The Artwork of Ninja of the New Moon is way to cool to be such a bad card. What a waste...feels bad man.

But a Ninja invasion in a medieval barbarian continent with lots of snow would definitely make a sweet theme.

Hexdrinker is definitely a card to consider. As well as the ever shroudy Nimble Mongoose.
Having a creature that we don't have waste our protection spells on got me thinking what our disruption shell should look like.

Force of Negation will probably be an auto include. How many copies has to be debated. Disrupting Shoal might have its uses still, especially in a creature heavy meta.
What I'm having trouble with at the moment is figuring out the other counterspells. Every deck we play against has two drops that we definitely don't want on the board (Thing in the Ice, Thalia, Guardian of Thraben, Meddling Mage, Snapcaster Mage, Rest in Peace, Manamorphose, the list goes on...). Shouldn't Spell Snare be a four of MB? It is the definition of Tempo.

Another card that I think might be underrated is Delay. It doesn't draw us a card unlike Remand and isn't a hard counter like Mana Leak in the early game. But it does exactly what we want, we gain three turns to finish our opponent off. Another positive is that the spell is removed from the game, so the opponent can't gain advantage from it being in the graveyard via delve, flashback, and whatsoever.

By not getting an removal spell that we wished for (besides Magmatic Sinkhole, which has to be tested), I think I'll try a full set of Vapor Snag and Rending Volley or Combust split between MB and SB. Creature decks like Humans and Spirits give me the most trouble, which are exactly these colors. Bouncing a Gurmag Angler with Snag feels great too.

This is just my two cents after a midly disappointing spoiler season without Wasteland equivalent Shocked (which probably would have made Modern a disaster Jam )

I'm not sold on Hexdrinker yet. It definitely is a strong card in the right situation but against humans it'll get blown out by Reflector Mage. Roast can deal with it easily as well. It is just so mana hungry for an effect that doesn't impact imediately.

I'm tinkering with Crack the Earth as turn two play after deploying a threat (Goose or Delver) on turn one, we then can keep mana open for Spell Snare or Spell Pierce. The problem with Crack the Earth is, we are 2 for 1 ourselves. It would make Wrenn and Six more appealling in our list.

What do you guys think of Bazaar Trademage as another piece in combination with Nimble Mongoose? It doesn't turn on ferocious but it draws cards, fuels the graveyard for goose / goyfs and has evasion to punch through.

I would agree that Delver has it's issues and can be quite weak if it doesn't flip. But as far as my little experience with the deck has shown and the feed back I've gotten from other players is that it is a super cool deck and they have trouble playing against my deck because they don't know what to expect.

Further is soo much fun to play which surpasses its weaknesses for me. I rather loose a couple of games and have fun, then win at all cost but play the tier deck that every other dude at the store is familiar with.

The way this deck plays is just all I want from Magic. Playing efficent creatures, interacting with the stack + the burn damage for the reach. RUG has it all!
I'll look into playing a second simic charm mainboard. The versatility is great.
As a starter with this deck I really liked Peek to gain information at op's end step. It gives me more chances to plan ahead.

I went 2-2 the other night. It was a blast playing this deck again.

2-1 against Tron: The first game I had the surprise momentum and won by a margin. Game 2 he played Relic and I wasn't quick enough to Shoal for one. He then won after a long game with two Wurmcoil Engine. Game 3 went to extra turns, where I finished with Delver + Clique + Tarfire to bring him from 7 to zero.

2-1 against Suicide Zoo: Turn 3 win by the opponent while I didn't block with Goyf accordingly. After sideboarding 2x Dispel, I felt quite save and had the countermagic in hand at the right time. Dispel on Temur Battle Rage in Game 2, and Mana Leak on Death Shadow Game 3.

0-2 against Phoenix: The first game he bolted my Delver and Lightning Axed Goyf and then played Surgical Extraction on Goyf to take away my beater.
Game Two was great. I sideboarded Surgical Extraction and hit the Phoenix with it. He had one Thing in the Ice in the grave, which would have been target for the second Surgical but he played Thought Scour on my library after I scryed Delver and Surgical to the top. It went into almost never ending Pyromancer Acension card draw fest. He almost decked himself but finally finished with TiTi.

0-2 against Grixis Death Shadow: My opponent knew I played RUG Delver so he adjusted his gameplan and played more conservative. Delver not flipping for two turns didn't help either. Game two was rough because I didn't drew a second land during turn 2 and 3 which was too much of a tempo loss.

All in all it was a great evening. I'm tinkering around the idea to put a Saheeli, Sublime Artificer in the board. The idea of turning a Bauble into a Goyf for a turn seems great. Another idea would be Narset, Parter of Veils against decks that draw lots of cards (Phoenix). Would that be a reasonable play?
Thing in the Ice feels really bad to play against. How about more Vapor Snags? Snagging Allosaurus or Griselbrand seems like a nice play too.

After almost 3 months, without much playing time and lots of studying, I can finally play a modern event again. I'm gonna sleeve up my cards and hit the local scene tomorrow.

    my current list:

the mana base isn't like you guys suggested (I dont own a second copy of Vents or Pool yet). i'll try the stomping ground + island way.
I'm really excited to see how Peek performs.

Any major recommendations on the deck or on what to look out for? the meta quite diverse, not many phoenix players. what should I watch out for?

What is the current fetchland amount you guys are playing? I'm considering the following:
    2 x Islands
    1x Forest
    1x Mountain
one of each: Breeding Pool, Stomping Ground and Steam Vents.
    4x Misty Rainforest
    3x Scalding Tarn
    2x Wooded Foothills
    1x Flooded Strand

But I'm not sure about the Flooded Strand yet. Should I rather play with the Kaladesh fast lands Botanical Sanctum or Spirebluff Canal or get another shockland? and if so which one?

Reading your post there's two contraticding things.

For one you would like to get into modern, which is cool, because it's a great format (quite a commitment money wise but lots of longterm fun).
On the other hand you said you'd like to beat your girlfriends brother in commander.
Commander is a totally different format than modern. Commander is mainly casual and can be quite competitive in certain playgroups but it is casual for the most part. Modern on is mainly competitive.

If you like to get into modern at one point I'd suggest to check out a couple of videos on the competitive scene and see what decks you'd like play. Maybe at the store near you, you can check out what the people are playing and you can try out a deck.

If you want to get started with commander Dominaria is a cool set to get many legendary cards which could be your commander. Opening booster packs is always fun but out of the 15 cards that you get, only few have value or are good enough for a commander deck and even less are useful in modern.
Maybe there's commander precons at your local game store that you can purchase to have a deck to start with when playing against your gf's brother.

For both modern and commander i'd advise you to look for a deck and then buy the cards individually. for modern decks look on this site or check out on mtggoldfish.com. For commander go on edhrec.com.

if you want to find any card check out scryfall.com

good luck and have fun getting back into magic

I'm hoping for a Green or Red Faerie. The best would be to get one of each.

    They could be like:

    Forest Pixie G
    Flash
    Faerie Warrior
    Flying
Forest Pixies Power is equal to the number of Faeries you control.
    x/2

    Fervid Sprite 1(U/R)R
    Faerie Wizard
    Flash
When Fervid Sprite enters the battlefield *you may copy target instant or socery spell with cmc less than 3 that targets you or a permanent you control.
    3/1
*should definitely be a may clause

just a quick thought... any playable Faerie would be appreciated though.

Yea, I wouldn't play more than two Traverse the Ulvenwald. I don't want to see more than one in my opening hand.

My current meta tech would be Gnarlwood Dryad as a one or two of. I haven't played them yet and it'll be atleast two weeks until I can try them out localy (gotta finish my bachelor thesis Weird ) but I like them as a cheap creature with deathtouch and a relevant creature type against Thing in the Ice. It trades well with fatties and can become a reasonable clock once the graveyard is full.

I played with one Traverse during my first few FNM‘s with RUG. A play set feels like to much to me, since they need to be turned on by delirium first to be more than a basic land tutor.
The one of won me a game though by tutoring Thrun, the Last Troll against Esper Control.

    Hello Dear Delver aficinados!

First of all: I want to thank all of you! It's been a pleasure reading through all your thoughts and ideas on card choices and meta updates.

This is my first time commenting in this thread and I just wanted to introduce myself.
I'm fairly new to the modern scene and when deciding what deck I want to get into it was clear for me, that it has to be something in the Temur colors (hence my "creative" username and Savage Knuckleblade is my boy).
Since Temur isn't as prominent represented in Modern, it wasn't easy to find infos. When I discovered this thread everything I was looking was found. I haven't read all the pages but quite a lot and with every page it became more clear to me, RUG Delver is the deck I want to play. The passion and knowledge you all bring to this thread really got me thrilled.
My first runs didn't have the best results but I had a blast playing interactive magic (went 1-3; 2-2 and 0-1-2 at my FNM). I'm looking forward to get more into the discussion with you guys as soon as I get more playing time and knowledge on the deck.

For now I'm really happy to know there's many other RUG Delver enthusiast!

    Thank you
    yours sincerly Smile

    Temuric
