Time will tell how effective these modular cards will be. Like mentioned above, if they go too far with them, they could break formats like companion did, so I appreciate the caution.

Is it possible we have a mirror of what happened post-mirrodin? After the power level of Eldraine, Theros 2.0 and some other sets last year, is Wizard's dialing it back to Kamigawa levels of card power?

I appreciate the ebb and flow of the game. I just hope MDFC's don't become a regular feature and turn the game into something else like pokemon. I have always hated DFC's and still don't play with any. I hope I can keep it that way.

So I'm really perplexed at what you mean by turning the game into pokemon. There are no double-faced cards in pokemon... And there are not very many comparisons mechanically between the two games as they have a very different engine from each other. Your statement comes off like football players worrying that the game is going to turn into basketball. The only benefit of a doubt I can glean from this is that most competitive pokemon decks I've seen use very little energy cards and utilize filtering effects to attach their energy which to an effect these modal lands cards I guess do something similar.

I was pretty sure that partner had to be involved I don’t know how else they could have even had a commander draft set without it. I’m happy for it’s return as well. I know some people may think the baron is a little janky but I think the life gain Part can have some interesting applications. If you have Vito out you could possibly create some interesting situations where you can take out the table pretty quickly. I also think you can team him up with Reihan for some aristocratic goodness.

Starting with a formatting note, you'll want the activated ability and the commander rule together so they'll be in the same "slot" of the planeswalker like how Rowan Kenrith is formatted. That's the only example of a planeswalker with 3 loyalty abilities and 2 non-loyalty texts.

You should switch the +1 and -1 abilities. Having the fight generate food means you are constantly able to feed his sacrifice ability for extra activations, which is about the strongest thing a planeswalker can do, so adding loyalty as well will quickly get out of hand.

The second ability just needs to be rephrased: Target creature and Oko and His Dog each become a 3/3 green Elk Creatures until the beginning of your next turn.

The third ability is very weak except in a dedicated Food deck where its ridiculously strong. If they don't have a planeswalker, its kind of a dud, so I'd make it grab any permanent.

Lastly, for commanders they try to design them so you cannot easily kill and recast the planeswalker by ultimating it after plussing a bunch. If you make the plus ability a +2 and the minus a -2, and start his loyalty at 2 or 4, you'll solve this.

I agree with your suggestions I'm just not sure where the can be your commander should be placed. Every can be your commander has it at the bottom, but all of the planeswalkers since War of the Spark that have a non loyalty ability have it at the top. Do you think the extra mode with the ultimate would make it fun to go ham with food in commander?

So I was playing against the robot in Arena and for giggles I played a deck that had Oko thief of Crowns in it and I'm one of the few who actually misses him lol. So I've been thinking about what an Oko made for commander would look like. I wanted to pair him up with Garruk like he is at the beginning of the Eldraine story. Garruk has had a lot of Garruk Tribal support with Garruk, Cursed Huntsman and Garruk's Harbinger so I wanted to give an ability that would help with the planeswalker tribal support and I think having an ability that allows them to use their abilities at instant speed will help make them viable in commander as well. And they are a food commander lol it's just all of the things. It's just a sketch so any suggestions are welcome.

    Oko and His Dog2UGB
    Legendary Planeswalker - Oko Garruk
+2: Up to one target creature and Oko and His Dog each become a 3/3 green Elk Creature until the beginning of your next turn.
-2: Up to one target creature you control fights a creature you don't control. If at least one of those creatures die this turn create a food token.
-5: Gain control of target permanent. You may sacrifice 5 food tokens if you do you control target player during their next turn.
Sacrifice a food token: Until end of turn target Oko or Garruk planeswalker can activate loyalty abilities any time you can cast an instant.
Oko and his Dog can be your commander.
    Loyalty 4

    Edit: Made tweaks with rowanalpha
Edit: Changed +2 so it would still work on an empty board.

So I've been thinking lately that they might try to branch ally to include other classes in their support. I'm thinking they may double down on D&D classes like Rogue and Warlock. I've found it odd that Robber of the Reach just cared if a Rogue attacked not necessarily itself and both Rogues and Warlocks are featured in Jumpstart. I think the main feature will still be Allies but I could see it being somewhat of a branched thing like it would care about whether an Ally or Rogue enters the battlefield. I know Jumpstart has tribal support for a lot of different types but I think a world inspired by D&D could feature some support from classic D&D classes. I could see tribal themes for Wizards, Clerics, Rogues, Clerics, and Druids and maybe Mardu Knights can get a boon in this set.

I do agree with this but one reminder

There's automatically elemental tribal in zendikar because a few reasons

    the roil
    the landfall cards
    Nisaa
The cards that turn lands into creatures permanently or ”till end of turn” which makes them elementals
finally omnath will automatically be here with the 4th or/and 5th color probably one of the commander decks

Yeah I definitely see landfall and land matters being a thing. One thing that could be a cross over with that is the druid class could be tied to elemental tribal or could be a part of the new Awaken like mechanic. I think that if it's anything like I'm thinking it's mostly going to be a riff on Ally that will help support specific tribes as well if that makes sense.

Sorin and Nahiri rivalry reaches its climax, requiring intervention by Nissa due to the threat that the conflict represents for Zendikar's Recovery.
Nissa perhaps even promises to find a solution for Emrakul's presence on Innistrad.

I don't know I think if Nahiri is seen back on Zendikar I think she would have to have somewhat of a change of heart (and this is coming from someone who is completely on team Sorin). Her motivation in the rivalry is based on the stat of Zendikar when she last saw it, I think while she may want revenge on Sorin I'd hope that if she went to Zendikar she'd want to rebuild her homeland and I might be wearing rose colored glasses but I don't see Sorin retaliating on Zendikar itself though I can see him trying to hunt her specifically down. Even not being her biggest fan I hope they develop her as an anti-hero or anti-villain instead of oh we need to check off the box for white aligned villain.

There isn’t anything wrong with Mowu, Calix, Karn or an angel planeswalker. There can be exceptions to rules in extraordinary circumstances. It’s a multiverse of magic. The lack of angel support and barely any male angels bothers me.

Mowu and Calix don't really bug me either, but I know it really bugged some people. I actually have an unpopular opinion that Calix should have been previewed in Commander 2018 instead of Estrid Laugh . Hopefully, they find some world for more angel tribal and more male angels.

The If/When theme on Maro's Blogatog site on April 26th might give some insight as to what we might expect. Highly speculatory I know and it's only his opinion on if or when we can expect certain things in the future but since this thread is already speculatory I might as well send a link.

I'm excited that Davriel is a "big when".

Reading that and seeing angel planeswalkers as a likelihood really does confirm that they don't give a **** about the lore anymore, then again given the artificial being that became a walker in the new Theros that was basically already confirmed.

    *sigh*

While I'm not a big lore person I've found it crazy we haven't really had an angel planeswalker or really any tribal support for angels. Even Avacyn Restored which was supposed to be Angelpoluza only had 13 angels compared to Dragon's of Tarkir which had 26 dragons(a bit off topic). I do remember that the Bant angels were kind of like reincarnations of heroes and even though they weren't shown there are possibilities of male angels as well with cards like Paragon of the Amesha. So I think an Angel planeswalker from Bant wouldn't necessarily be that big of a stretch. And even before the Mowu and Calix controversy(?) we had the likes of Karn, Ob Nixilis, and Tibalt so I think that an Angel planeswalker should be a big when.

Eldraine would actually be like a 1000x better. Or even a Homelands one.

eldraine is already like every dnd setting ever that doesn't take place in a city.

i really like the idea of a campaign on theros. the whole gods being present thing can lead to a lot of fun shenanigans, so can escaping from the underworld or heading off into nyx.

i would actually play dnd again if they ever released supplements for campaigns on ulgrotha or sarpadia. no hesitation.

I think they should have at least given us a planeshift, something like for Dominaria for Eldraine which was another easy adaption to DND.

Putting aside the presumption here that your assertions are correct, is Thalia not an example of a strong female character?

Not to be a troll but I've never understood why people care about her as a character. In original Innistrad she could have been replaced with any Sue, John, or Nancy and in Shadows she just killed angels which didn't really solve the problem at hand. In both cases planeswalkers were the real driving force of the plot. She reminds me of Indiana Jones in Raiders sure she does some stuff but the plot moves with or without her in the picture.
If you don't care about the people living on the plane then this is correct. Otherwise, it's so far off that I question whether you've read the story for Shadows.

Thalia was the beacon of hope for the world that was going mad. She roamed the plains telling everyone that the protection and threat of Avacyn were gone and gave them a method of fighting back against the encroaching darkness. Certainly, the plot went just fine elsewhere but the plane and its people were focused on Thalia.

Maybe to a point, I've stopped caring for the humans and the remaining forces of good on Innistrad. I find it hard to accept that a society that was having troubles facing vampires suddenly got good and could take on Angels that they needed to protect them from said vampires. So basically your saying we should show accolades for a meh character who gives hope to a group of even more meh characters. Their entire plot b storyline was based around killing angels who were just as much victims in Shadows as the humans because their actions were not entirely their own. The entirety of the shadows story had two goals to put a pin in the eldrazi story and make innistrad scary again and in my opinion, it made the forces of good seem vastly stupid.
If your going to sum up the entire B plot and humans killing Angel's then you have completely misunderstood the B plot and should give it another read. The B plot was about uniting the denizens of Innistrad against Emrakul which is why the climactic avengers style fight had all 5 forces present. Vmpires, werewolfs, Zombies, Spirits and Humans. Thalia was the one who united Human and Spirit which is why she is so important. If you see the entire populace of Innistraf and Meh then you can't reasonably discuss their importance.

Well I guess we will have to agree to disagree lol. I'm just saying I'm not a big fan of the humans of Innistrad or really a whole lot of what happened in Shadows in general. And I think I can discuss their lack of importance as them being meh is directly tied to it, but you're entitled to your opinion.
