We're getting anime cards again? What does Ravnica have to do with anime?

I know I’m going to get roasted for this but my question is what does old border have to do with ravnica?

Can't this turn all of your creatures with +1/+1 counters on them into Grists if so I think this card is bonkers.

Why are we entertaining intentional leak theories again? Are the tinfoil hats getting oil in them again? If Wizards wanted to truly manufacture hype with minimal damage to their spoiler plan they'd drop that last meld pair first to piss off the green-too-good brigade. A bunch of draft chaff is nothing.

Exactly what a GotC plant would say. Is the pay good?

It is getting people to talk about these instead of their 30th anniversary proxies for whales debacle. It seems to be succeeding. Seems to happen that way when they get a lot of negative feedback on an upcoming product they introduce.

Also a sneaky way of getting feedback on the Phyrexian foils as well.

    Prove us wrong.

I'm not saying that wotc is beyond intentional leaks I just don't know if this is one. Phyrexia fans are probably going to eat well the next three sets wouldn't it make more sense for them to leak more Brother's War which is coming out in about a month versus a set that doesn't come out until like January? I mean they may want to distract us from the backlash but at the same time they will want our money it just makes more sense that they'd tease a recent set for us to put our money into versus a set down the road.

posted a message on OMG! Wild West Set may be coming SOON!!!
Lastly: Could we see this set as early as next year in Q3 as "Lacrosse" or Q4 as "Offroading"?

I don't think so for Lacrosse. Lacrose is a part of the Phyrexia 4 set story narrative. I could be wrong but I think it's more likely that the two sets following Brother's War are going to be on New Phyrexia. The part that kinda confuses me is that Marathon is getting an epilogue set. I have a theory that the epilogue will be called Mirrodin Pure. I don't know if they are going to introduce a new plane amongst this storyline I think it'd make it worse for people who want the wild west set to be in the middle of a big storyline. Imagine them introducing Eldraine in between Ravnica Alliance and War of the Spark it would have taken steam out of both the hype of Eldraine and War of the Spark. So TLDR I don't think they'd introduce this plane until after the Phyrexia war.

secondly New phyrexia pretty much the entire set got leaked
Yeah, and that was long before Ixalan.

Don;t forget too that I think Judgment was leaked due to ppl able to see the coding in MTGO before it was released. Either Judgment or Scourge, one of those two.

    Also:

    TLDR

Did they explain how backgrounds and choosing one works?

    'buster

That’s what I want to know as well! I’m guessing that if your commander has the choose a background that it begins the game in the command zone, but can they also be in the 99 of regular decks. I’m assuming so cuz nothing about the templating would prevent it. I’m already sold on buying a box of this. I loved AFR and I think this looks awesome so far. I’m hoping that there will be some of the initiative mechanic in mono white because I have a nadaar blink deck that goes through dungeons pretty fast. I’m surprised no one is talking much about Gale. I think his ability to recure spells from the graveyard is pretty strong and I think with all the new adventures there’s some shinanagins he can pull off with them.

Edit: I don’t think Gale plays with adventures the same way as Lier does it looks like that’s an exclusive for him. Gale has a lot of potential though.

Number # 3 is Nephilim right? [...] it fits with the theme?

I don't know about that... Historically four-color creatures in a Commander set (with strict color identity rules) based on a plane focused on three-color combinations doesn't sound like a great fit to me. Unless they get rid of the four-colorness that's the Nephilim's USP (which I hope they'd be smart enough not to do, but then again, I wouldn't put anything past someone who's capable of thinking asymmetrical Slivers are a good idea).

They could be the set booster commander cards like Yoshimaru, Ever Faithful and Lynde, Cheerful Tormentor. In the bible and pop culture they have also been seen as a fallen angel like creature they could be Angel Nephalim and could be a mix of what we saw in Ravnica and an Angel. "True biblical angels" are kinda a thing on youtube if you follow spooky stuff lol these could be a nod to that too. I think they can also play with set theme and be four color like there could be one costed RGWBand play with mechanics from both the Riviteers and the Caberetti.

Well I for one am fine with the recycling/recurring villains theme. The Phyrexians lost, sure but they came back. Bolas lost, sure, but rest assured he'll pop back as soon as Ugin is eventually killed.

Firstly, recurring villains is an important theme in long-running stories. They ground the power of 'evil' in their respective world, and how it cannot be entirely uprooted. The Praetors are a natural successor to Yawgmoth, just like how Sauron was but one to Morgoth. It extends continuity, and prolongs storytelling around branded and franchise-iconic enemies. In this case, Yawgmoth was defeated; Phyrexia was not. Just like how Morgoth was defeated; his servants, not as much.

Second, if they didn't use this trope, they would eventually run out of good villain ideas. Most possible villain tropes are already over-used and chewed up and spat out at us, and if WotC kept exploring new villain ideas we'd eventually (and pretty soon at that) gripe at the other end, of 'this one is just a rip-off of X, and not as good or compelling as Y'.

Third, a story regarding a Multiverse must have multiverse-impacting villains, so each plane having its own standalone story is not really what magic is about. Plots intertwine and worlds collide, at the whims of the same eternal powers that have been there since the dawn of time. The story is good; the storytelling is... probably severely underpaid.

Fourth, and I do not mean to get political, but this is just a real-life, fact-based parallelism. Look at the real world. The Nazis were defeated, after scarring history, the land, and the human race. Still, less than a century later, fascism is on a global rise. History is bound to repeat itself.

Fifth, as far as what characters get the axe first, drama and George Martin recommend starting with the innocent and impactful ones. With how WotC have made us sick of most characters, or how soon it is for some, they didn't have much choice. I like Tamiyo. I like Phyrexia. I don't like what they did to her but story-wise it is a rational next step. Should it overshadow other plotlines and storylines of favorite planes and worlds? I say that is an invasive species' most inherent trait (also that no one likes it when it happens).

Sorry for the rant! I'm grateful to see so many people well-versed in storytelling and worldbuilding! Cheers!

Ok to go with your Melkor/Sauron example (which I love it means you are a person of culture). Tolkein actually played with the idea of writing a story about a cult worshipping Sauron invading Gondor from the inside but decided to not write it because he found it "not worth doing". I think why Melkor and Sauron work is because one is an antagonist to the Valar and the free peoples and the other is an antagonist to Middle Earth.

And as for the GRR Martin quote I think it's a reason I don't go for his books. As far as innocence goes anyway. I've never read or watched the tv show but I know enough of the plot that it's not one I would care for.

There are other tropes they can explore though besides Phyrexia. They could have Ob Nixilis be a threat but my guess is he will be a crime lord get beat up by Elspeth and then join phyrexia.

On the one hand, another story arc with a new big bad is kind of neat. On the other, I hate the "oh, this character you loved? They're brainwashed and evil now" thing. I honestly would've preferred Tamiyo to die. WotC's anti-human bias also continues to show - why not have one of the random human planeswalkers suffer this fate, I'm sure we have over a dozen of them at this point.

The boring part about an established character (human or not) becoming compleated is that it basically removes all nuance from them. Once they're Phyrexian, they are nothing more than a "doing evil things for the sake of being evil" type of caricature.

I totally agree with you. It just is a slap in the face on so many levels. First and foremost Tamiyo is the planeswalker who could so easily be the Saga matters planeswalker. And not only that she is a pacifist. I just want to be done with this story so bad wake me up in three years I guess lol.
