The problem with Modern is the card pool doesnt have what it takes to combat fast combo. There is no force of will type card that can just say 'no!'. That leaves combo the boogyman of the format. Its been said Legacy would be the same (combo boogyman syndrom) if force was not in the format. All your post is saying is you like broken over powered magic. Thats fine, Legacy and Vintage are there for you. Why want another format to be that way? There is still combo decks that can be played in Modern, they just cant go off before turn 3 reliably. Control is still playable (contrary to what everyone is saying) its going to take some world class pro to build a competitive control deck before anyone even tries it tho. Because magic players are lazy. Yes, aggro seems to be the king right now, but thats only because people tend to feel comfort in what has worked before. Instead, they should get out of their comfort zone and get out there and build and test. Thats the only way the format will grow.

I don't understand your insistence that once players "build and test" they will find powerful new decks and strategies that beat zoo. All of the cards in Modern are available in Legacy and in Legacy, Zoo (in an almost identical form to what will be Modern-legal) exists as a playable deck. I am not saying that "zoo will be the only deck" as many are but we all should be able to see that aggro will be an incredibly powerful archetype and the diversity of a format is hindered because wizards decided to ban most/all of the decent combos. These combos were not even banned when they were extended legal and I can't see any reason for most of their bannings other than, "wizards has decreed you may not play combo decks".

I for one am very happy for a slower eternal format that is somewhat balanced and diverse. With out the bannings, it would be a format full of combo and a small player base of those that enjoy that type of format. This way more newer players can enjoy an eternal format. Thats the goal of Wotc, expanding the player base.

Modern will probably be slower than Legacy, I agree with that.

Why would you say it is "somewhat balanced and diverse" though? Do you not think Legacy is balanced or diverse? There are a TON of decks that are very competitive in Legacy and decks from every archetype are viable and compete at the same level. I'd say Legacy is probably the most diverse format that exists right now based on the amount of different decks that are competitive.

I really do not want to come off as attacking you but I have to say, it seems like you strongly dislike combo decks and enjoy creature decks. There's nothing wrong with that and I also enjoy creature decks but this game can handle many different deck types in one format. The existence of valakut or dread return would not suddenly make creature-based aggressive decks second tier or unplayable.

Sorry to bring up Zoo again but I feel that it is an extremely strong argument: In Legacy, Dredge and Zoo compete and both exist and playable decks. In Modern (if Grave Troll and Dread Return were not banned), Dread would exist in a neutered and different form that, while creative and not weak, would still be competing with a Zoo deck of very very nearly the same power level as Legacy Zoo.

What do you think the chances are that the Modern Dredge brew is secretly stronger than the Legacy Dredge that has proven its strength and exists in a format where every card legal in Modern is legal?
