So I watched someone stream UW teferi/karn whirza last night and I’m convinced it will play a part in the meta now. It’s certainly slower than grixis but can interact better with the top decks post board and is likely the mirror breaker.
Well I ended up going 1-2 with the deck, I will say it has been the worst outing in weeks of playing the deck but I tried a few new changes.
-2 Mind stone +2 Pentad Prism
-1 Thopter Foundry + Ghirapur Aether Grid
-1 Goblin Engineer + 1 Whir of Invention
Plus adjusted the lands to get Inventors' Fair and Cavern of souls (all the creatures are Artificer)
Games 1 GB Elves: 1-2
Match 1: he landed a early shaman on the pack and never pumped his dorks
Match 2: Bridge Lock
Match 3: just too fast for me to get set
Game 2 Valakut 1-2
Match 1: just to fast and couldn't the get the combo in time
Match 2: opening hand " 2 bauble, mox opal, Inventor's fair, Thopter foundry, sword of the meek, bridge
Match 3: I had him locked up with witchbane orb and bridge with spellskite but eventually got enough artifact hate
Game 3: 8 Rack 2-1
Match 1: destroyed my hand to fast
Match 2: I was able to draw plenty of cards and gain life
Match 3: he never got a rack card, and i got a early orb with urza out.
Overall, the deck never gets blown out and it is super fun to play plus can be very difficult at times. I never once needed Pentad prism in the games, aether grid is nice win con in the deck. I will say I like having three Whirs in the deck and I used them all the time actually for searching for pieces. I will say I am not the biggest fan of scrap trawler and I don't think he is needed.I have used him multiple weeks now and I never really get to abuse its ability.
I think you could open a few spots in the deck
-1 Scrap trawler
-2 pentad prism
-1 Nihl Spellbomb
I think could be interesting cards to try out for MD
Paradox engine
hangarback walker
Mishra, Artificer Prodigy
MD Engineering Explosives
Chalice of the void
Its hard to argument if bolt is better then galvanic, i just don't have galvanic and in that store was out of stock to buy too.
But galvanic and wear/tear i want to try in.
I like skite and think he is so usefull to protect our pieces
Spellskite has been a sneaky whir option against decks like bogles and infect.
Round 1 Esper Obzedat (2-1)
Round 2 UR Phoenix (2-0)
Round 3 RG LD (Ponza) (2-0) Played the goblin on t2, but lost my swords by Surgical Extraction, but Sai wins me the game
Round 4 Brun (2-1) get back to the game after go 1 life, spellskite saves me this game a lot of times
Round 5 Jund (0-2) I guess this match was to be good for thopter/foundry, but he drew better and always had Decay and Ooze to slow me down.
Round 6 UW Control (1-1) I dont think this match is good for us as you guys sad, but maybe is why i hate control? hahah, but again, he always had response for my plays.
I really like the list but one question, do you like lightning bolt over galvonic blast in the SB? I think Spellskite is awesome addition to the deck and i have one in my deck that I run.
How were the serum visions?
How useful was the ramp from mind stone, were there any times you wished it was the other way round and they acted as astrolabes 5 and 6 (i.e. would you consider playing prophetic prism?)
Did you miss not having more whirs? Ive felt in these urza builds that whirs just kinda sit in my hand... im usually even casting my tezzerets before whir!
Could you see a time sieve in tbe main as an alt wincon?
The serum visions were okay, it is nice to set up the next draws. I really think the mind stones are nice to get out a urza a turn faster and for card draw but I think the its mainly there for the scrap trawlers combo. I actually like two wellspring in the deck to loop back and forth with goblin engineer. I will say I think I like the jeskai version over the grixis, if you are in a graveyard meta at your fnm I'd say grixis but Jeskai is still my favorite as of now. I like having the wear//tear and teferi, the time reveler in the sideboard for control decks since we are running less whirs. Also I think with new london rules you are going to see more chalice decks pop up like eldrazi wnter. That was my first match and that was a beating but I was able to beat him barely because I ran 4 goblin engineers.
The whirs are are nice in the deck to sneak a bridge in.
I think Goblin engineer is a 4 of in the deck and if your opponent can't get it off the board, you are running away with the game.
So I played Brian Coval's list last night at my modern night event and I will say I kind of missed not having Sai in the main deck. The extra thopter generator and using them to make mana with Urza. I never got a chance to use the scrap trawler combo but it was my first time using it and I never played KCI so I will need practice with the combo but I wanted to give my two cents. Also my Modern event doesn;t have alot of graveyard hate which this list has a ton of it.
I've been trying this list and its pretty damn fun! I'm thinking of cutting one Day of Judgment for either another Oblivion Ring, or another Sword of X and Y
Field of Ruin hasn’t really impressed me, as we want to operate on blue sources all the time. Force of Negation has been a great addiction, that in Mono Blue you’ll never have trouble casting, and it permits you to cast Djinn with active protection for the opponent’s bomb.
I considered a split of Archmage’s Charm and Cryptic Command, but the latter is truly too versatile for a decklist which doesn’t pack many removals.
So there is a guy at my FNM that plays this exact deck but instead of the djinn he plays Pteramander instead. He typically does quite well with the deck. Also he plays Chart a Course for card draw and delver in the deck that I know of.
So I have been playing this deck last Monday night and went 2-1. Last night I played it against and went 3-0 and never dropping a games. The deck felt so good and was winning from so many angles.
2-0, Abzan walker deck ( basically azan control)
2-0, Mono blue control ( Snapcaster, thing in the ice, Pteramander deck with counters)
2-0, Mono red Phoenix,
I don't think I want to make any changes as of right now but I wanted to give you my updates.
https://magic.wizards.com/en/articles/archive/mtgo-standings/modern-league-2019-06-14#kanister_- this is the 5-0 deck of his from last friday's 5-0 dump that he based off TheNobody's list. If you click through his twitch video past broadcasts you'll see him playing a UWR variant recently, including a bit today, as well as the Grixis version linked above. I think he's been doing pretty well with the deck overall recently. He went 6-2 in the weekend's modern challenge with a UWR version, you might find it in the results, I dunno exactly where he placed
I just thought I say the UWR shell felt pretty solid last night, I ended up going 2-1 beating infect and GB elves but I lost to the 11 Rack deck in 3 games.
I will say the Mox opal felt weird at times because it took longer to activate.
I've been trying out UWR for a little while, and Kanister's changes as well. Kanister basically just plays white for sideboard Paths, and teferi, and today Fragmentize and Sunbeam Spellbomb. So pretty minimal stuff. So basically losing dead of winter, ego, battle for those. In many ways Path is a strict upgrade to black removal, though Battle does have bonus effects vs burn, so there is that. Teferi is great protection for the combo and against control especially. I'd say teferi is one of the biggest reasons to potentially be white. He's got 4x Leyline of the Void for his graveyard hate.
I do think the egos are less needed now that the list is more combo. Games don't drag out to turn 57 anymore usually. Even things like artifact destruction is less of a concern, since 1) we're less focused on Ensnaring bridge usually, and 2) the combo doesn't super care about artifact destruction. Especially if you have Urza and Sword in play, and then play Foundry, artifact destruction is entirely irrelevant. I've had people try it, and as long as you have artifacts/mana to sacrifice something in response to get sword back and just continue going off, which is easy to do with Urza providing a ton of mana, you're fine. You can just keep going off with the Abrupt Decay or whatever on the stack, making a ton of tokens and maybe activating Urza until you hit another Foundry, let it resolve, play the foundry, do your thing again. Likewise creature removal works the same, go off in response until you hit another urza, let the removal resolve then replay Urza.
So far I quite like Jeskai. I think the biggest thing I miss, is Dead of Winter in the board for creature matchups like Humans. Kanister is playing 2 path and 3 bolt though, which helps a lot as well. So i dunno
I think in the end the difference between Jeskai and Grixis isn't huge and comes down to just some sideboard options. White traditionally has the most powerful sideboard cards in modern, so I could see Jeskai becoming the preferred option.
Losing Ego certainly does hurt the tron matchup, but even with it the tron matchup wasn't exactly good anyway.
Hard enchantment removal is nice, but I'm not sure how needed it really is. Urza, Aether grid, Sai, etc all provide very valid ways to beat Stony Silence or Rest in Peace. Echoing Truth is ok too, though less good. But it is nice that you can assemble your combo, bounce whatever is stopping you and just win. Though Teferi is great for that too while also providing other value.
On a sidenote, I love that Kanister is playing the deck a lot lately. It's great to have a MPL level player in the same page as us, as well as getting more people interested in the deck. The more people trying it out means the more we'll be able to narrow down to what is the "best" build, if there really is one. And it's great just to be able to watch someone else play the deck. I don't agree with all of his decisions in deckbuilding, but hearing others thoughts, especially when they have success with it, is great
Where can I find this Kanister list, I like to try it out tonight at my local FNM.
I had a reasonable successful artifact prison deck I have played for a few months, but now with the new Karn, the Great Creator it seems to have gotten so much better. I am looking for suggestions for the tool belt (sideboard).
Obelisk of Alara provides a finisher that can be tutored. Mana is not a problem because of the lattice.
Weaknesses are predictably control decks.
So i'm asking for suggestions of cards in the sideboard. Silver bullets for different meta game decks. What is the most effective single (artifact) card that can be cast against UW control, tron, dredge. Whatever. It doesn't matter if it is dead 95% of the time because I only need 1 for that 1 in 20.
I really think ancient stirrings should be in this deck to find lands or your artifacts.
Im seeing a new addition to the meltiin style list from a while back. Figured it could be fun.
So the more I play this deck, the planeswalkers seem so strong and typically win the games for me. Also surgical Extractionare being main boarded which makes our win cons even worse so why aren't the Tezerrets played in the mainboard instead of just being in the sideboard.
I would be curious to see a decklist

I assume the pyrite spellbomb is for the spot removal and card draw. I am lacking a few cards so I am going to put the narset/puzzlebox in too.
