What are you playing these days, Jordan? Are you still on Mandrills, or have you migrated to Hexdrinker or Mongoose? For what it's worth, I'm super pleased with roughly 56/60 of my main deck right now, and while it's hard to say we're well-positioned, I think we have gotten some important tools in these last few sets.
I will say that while Jund was never easy, Wrenn and Six has made it that much more difficult. That card is a house against us. Pings our dudes, drowns us in card advantage. It even makes the Blood Moon plan pretty sketchy postboard.
I'm on this. Wrenn and Six is great in this kind of strategy IMO, just have to build around it a bit.
When do we want Hazoret? I'm on Counter-Cat too, but I feel that I don't like him that much. Sure, he's fine as a topdeck when we are empty handed in grindier matchups, but he is also a 4 mana creatures that just dies to the most common removal spell in the format (path).
No love for the deck right now? I'm 2 Scalding Tarn and 4 Misty Rainforest away from finally completing it. Have a lot of cards that I do want to try, but this is what I will begin with:
Sideboard (which I still dunno how to get it to work on here)
// 8 Artifact
SB: 2 Pithing Needle
SB: 2 Engineered Explosives
SB: 2 Damping Sphere
SB: 2 Grafdigger's Cage
// 4 Creature
SB: 1 Hazoret the Fervent
SB: 2 Knight of Autumn
SB: 1 Huntmaster of the Fells
I think the rest of the deck would look a lot like old Puresteel lists. Aether Vials, a lot of other cheap equipment to take advantage of Puresteel, maybe a Sword of This and That or two. Maybe a Steelshaper’s Gift or two.
The only thing I’m not certain of is if it would be better as Human Tribal instead of Knight Tribal. I hope not, honestly, cuz I’m tired of Humans and I really really want to make a good Knight Tribal deck. Really it all depends on whether Knight Exemplar pulls her weight or not. 3cmc is really expensive, but indestructibility is a pretty rare and sweet thing to bestow on all your critters. Still, all the knights are Humans and would translate over to a human build with easily with Swiftblade Vindicator as a great addition.
I know this wasn’t in response to the Colossus Hammer discussion, but I figured I’d save a post and reply here. Man, I just think the 3cmc slots are already so strongly contested with cards that are a little bit better and/or synergistic. I don’t see him being worth it.
I tried to quote this the last time I posted, dunno why it din't work. But I would reeaally like to see a draft of a list here!
Plains = A little because of Path, but mostly because of Field of Ruin that my meta is packed of. The other choice is Sacred Foundry and I think the downsides of that is bigger than the upsides. Maybe Mountain instead?
Send to sleep = It looks insane against other creature based tempo decks that are looking to block us or just to tap them out of 1 attack.
Thought Scour = I got terrified by the fact that some people in the thread wrote that it just milled their cards that they needed. I think I can afford to play Mandrill some turn later.
But I haven´t tested the deck yet, so I could be wrong. Is it even possible to optimize a deck the first try?
Against field of ruins it's more important to keep fetches for when you need the mana. Forest and Island are enough. Plains in starting hands leads to mulligans most of the times. I'd put the third tarn.
Milling singleton lands with thought scour can happen but very rarely; it could mill useless cards too at the same rate and when you have two unflipped delver you can use scour to help flipping at least one of them. It's a false fear. It's more important to be aggressive. I don't like scours much but they're necessary.
Well, I kinda need some mana the first few turns, and as soon as the opponent know what he´s doing he will destroyt the most important lands, and I need to be able to produce more than 2 colors of mana. We don´t always draw fetches in these situations, since we are low on lands.
I will try out Thought Scour sometime in the future, though!

First draft of the deck. I´m about to get back to magic after about 2 years of abscence, and this is one of the decks I´m thinking about playing. I know my deck looks kinda counter heavy compared to others, but shat do you think about it otherwise? I´ve read trough all pages in this thread and considered a lot of cards, so it was really tough to choose only 60
1. Protean Hulk dies, triggering its ability. Search for Viscera Seer, and Body Double. Body Double comes into play as a copy of Protean Hulk.
Supposedly, there is no Viscera Seer under your control yet. Therefore no combo piece is on the field to target with creature removal.
2. Use Viscera Seer to sacrifice the Body Double(Protean Hulk). Search for another Viscera Seer, and another Body Double. Body Double comes into play as a copy of Protean Hulk.
Since PHulk's ability is a trigger and uses the stack, the opponent could get rid of the Seer in response. If he does, you have to search up another. Therefore, you need at least two Seers.
3. Use Viscera Seer to sacrifice the Body Double(Protean Hulk). Search for another Viscera Seer, and Reveillark.
Like before, your opponent can get rid of the Seer in response to the PHulk's trigger. Therefore you need yet another one for a total of three.
4. Use Viscera Seer to sacrifice Reveillark, which will bring back both Body Doubles. 1 comes in as a copy of Hulk, and the other as a copy of Reveillark.
And if the opponent tries to respond to the Reveillark trigger, you can simply choose to instead return a Seer and the Double, the later copying Reveillark. Then repeat step 4.
And from here on, you can always get a Seer to keep the combo going. So you need three Seers only in the worst case scenario, but you can't do with less then.
Yeah, that part I get. What I don´t get is how to play around infinite removal, like everyone sais the deck can (besides Path). How does it work exactly?
Not really a rule question, more of a how the hell does this work kind of a question.
So I´ve been thinking of getting back to magic, and modern, and my deck of choice is the Bubble Hulk combo deck. I understand the core and everything, but one thing everyone sais has me confused, and that is that the deck can avoid any amount of removal if I sequence it correctly (apart from path to exile). The primer writes how to do it, but I don´t get why and I also don´t get if it´s necessary too have three Viscera Seeror if two is enough. I will copy the cards that are used for the combo and also the explanation he used now:
1. Protean Hulk dies, triggering its ability. Search for Viscera Seer, and Body Double. Body Double comes into play as a copy of Protean Hulk.
2. Use Viscera Seer to sacrifice the Body Double(Protean Hulk). Search for another Viscera Seer, and another Body Double. Body Double comes into play as a copy of Protean Hulk.
3. Use Viscera Seer to sacrifice the Body Double(Protean Hulk). Search for another Viscera Seer, and Reveillark.
4. Use Viscera Seer to sacrifice Reveillark, which will bring back both Body Doubles. 1 comes in as a copy of Hulk, and the other as a copy of Reveillark.
5. Use Seer to sacrifice Body Double(Protean Hulk). Search for Mogg Fanatic and Reveillark.
6. Sacrifce Mogg Fanatic to deal 1 damage to the opponent. Use Seer to sacrifice Reveillark to bring back Mogg Fanatic, and Body Double. Body Double comes into play as a copy of Reveillark.
7. Sacrifice Mogg Fanatic to deal 1 damage to the opponent. Use Seer to sacrifice Body Double(Reveillark) to bring back Mogg Fanatic and Body Double. Body Double comes into play as a copy of Reveillark.
8. Repeat steps 6 & 7 for infinite damage.
The example above uses three Viscera Seer, but I´ve seen many players only using two, so my question is how does this work exactly? Why can this avoid any creature removal and why can´t only one Seer do that? Or two? Sorry for my noob question, it´s been a while since I played.
Hope this is okey as a rule question. The thread for the deck is kind of dead, so I´m not getting my answer there.
After a break from Magic for like 2 years, I´m about to get into it again, and I´m thinking about starting with this deck. Combo is my thing, and this looks like a really fun deck.
I´ve thrown this together, and would like some thoughts from you guys that actually played it. Any thoughts?
