Feb 9, 2008Golbez posted a message on What You Should Be Trading For...An Update To LOR Block PricesReveillark is such a useful card that it is understandable why it's going up in value. Right now, many (at least in my area) don't like WHITE, so they don't really look at the card as a bomb. Perhaps PROJECT R will change some minds, or people will go back to UW Blink (woot)Posted in: daivos Blog
Prowler is surprisingly effective as a beater, and enables so many graveyard recursion options.
I wonder if Tormod's Crypt will see a spike in value as Project R may become popular and other recursion strategies are used.
Mind Shatter - I'm hoping to offload the 2 that I have. It seems much more efficient to play Stupor, or Noggin Whack, rather than Shatter.
Anyway, thanks for the update. Always interesting to see the market trends. -

Interesting to see the PAckmaster go up. The new kinship wolfy guy will certainly help elves put out a lot of deadly wolves -

I don't think splitting at a pre-release is too much of a
BS move. Hell, we did 4 rounds and that was looooooooooooooooooooooon. I can't imagine doing 5. -
Jan 27, 2008Golbez posted a message on Confessions of a ReN00b: First FNM VictoryIt's mono-red storm, pretty much similar to Chapin's build. The sideboard is a little different, given the metagamePosted in: Golbez Blog
I know it's total netdeck, but it was very easy to build with the cards I already had. I basically just need to get the Spinerock Knolls, Wheel of Fate (sideboard) and Sulfurous Blast. My g/f plays her own homebrew black/red Dragonstorm (Dark Rituals, etc), so I figured I'd built the standard version for us to play.
I'd have to say it's a lot more fun to play, but it is boom/bust and I feel nervous. I went 2-1 in my first go-around
1. Won 2-0 vs mirror match. Phew...
2. Won 2-0 vs. Sonic Boom. I was surprised I won this matchup, but I don't think he knew how to handle the matchup...and his counters just added to my storm count for grapeshot.
3. Lost 2-0 to R/G Zoo/Ramp. The guy expected me to kick his ass, but he walloped me...plus a bonus game..so 0-3
Game 1..miscounted...had 8 mana i/o of 9..doh!! :mad::o
Game 2 ... he used Radha to unmorph red Akroma!! Gah... I shoulda shocked the damn thing when I had a chance
Dragonstorm requires you to know which hands to start with... Mulliganing well is my weak point, so I need to keep goldfishing.
Anyway, enough rambling I know some use green or blue in their builds, but I feel like the mono-red does the job effectively and can quickly deal with most threats. Only blue-control decks scare me. - To post a comment, please login or register a new account.
But there seems to be very few cards that say target player puts a basic land into play. Rampant Growth, Cultivate, Pilgrim's Eye, Sakura Tribe Elder, et al, all only allow the caster to do so. Why is this not explored? I have only really seen Fertilid do this.
There are a FEW that allow all players to put lands into play, but almost none targeted. Would it kill them to have a Rampant Growth that said target player searches....? Or would this be broken in multiplayer somehow?
Watchwolf.
Wandering Wolf + Wolfir Silverheart is BRUTAL If using white, Behemoth Sledge works well too.
I used the flip planeswalker Garruk because he makes wolf tokens on one side, deathtouch wolf tokesn on the other.
Wolfbriar Elemental can crank out the tokens.
And tokens beg for Overrun.
There was a reddit thread where the CEO of the promotion company chimed in, as well as one of the 100 or so people who did attend.

The finals was won by BG Devotion over UW Heroic.
That said, Standard FNM always felt 'casually competitive', for lack of a better term.
A vast majority of players, especially as the card pool shrank, simply net-decked. I saw fewer and fewer home brews, and it became the typical rock-paper-scissors format we've been used to for so many years (although I am glad the current Standard has variety).
FNM was casual in that the players, for the most part, were not cut-throat and were just there to have a good time. It wasn't casual in the sheer amount of power that you were likely to face. My wife and I loved to brew, but found it hard to win in the face of finely tuned netdecks.
If you want a more casual FNM experience, find one that does drafts... At least you don't have the pressure to "Keep up with the Joneses".
Those didn't didn't fit into my Top 20
Gavony Township - My #21. Turns an army into a force
Vault of the Archangel - Seems boom or bust for me
Bazaar of Baghdad - No experience with this
Cloudpost - Maybe my #22…I know how powerful they can be
Kor Haven - So bloody annoying to play against!
Rogue's Passage - A great way to get through some big monsters
1. Some decks mulligan aggressively. Dredge decks, for example, can mulligan down to 2 and still win a game. Imagine being in a Legacy tournament and facing 2-3 dredge decks that all decided to mulligan a lot that day. You did nothing wrong, but your record could look bad.
2. Some players mulligan more aggressively than others.
3. Some people actually are a bit un/lucky
4. The logistics of tracking. It is already quite a chore for the judge to have to put in the data from 100s of matches. Imagine having to enter in additional information? Neither the software or the personnel can handle that much load.
In the end, vigilance is still the best weapon.
I wonder if this will lead to any rule changes regarding shuffling/cutting. IF this type of cheat becomes widespread, it wouldn't surprise me to see a rules tweak or two.
Riiiiiiiiiiiiight
(Or, as noted above, he got faked out)
If so, that would be great news.
This isn't a one-time cheat, but a very deliberate, practiced method of cheating multiple opponents over multiple events.
I am not for lifetime bans, but a very long ban is probably the best solution. When somebody makes a conscious effort to cheat and ruin the intregity of the game, it is obvious that they have no respect for good gamesmanship. From his FB post, it is obvious, like Bertoncheaty, that he lacks empathy and remorse for his actions.
A few honourable mentions of my own
Every once in awhile, I give them all to my teacher friend. He has his kids (Grade 2 or 3, I think) use them for arts and crafts!!! They build castles, crowns, and all sorts of cool things out of them.
