As someone who played Pyromancer Ascension the entire time it was legal in Standard (even in the face of Blightning/Bloodbraid Elf into Blightning, which was pretty much an auto lose), I suspect I will spend an inordinate amount of time trying to make this work in Izzet Prowess in Standard.

I can't wait to lose to this card when I play it in Limited. Smile

Is a 3/2 with Menace playable?

    Guess we'll find out.

That last jab is a bit of a shot in your own foot, given that Pia and Kiran Nalaar see play in Modern. Wink

I expect that the Investigate mechanic, along with being super flavorful in a Gothic horror setting where mysteries abound, is going to be a great boon in Limited as long as the format is not blisteringly fast. Being able to smooth out your draws over the game will make for some great Magic. Beyond that, any synergy with a subsequent artifact theme would just be gravy.

The return to Zendikar was great because it allowed them to resolve a very important story conflict. I, for one, was more excited for the Eldrazi threat than most because a) ROE didn't finish what it started and b) Eldrazi card names are impossible not to be amused by. Sifter of Skulls? Conduit of Ruin? Most sets don't allow for such ridiculous naming conventions.

Though I am glad that the new Innistrad is still evoking the flavor that made the first two parts of the block so captivating. If there's more cards like Brain in a Jar and the like, we can be sure that we have a winner on our hands. Smile

A small number of tournament quality cards at Mythic, epic feeling or not, keeps the ev of packs up and is good for both Wizards and the consumer. Besides, there is something epic about how far the "It will not die" trait has been pushed on this card.

The big issue with that article is that the writer formulates an opino on what "not just Tournament Playable cards" means that is at odds with the statement.

To me this suggests that tournament playability should not be part of the criteria of "epic-ness.

The intention here is well but poorly construed. The comment that he quotes from Mark Rosewater definitely leaves open the door for some high quality cards being Mythic. It simply intones that the Mythic rarity will never be comprised of only those kind of cards.

Once again, cognitive dissonance at work.

Reminds me a bit of Pearl Lake Ancient, in that it can play the role of a hard to answer control finisher for when the game goes long. Also makes me giggle a bit as a discard outlet for those pesky Deathmist Raptors that get stuck in your hand.

Either way, it serves as both a discard outlet and a game ending beating, at a medium cost, that is hard to interact with. Without a removal spell a la Hero's Downfall in the format, I could see this making some waves.

To be clear: your opinion regarding what was said with regards to the kind of cards that will be Mythic is just that, an opinion, and not factually related to what was actually said. Specifically, Mark Rosewater noted that the Mythic rarity would not just be the most sought after tournament cards. He did not, and has never, said that there would not be tournament quality cards at Mythic.

This cognitive dissonance regarding what you people and what is true is perplexing, given that the explanation I trotted out gets trotted out every time a set is released and someone uses the exact same and perpetually false argument you just made. If you don't believe, go read the article that dissects the nature of the Mythic rarity. The only kind of card that is explicitly stated to never be made Mythic in a typical Magic set is a utility rare, like a cycle of Dual Lands, or something grossly ubiquitous like Mutavault or Thoughtseize.

Seriosuly, it's been almost a decade. This should not need explaining each time around.

Indeed. Alara Block has plenty of cards in that fashion. There are reasons for a card to be X colours beyond mechanical ones.

This implementation is elegant enough that it bypasses the bigger hurdles that Nwo places on mechanics like suspend. Nice work.

I agree. If that was intended they would have made Wastes have a type. I feel like the intent behind it being a basic land was to circumvent the "4 of a card" rule.

These cards suffer from Stoneforge Mystic complex. That is, they are at once tutors and enablers. If you want a good point of comparison for the sort of hoops you should have to jump through for this sort of effect, look at Polymorph's associated costs. The comparison of Mystic Plunder to Academy Rector is also very apt, and Academy Rector is an obscenely powerful card. These needs a serious rework.
