    I’m kind of surprised about the Escape to the wilds ban, but I can see their point in that it acted as a bridge between cobra and Ugin. Honestly after the last two years I get the feeling like WOTC is trying desperately to end the dominance of ramp decks in standard and that Omnath, Locus of Creation might have been intended for Commander so it didn’t get much testing in the Future Future League and they ended up being blindsided that it was playable outside of EDH.

    I like how it makes golos, tireless pilgrim activations painful, comboing with Bolas’s Citadel becomes positively lethal and cards that use only Phyrexian mana become much less free feeling. Looks fairly useful for burn decks in eternal formats depending on the meta, though it seems like it was meant to be a counter to fires of invention in standard which has already been banned.

    I wonder if white weenie in standard wants 3 or 4 of these?

    If you’re the aggro deck a bolt or two to the face doesn’t matter much and these mean you can basically play four less lands in your deck. Sure these will just be worse plains 90% of the time, but when you flood in 1 in every 10 games or so, this card means that four of your lands aren’t dead draws. Also casting it allows you to swing in without being afraid of blockers and it gives you two 4/4s to help defend. Then your opponent faces a hard decision, do they let you untap with two 4/4 fliers or do they try to survive another turn and save their board wipe until they can kill everything?

    Not exactly, 3 mana gets you 5 loyalty if you +1. You need to pay the kicker cost to get 6 loyalty (+1 on the token into 0 on the nontoken and draw a land). So 5 mana is ideal here.

    However I do think he might he’ll perform better than expected mainly because he’s not a win condition and he doesn’t hurt the opponent’s board, so your opponent has very little incentive to attack him which might mean he’ll stick around as a nice little engine for the player. Also the at the worst he can be used to “cycle” into a new card or two means he’s not a completely dead draw late game.

    Rather than saddle those cards with legendary rules errata, I’d prefer the errata to be the rules text “this card can be your commander” that planeswalker commanders have. It would mean that the errata would have no impact on other formats (not that I think it would matter much, since they’re fringe cards outside of commander) and it would allow for some fun cloning antics that players don’t normally get to do besides the few specific cards that circumvent the legend rule.

    The idea of six dual lands is interesting. Makes me wonder if colorless costs are returning. I know they said no Eldrazi, but if the ruins that they left will be featured in the set then perhaps we’ll also see wastes and have a few colorless mana matters cards, implying that colorless mana has forever left it’s mark on Zendikar.

    The reason why I say this is because a cycle of 6 dual lands only works if there are 6 types of mana, unless they are okay with one enemy dual in a set of 5 allied duals or visa versa. It could also be just a miscommunication and the 6th land is not a dual land.

    Could be interesting if true, it feels a little like a sorcery through the breach (without haste, but the card sticks around), that is if you have a land to follow up casting it. The design fun, it is effectively a planeswalker that has a cmc of 4, but will almost always be cast the turn after reaching 4 mana to get the landfall trigger and then ultimate.

    She could also just be cast turn 4 without landfall and then untap a land to hold up a one mana interaction to try to protect her and then she can possibly ultimate the next turn when all your lands are untapped leaving you with all your mana open to try to stop the opponent from removing whatever you cheat into play.

    Unless there’s a non-blue spellslinger archetype in standard before Throne of Eldraine rotates I don’t think this will replace Mystical Dispute, though it could be copies 5-8 of dispute in some matches.

    If I mutate a Wildwood Scourge and then cast another copy of the Hydra, it would go infinite, right?

    I was wondering this myself and I think that it will go infinite, since a mutated creature only has the creature types of the topmost card.

    702.139e A mutated permanent has all abilities of each card and token that represents it. Its other characteristics are derived from the topmost card or token.

    Edit- I just realized that mutating onto Wildwood Scourge and then casting another isn’t the same as casting it with Enduring Scalelord on the battlefield. Its triggered ability is missing the “may” that scalelord has. This means having a mutated scourge on the battlefield and then casting a 2nd scourge ends the game in a draw since the player cannot stop both cards from infinitely triggering eachother unless they have a removal spell, sac outlet or stifle effect.

    By the way, can we stop a moment and appreciate how far Medwedjew has come? That is, Red Bears. :p Here we have an uncommon with exact Bear stats and two upsides!

    Compare for example to Mage-Ring Bully, also with prowess, but a downside (admittedly at common).

    Most Red Bears of the distant past (all the way back to Ironclaw Orcs) just had a downside because red did not have really efficient creatures.

    To be fair, Mage-Ring Bully was a strangely amazing common for Magic Origins limited. The fact it had to attack made it impossible for your opponent to know if you had any sort of instant speed interaction that could lead to a blow-out if they tried to block since there was a ton of instant speed pump spells in the format. There was Enshrouding Mist, Might of the Masses, Titan’s Strength, Mighty Leap and Titanic Growth all at common rarity and all really great to cast on a 2/2 with prowess that had to attack. I remember going turn 2 bully, turn 3 mighty leap, titan’s Strength and attack with a 9/7 flier.

    I fully understand the argument both for and against keywording mill. Every player since the printing of Millstone has called the effect “milling” and keywording the phrase will free up text space in the rules box of cards, but the term itself isn’t intuitive for new players who are unfamiliar with the origin of the term and they try to make core sets as intuitive as possible since those sets are seen as being the best entry points for new players.

    However I think the argument for keywording mill now has greater strength now than it use to have, this is because everyone carries a smart phone now that they can use to look up MtG keywords at any time. That is why I think WOTC finally made the move to keyword it.
