Another question, if I activated Penance in response to Yennett, Cryptic Sovereign‘s triggered ability, can I just choose the ability as the “target” and still have my commander do the damage?
I’ve read that Penance can be used even without any source to choose as you choose upon the resolution, but what I’m wondering is the ruling associated with this that allows it to happen? Also to clarify that if there’s at least one choice available that I have to choose one? Looking to use this for a Yennett, Cryptic Sovereign deck to basically put back any and all cards from my hand on top at instant speed. Thanks in advance
The Jade Guardian would indeed die due to SBA for being a 0/0, before it's ETB ability is put on the stack. So the Jade Guardian is dead before the ability goes on the stack, which is long before its ability could even begin to resolve.
Hope that helps.
That's what I was thinking. Won't the jade guardian still be able to put its effect on the stack, since it does enter even though it dies right away?
So the situation is I have an Elesh Norn on the field and the opponent casts jade guardian Wanting to target itself with the +1/+1 counter in order to survive. So would the jade guardian have the counter placed on it before resolving or would SBA remove it before it's able to target itself?
