. Either way, now the Angels have their real enemy, and so do the people of Innistrad. Can they find a common ground for peace in time to fight off the invaders?
I disagree. It would actually be okay for one of Magic's good female goddess figures to survive (since they pretty much kill and/or fridge every one of them). Especially Avacyn. I'm biased, she was my favorite creature in Magic, and Innistrad was my favorite plane before they ruined it. You have so many more opportunities for conflict, I literally came up with one the instant we heard we were going back to Innistrad.
"Avacyn is back, and the Angels stand guard over humanity. The Cursemute has quelled a lot of monsters but not all—and not the ones in human skin. What happens when tyrannical factions of the Church of Avacyn and other religious orders go to war with one another? Invoking the names of the very guardians who would shield them from each other, these factions now fight for an Innistrad troubled by the oldest of evils. How can the Angel of Hope and her Angelic Flights oppose the very people they've sworn to protect when madness and a lust for power drive a holy crusade that will end in bloodshed and despair?"
Gives Avacyn and the Flights some in-built conflict, because how can they stand against their wards, and yet how can they let these various factions slay each other in the name of power and greed? Shades of gray, room for good and bad on all sides, and kinda puts the Angels in a spot where they can't just come in and smite everything.
For me, this would have been so much better and more rife with storytelling potential than cosmic "horror"—which, to me, is anything but. The Mythos never did anything for me. "Cool. The universe doesn't care about us, these beings are unknowable and we're like ants to them. Yawn. Why should I care, then? We can't kill them, can't defeat them, can't understand them, what's the point?"
They could have done this so much better, though. The arrival of a new power, like an ancient demon, a god, a planeswalker, something to show up and break the Cursemute but without fridging Avacyn. She had so much potential for storytelling. I keep hoping (and tweeting Wizards) that they'll bring her back somehow, even though I know it's not really gonna happen. But I don't give up easily. Even now I can think of some cool storyline ways to bring her back and still keep Innistrad as a plane rife with potential, but at this point, I have no faith in WOTC to do anything interesting with it.
Cosmic horror + giving Angels Raid Boss Disease + a non-solution to the Eldrazi was probably the most predictably boring thing they could have done with the plane.
My guess is that Bolas will be defeated and "destroyed," and then...stinger ending! A shadow or a distant laugh or something like that hinting that he's not really gone for good, and then if they ever decide to reuse him they can, and if they don't, he's still out there in potentia.
Think Zombie Master might make the cut? With a lot of great Zombies lately, and stuff like Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth, it could be quite dangerous. But I suppose the landwalk bit hurts it, since they've more or less retired that particular thing. Although hey, if we're doing reprints.... I have an Abzan Zombie deck that abuses Song of Freyalise to help speed out lots of Zombies with stuff like Plague Belcher turning sweepers to my advantage, and Zombie Master would find a great home there!
Other than that, I'm hoping for some reprints or new cards that support my dreams of making strong Dinosaur and Angel decks.
The UI is among the worst I've ever encountered and actively harms the experience. The matchmaking is going to drive would-be new players away from the game in droves. As much as I like the idea of building up a collection and playing online with a large userbase, so far Arena just keeps disappointing more and more. I hate being negative about something like this, where I feel there is potential, but this game has some very glaring issues. A lot of this is going to make this game cater only to the hardcore and/or the whales, and I'd like to find a better place to voice my concerns to Wizards. Not that they'll listen, but somewhere we ought to be able to get the word out: the new player experience in this game is extremely poor.
At this point, if I am going to drop significant amounts of money on Magic, it'll be on paper Magic, where I can buy exactly the cards I want and put together good decks, and also have a much better idea what I'm up against.
I checked the videos and a few of the others running similar lists, so I have a better idea now. I may try to put something together along those lines. If I can get past my sheer frustration with this game's terrible UI and matchmaking.
Do you happen to know if there's a deck list anywhere of the stuff she uses? As someone who loves Angels and is wanting to build an Angel deck, I'd like to see how it plays out in Arena if I can build something along those lines.
