wtwlf123 posted a message on [[SCD]] City of TraitorsI prefer Ancient Tomb if you only have room for one of the two effects, but it's still a powerful land if you're looking for more ways to drop early 4-drops. In the era of powerful 3-5mv initiative and monarch cards, I think there's more justification for City now than there has been in the past.Posted in: Cube Card and Archetype Discussion -

steve_man posted a message on Sphinx of the Steel WindI've found that Sphinx of the Steel Wind has appreciated a good amount over time because it's such a great trump card to so many of the best cards / strategies while its weaknesses have relatively stayed the same for the most part.Posted in: Cube Card and Archetype Discussion
- Sphinx absolutely dunks on all the best planeswalkers: it's immune to Oko / Grist / Dack / Daretti, gets around The Wandering Emperor with vigilance, and is one of the last things Minsc & Boo wants to go up against. Most planeswalkers really can't do anything to Sphinx at all sans things like JTMS / Gideon of the Trials / Liliana of the Veil / Elspeth, Sun's Champion.
- Plays the monarch / initiative game extremely well since its combination of flying, lifelink, and vigilance makes it the best creature alongside Atraxa that can play offense and defense at the same time without going wide. Lifelink is key when stabilizing against initiative, especially if you've lost a lot of life to forge + trap.
- Since cheaty face has gotten a lot better, Sphinx can beat / race most cheaty face hits (many which are green). Assuming Atraxa can't dig for an answer, Sphinx stonewalls Atraxa while being able to attack right through it.

Alan Yuan posted a message on [MH3][CUBE] Flare of CultivationI don't think this will be a very good card (Cube OR Constructed), but I wouldn't be surprised if someone breaks this with Veteran Explorer in Legacy. However, I'm not a green expert so I cannot comment that much.Posted in: Cube New Card Discussion
In terms of cube, my experience is that Cultivate is one of those cards that has been crept out by power creep, but its also a type of effect you want in some capacity. I've found the deck thining + ramp is fairly important for Time Spiral decks.
If this was straight up a better Cultivate, I think the flexibility MIGHT make it a bit better, but I just don't really see how this adds any flexibility OR does anything broken. -

wtwlf123 posted a message on [MKM][CUBE] Forensic GadgeteerYes, it works with Terrarion to make +1 mana, since it reduces the activation cost from 2 to 1 .Posted in: Cube Card and Archetype Discussion
It doesn't work to make +2 mana with Signets however, because it can't reduce the activation cost below the base 1 . -

Alan Yuan posted a message on [SOI][CUBE] The Gitrog MonsterPosted in: Cube Card and Archetype DiscussionQuote from Resarox »Unfortunately I also agree here. It's not a bad card, but there is so much you can do that is more streamlined, even for a dedicated Lands-shell.
How do people feel about the Fusion with Thalia, Thalia and the Gitrog Monster?
I think its a good card, but tri-color can be tough. -

Resarox posted a message on [[MCD]] Sphere of Resistance/Helm of AwakeningPosted in: Cube Card and Archetype DiscussionQuote from steve_man »
Thorn of Amethyst / Thalia can at least be built around the drawback. Thalia / Lodestone Golem being threats themselves are huge. Smokestack / Tangle Wire impact your opponent more. Armageddon can be built up to and just win the game when it resolves. Sphere of Resistance having NONE of these benefits while being completely symmetrical doesn't make it an attractive option for me.
I'm not claiming that Sphere of Resistance is a 360 Powered Staple, but I do think your analysis is missing the point I was making.
The symmetry of a symmetric effect is broken in deckbuilding. This is easier for Thorn/Thalia/Lodestone, but applies equally for Sphere.
With curves getting lower and decks getting leaner, the number of spells cast/resolved goes up, making the tax of Sphere more impactful. If you manage to build a Deck with higher quality per card than your opponent, the tax will be less meaningful for you. On top of that, using activated abilities can break the symmetry further, see the new cycle of manlands.
In the same way as a state can be built for Armageddon, one can be built for Sphere. For a lot less mana even and quite a bit earlier. Armageddon was King when games were more reactive, but building up a sufficient advantage and having 4 mana spare for Armageddon has gotten harder and harder. Sphere delays less than Armageddon, but costs way less and manages to get you over the finish line just the same. -

steve_man posted a message on [BFZ][CUBE] Bring to LightA Bant Fastbond Draw 7 Natural Order Combo deck recently 3-0'd that played Bring to Light solely as a way to assemble its combo pieces which I thought was interesting. It was mostly used to assemble Hullbreacher / Day's Undoing, but it could also find Ramunap Excavator / Courser of Kruphix to pair with Fastbond, Cemetery Prowler against reanimator, or just grab Questing Beast / Natural Order (with Mox Diamond / Lotus Cobra providing the 4th color).Posted in: Cube Card and Archetype Discussion
The draw 7 / Fastbond aspect is what's the most appealing to me since Fastbond is a card I've been trying to push lately. Draw 7s pair naturally with Fastbond, and Bring to Light can essentially function as a Time Reversal in these types of shells, while being able to grab other things. Most of the time I see Bring to Light relegated as "go fetch Chaos Defiler / Fractured Identity" in a 4-5 color deck, so it's very interesting to me to see a different application in only a 3 color deck.

LucidVision posted a message on [CUBE][WOE] Mosswood DreadknightThis card has been in both alphafrog vintage cube and MTGO vintage cube this season.Posted in: Cube Card and Archetype Discussion
I've been consistently underwhelmed by it in those cubes.
It's a fine playable in an agressive green/black deck, but those decks are uncommon,
it's a middling card in the deck it's best in, and it's unplayable in anything but an agressive deck.
The value generation is too slow and conditional for the mana you have to spend.
Unless your cube is very agressive, supporting both black and green low to the ground agro, I would steer clear of this card.
There was some hype, but I predict it'll fade entirely out of cubes in the next couple years. -

Resarox posted a message on [[MCD]] Sphere of Resistance/Helm of AwakeningI want to revitalise discussion around Sphere of Resistance after having had massive success in two drafts with it. The sequencing problems this card creates, especially with curves getting generally lower and double-spelling getting more and more important, has been backbreaking for the opponents deck. I feel this card got a lot better over the years, essentially being the very cheap alternative to cards like Armageddon and an extension of the package provided by Winter Orb, Tangle Wire, Lodestone Golem, Thalia, Guardian of Thraben and maybe Elite Spellbinder and Anointed Peacekeeper. Blowing up all lands is unnecessary, when all you need is to make your opponents hand functionally useless.Posted in: Cube Card and Archetype Discussion
After having had less and less success with Smokestack and Braids, Cabal Minion, I was on the lookout for something that would give a denial-deck more power, and Sphere definitely lived up to that! I'll be adding Thorn of Amethyst as well to see whether that effect is good enough without the 2/1 First Strike attached.
I've yet to copy Sphere with Mycosynth Gardens, but am definitely looking forward to the day it happens! - To post a comment, please login or register a new account.

Cosima was pretty good for us too, the game I saw I think it came down a turn early and drew 3 cards when it came back? Share the concerns about it being kinda slow and clunky.
Battle Mammoth was very solid in the GW midrange deck I saw it in - drawing a card off an opponent's Primus trigger.
I really want Vorinclex to get there, it hasn't happened much yet (one player did get to immediately ultimate a Nissa WStW which was fun, but otherwise it just ate removal where both Primeval Titan and Carnage Tyrant would have been better. Going to keep hoping though cause it's a wacky card.
I'm still very skeptical of the reliability of Masked Vandal, but if it ends up being good, would love to play it!

My group has been drafting every other week so we've had a similar number of drafts and reviews have been positive. I haven't played the rogue or the threaten one yet, but your report inspires me to give them a try.
I haven't gotten to cast the white bolt land yet, but I did get to cast the green one several times in a mono G ramp deck, and it has been great.
