My friend and I are going to be making our first foray into online Magic tonight. We're kitchen table players who draft together sometimes. We're planning on using a draft simulator and then importing the decks to Untap.in. I'm thinking of drafting on TappedOut, but I know Untap.in also has its own draft simulator. Anyone have opinions on these different sites (or others)? Who has the best bots? I can't seem to find any reviews less than three years old.
What happens if identity thief exiles and copies a face down morph creature? I'm assuming that he copies the face up creature since morph cards moved to other zones are turned face up and the exiling happens before the copying.
Thanks for the response and sharing your experiences. It's helps to know I'm not going down a dead end. I may check out your cube later on. Right now, I'm enjoying the idea of organically figuring out which cards don't ever get played and should thus be cut. That may get tired after a few drafts, though, especially since my friends and I don't get to get together that often.
Thanks, guys, especially Groglord for suggesting ways to figure out what cards to target. We're going to start out just buying Innistrad cards and playing with those. Once we're familiar with them, we'll read up on the other sets. By that time we should have a feel for what kinds of cards we'd like to see added.
My friend and I are about to start assembling a simple, budget Innistrad cube. We will start out buying the cheapest cards we can (in a 3/2/1 common/uncommon/rare ratio, trying to keep even color distribution) and just go from there. We'll use it mostly for two-man sealed or Winston drafting.
But we know nothing about Innistrad, since we were out of the game at the time, so we don't know whether to include Dark Ascension and Avacyn Restored, too. Reddit seems to have only bad things to say about Avacyn Restored and nothing is ever mentioned about Dark Ascension. Would you suggest including Avacyn Restored and/or Dark Ascension in the cube?
So I'm looking to put together a deck using my beloved homarids, specifically my beloved Homarid Spawning Bed: Crab Flood I'm looking for older cards that work well with the Spawning Bed. So far, the best card I've found has been Floodgate. I never realized how great this card is, but I love it in this deck. You feed it to your babies, get four crabs, and kill a bunch of non-blue, non-flying creatures in the process. Can anyone think of other older cards like this, that do something cool when they leave the battlefield?
Other types of creatures I'm thinking work well are ones with abilities that activate when they come into the battlefield (bring them in, get the ability, sac them, get baby crabs), with cumulative upkeep (get a turn or three of the good creature then feed it to the crabs), and with other drawbacks (Deep Spawn, I'm looking at you). Any other ideas? Do walls make sense because they can defend until other pieces are in place, then get fed to the crabs?
Oh, and "older" to me means Stronghold and before, because that's when I originally stopped playing. Though I'm certainly tempted to make an exception for Coat of Arms.
more because of nostalgia rather than on merit imho.
Oooooh, yeah. You better believe I'm going to get a bunch of cheap Ice Age cards at some point and draft with them. I've always loved Ice Age (even if I actually hate most of the cards in the set).
Thanks. The flashy names — pauper and peasant — have been distracting me from my specific goal: to play really, really affordable limited. I don't really care about rarity. I'm just cheap. Did some searching and found that you can get about 250 cards from sets that are no longer in standard (like Khans and Innistrad) before you start breaching the 10 cents/card barrier. (This was on TCG Player. If anyone has a better site, I'm all ears.) That includes some rares, too, and I think that's what I really want.
Thanks, guys. That makes the Hordes less broken, at least.
And just to confirm: If I do leave my Hordes untapped as a blocker, I can always use their ability after my opponent's combat phase even if they don't do anything during their second main phase/end step. (I feel like some people are going to say, "I don't attack. My turn's over." And then, when I want to use the ability, they'll complain that I can't use it and then untap because their turn is over and it's already my turn.)
Question:
If I have a Demonic Hordes, can I destroy my opponent's lands as they are played and before they are tapped? I.e. If I get rid of all their land, can I basically stop them from ever having land again by leaving the Hordes untapped and destroying land every time they play one?
As I look around the internet, I'm kind of surprised this topic doesn't come up. People talk about which sets are best for limited, but no one seems to talk about drafting pauper or peasant limited. Is it that the cubes that people make for pauper and peasant are so much more superior to the confining oneself to one set? I guess I'm surprised there aren't more people who want the flavor of limited, but don't want to pay for the rares and mythics. Or maybe they just don't feel the need to talk about it.
I always got the impression of Kamigawa limited that CCC was good to great, CCB was okay to good, CBS was horrid.
Yeah. This is what I had been reading, though I'm probably looking for reasons to put Kamigawa on the list because I have a pro-Japan bias. (Purplemurasaki may share this bias perhaps?)
For Lorwyn, though, I think I had just read an article or two where the author said something along the lines of "Lots of people don't like Lorwyn, but I like its __________________." Being contrarian myself, that probably piqued my interest. I guess that's in line with what you're saying. And, yeah, that doesn't scream, "Go buy sets so you can draft this."
I'll probably start by buying the uncommons for one of the three sets that came in the original new card lot I purchased — Ixalan, Amonkhet, and Aether Revolt. We'll continue to play them (we've only tried Ixalan so far), figure out the one we like, then purchase the uncommons. The more I read about pauper and peasant, the less I'm sure that having uncommons will improve the draft/playing experience.
After that, I'll go to Innistrad or Khans next (depending on which is cheaper/easier to get). Then, once I know what a great set is like, we'll see.
Thanks!
Thanks again.

Until I get other goals. Thanks, guys.

Alright, I guess I'm just going to have to try it out. I'll update this thread someday if I find one set works better than others. Thanks.
