and the fun my friend has with his mono green hydra deck, I figured I'd try out a fun version in simic colors!
I know red may add a lot, but I'm more of a blue player myself, and I feel like simic would be a cool take on a cool tribe. It gives something that is hard to come by: fuel to keep playing. Green may have better card draw than say, red or white, but blue gives more than almost any other color (maybe losing to black but ignore that).
Now the only thing I need to START this deck is a commander, and simic offers a few really cool ones in my opinion.
Kruphix, God of Horizons:
A really cool card that allows us to stack up mana for the following turns to make a huge hydra. Has the benefits of being indestructible, and very hard to remove. A solid choice.
Vorel of the Hull Clade:
Doubling my hydras' power and toughness seems cool. Not to mention he's cheap to get out, being only 3 mana!
Well it's a fun way to play the game, using life as another resource. Some decks like Selenia Dark Angel use it and swap life totals, but that's a little cheesy for me.
Razaketh is really cool looking. I'll have to keep him in mind.
I've been brewing a lot of Orzhov and Mardu lists to make a suicide deck but have decided I wanna stick to mono black for tons of mana to actually use my self inflicting dmg effects.
Now I can't figure out a commander, but here are 3 I've been looking into:
Pros:
Hard to remove
Spamable ability + CA
Easy to turn on Devotion wise
Prevents others from gaining life
Cons:
A lot of people use this deck at my LGS, well not suicide black but Erebos decks, and I prefer to usually not copy commanders
Turning into a creature could make him more susceptible to removal
Temptation of turning into mono-black goodstuff.
Chainer, Dementia Master
Pros:
Easy reanimation that self inflicts dmg
Gives abit of an anthem to whatever we reanimate
Is a cool looking old card
Cons:
5 mana is a bit high, and he's easily killed
3 black might be hard to make in some cases
Pros:
Unused commander so A, its original which I like and B people will leave me alone
Consistent card draw when killing things
Selfinflicting dmg is easy with him
Cons:
Is unused for a reason
6 mana is a lot for first cast, and he's easy to kill.
Any thoughts? I'm open to other commanders as well in mono black if you suggest them!
So I'm currently in a conundrum. I just watched LRR's Friday Nights and saw how Alex used Squee, The Immortal and Siege-Gang Commander. It looked like a really fun synergy, and I would love to use it in a deck. Only question is; what commander uses it well? I was thinking mono-red with maybe Squee himself at the helm, but I feel like the best thing to do would expand colors to maybe get more card draw or tutors. Any thoughts?
This is a smaller side note, but I would also like to make a deck that's rotation proof. That's a lesser priority but if that could be accomplished by not suggesting any HOD and before commanders that would be appreciated!
Currently with the new spoiling of the card

Prime Speaker Zegana:
Drawing cards equal to our biggest hydra sounds fun.
Tatyova, Benthic Druid:
A bit of an oddball for this strategy, she offers us CA and some lifegain for doing what we already want to: ramp!
