Although Prison Term's last ability doesn't target anything, Prison Term can't be attached to something that it can't enchant (e.g., a creature with protection from white) (C.R. 115.1d, 701.3a, 702.16c, 303.4j). Note that a creature with protection from white not only can't be targeted by abilities from white sources (C.R. 702.16b), but also, among other things, can't be enchanted by white Auras (C.R. 702.16c).
EDIT: Add rule citation after comment 5 was posted.
EDIT (Jan. 29): One rule was renumbered in the meantime.

peteroupc posted a message on Fetchlands & mana abilitiesAn ability of the form "T, Pay 1 life, Sacrifice [this land]: Search your library for [a certain kind of card], put it onto the battlefield, then shuffle" (as found in Bloodstained Mire, for example) is not a mana ability, since it doesn't produce mana when it resolves (C.R. 605.1a). (Thus, the answer to your first two questions is: no and yes.)Posted in: Magic Rulings
Because of this, an ability with that form goes on the stack when it's activated, like nearly all other activated abilities (C.R. 602.2a; compare with C.R. 605.3b). And for that reason, that ability can be the target of other spells and abilities, such as Stifle or Spellskite's ability (C.R. 113.1c).
The reminder text on the Stifle card as printed in Scourge says that mana abilities can't be countered for the reasons that—- mana abilities don't use the stack, "so [they] can't be targeted, countered, or otherwise responded to" (C.R. 605.3b, 605.4a),
- what Stifle means by an "activated or triggered ability" is an activated or triggered ability object on the stack (C.R. 113.1c),
- spells can target only objects or players, not characteristics on a permanent (C.R. 113.1c, 109.1a; review C.R. 113.1a), and
- Stifle can't counter something it doesn't target (see also C.R. 608.2b).
EDIT (Mar. 31): Add rule citation.
EDIT (Jan. 5): Edited, including because some rules were renumbered with Core Set 2020.
EDIT (Jun. 7, 2021): Edited to conform to recent Oracle text changes. -

Natedogg posted a message on Leyline of Combustion x GrapeshotWhen the storm trigger resolves, you put all of the storm copies on the stack. Each copy will trigger the Leyline (because each copy is its own spell), but those triggers can't go on the stack until after you're done resolving the storm trigger. So all 19 of the storm copies will go on the stack, then all 19 of the Leyline triggers will go on the stack, and the 19 Leyline triggers will resolve first, before any of the storm copies resolve.Posted in: Magic Rulings -

Posted in: ComboQuote from Atreyu83 »Forgotten Cave should not be considered as a land, but as a spell. It could take the place of an enabler, not a land. I see it as a better Dakmor Salvage.
I've gotten Modern Dredge games under my belt since Prized Amalgam got released, and I'll tell you that Forgotten Cave does a terrible job of imitating Dakmor Salvage. Dakmor Salvage makes 1-land hands more keepable just by being in your deck, is one of the easy cards to Dredge when you need to reanimate Bloodghasts, is a fine card to emergency Dredge when none of your other Dredgers get binned, and taps for black mana to mana fix our sideboard cards.
(I personally still splash/main blue for Tome Scour because it's virtually Dredge 5 on Turn 1 and is a significantly better Shriekhorn, and I love how 2-3 Dakmor Salvage helps me cut lands, go for only 1-mana enablers (so I play full playsets of both Tome Scour and Shriekhorn--I generally find that Cathartic Reunion ends up in 1-land hands too often), and lets me skew the Golgari Thug-Life From the Loam counts in favour of Thug.) -

Someone told me that the cards not spoiled will be available tomorrow, 05/31, is it true? Thanks for your hard work!
That was likely me. Yes, all of the cards will be posted on the mothership tomorrow morning -

thatmarkguy posted a message on On Thin IcePosted in: The Rumor MillQuote from Sephon19 »Uh, why are people not happy about this. Just play snow lands and it's a better Chained to the Rocks. Was it because of this stance:
First of all, even if it is better that Chained to the Rocks, that's a pretty low hurdle for a card seeing no competitive play. There are reasons why CttR isn't used. It's sorcery speed. It's got two points of weakness to removal (enchantment and land). If it does get removes at instant speed it results in the creature being a surprise blocker or retriggering ETB effects.
But it's even in question whether it even *is* better. In modern, everyone plays fetches and shocks. Getting a Sacred Foundry... is trivial. People run basics too, but usually don't want to pop their fetch to fetch a basic when they could be fetching support for their breadth of colors instead. But shocks aren't snow-covered. So for this to be 'better' you'd have to suggest players would be happy to pop the shock to fetch a basic snow land (to be an eligible target for this), than to get their choice of shock that provides mana in two colors. That's a mighty inconvenient constraint.
Sure, I'll grant that using shocks for CttR is more fragile because Field of Ruin (and other nonbasic hate like Fulminator Mage). But they're both equally vulnerable to Ghost Quarter, and any sort of enchantment removal.
Is it better than Chained to the Rocks? It's debatable. But even if you come out on the "Yeah, it's a little better than Chained to the Rocks" side of the debate... is 'a little better' enough to turn Chained from unplayed to staple? With all its known deficiencies? I think nay.
Quote from Raalic »It's not great, but it is better than Chained to the Rocks because the land that enables it can produce the mana required to cast it.

Joban8 posted a message on [Primer] G/W Auras (Bogle)Yeah, the Modern playables from WAR haven't been very kind to us. If you're running into multiple decks running Blast Zone, I think it'd be appropriate to pack some interventions in the SB; like you mention, it has enough versatility that you can justify the spots. Another option might be Solemnity depending on which one covers more bases for your particular meta. Swapping out a SPiritdancer for a Silhana Ledgewalker, playing full sets of both umbras, & 2+ Mantles might also be something to consider. Certainly not ideal, but may help lessen the damage from both Blast Zone and Chalice on 1.Posted in: Aggro & Tempo -

pierrebai posted a message on Bond of FlourishingIt's better than oath of nissa as it can grab any permanent and gives you 3 life. Grabbing artifacts is very relevant in making the card better and grabbing an enchantment is a bonus that can come up when searching for an early Rest in Peace. Ancient stirring is heavily played in colorless decks. People would complain that blue can't get preordain yet green would get this.Posted in: The Rumor Mill -

Joban8 posted a message on [Primer] G/W Auras (Bogle)I can think of a few matchups where I'd might want to side him in; at least worth testing seeing he's uncommon and won't break the bank. My first thought went to how he could help us vs Phoenix decks via taxing their spells and buying some time to find a Path before TiTi flips. The PW ability specifying damage dealt by any permanent seems like it could lead to some shenanigans. I definitely think it'd be fun to jam him in the SB for a few games and play around with him, but I ultimately feel like he's just too awkward between needing 3 mana to cast, requiring we be in a situation where it'd be the right call to pause our gameplan to play him, the inherit awkward hands you'd encounter if running more than a singleton, etc. Regardless, I'm kinda looking forward to giving him a whirl and seeing how it goes, especially if there's a non-zero chance he could be useful in the Phoenix/TiTi matchup. Because my Mirror Entity experiment hasn't been going as well as I had hoped lol.Posted in: Aggro & Tempo - To post a comment, please login or register a new account.

Sorry, but what do you mean as "quote box"? The video about devotion isn't on line anymore =(
When you say "gives +?/+?" you mean "gives +X/+X" or you mean that it wasn't possible to identify the information in the video?

Great question! I’ll try to reach Mark Rosewater and ask it in Tumblr

I’ve been testing 2x Noxious Revival in SB and I can tell you it was great in many matches. This land can make exactly the same effect and can’t be countered... will be probably very useful in a future metagame where opponents can destroy our auras at instant speed without paying any mana.

Holy mother of God! I totally forgot about Solemnity! I'll try it. Thanks a lot!

We can stop Explosives with Gaddock or Stony Silence... but this new land is tough. Suppression Field helps, but doesn't stop it. Heroic intervention would be useful for many other purposes too.

I'm crossing my fingers for Sterling Grove. This card is amazing and would become a great tool box for Bogles.

Holy mother... this is what I call a lesson about Magic: The Gathering. Thanks a lot for your patience and effort, my friend! Now I completely understand the difference between the shortcut and the retaining priority thing.
Thanks to all the other great answers above too! This forum is really, really great. Everyday a new lesson
