I had come to this topic to talk about that very same card, as well. It's either implying that Sorin currently lives on Tarkir following the events of WAR, or they did mean to have this card be the Atarka warrior from the story, and having him mention Kolaghan instead was an oversight.
Hey guys, I wanted to stop by and ask you what you think of this deck I tried to put together. The bread and butter of this deck is as follows:
Turn 1 - Land, mana dork
Turn 2 - Land, mana dork or Gravecrawler, Priest of Forgotten Gods
Turn 3 - Land, tap your mana dork(s) to put mana in pool, sac all of your other creatures to PoFG, drop Liliana, Dreadhorde General. Doing so with two mana dorks on the field actually leaves you with one mana open for a Fatal Push
From there, you aim to win by depleting the opponent's resources (Inquisition of Kozilek, Collective Brutality, Smallpox, removal) while beating them down with zombie tokens and Gravecrawlers. If Liliana can be ramped up to her ulti, all the better. Doomed Dissenter is there because I liked the idea of having something that can replace itself when sacrificed, but Scavenging Ooze would probably be a better option, especially considering that Dredge/Bridgevine, alongside Tron, is the most common deck in my meta (hence why the side looks the way it does). Constructive criticism is greatly appreciated.
All of your suggestions are very good, allow me to address them one by one:
1) I maintain Vizier of the Scorpion and Eternal Skylord are important for this deck, because Flying and Deathtouch are two extremely important abilities to have in EDH (the latter to allow this removal-less deck to keep other aggro players honest, and the former to check all those big flying threats that are always running around in the format). That said, I do see Amass not being very powerful on cards that do JUST that, so I removed Aven Eternal and put Prized Amalgam in its place. As for Phyrexian Delver, it was already there
2) Yeah, that Mystical Tutor was definitely supposed to be Entomb, must have gotten confused or something.
3) I never thought about Aetherflux Reservoir, but now that you mention it, it seems like a badass idea! I put that and Mana Vault in, replacing the two tribal artifacts which, while not really redundant per se, are just too pricey in terms of mana.
4) Beacon of Unrest is another card that I'd never considered, but I do see it being useful in a deck that has lots of graveyard shenanigans but no Eternal Witness. I'll test it and see how it goes
5) I chose not to include any wheels no Smothering Tithe, because doing so would require too many and too significant alterations to how the deck plays.
Welcome back! Glad to hear you’re recovered somewhat. And yeah, Wizards is churning through sets at a huge pace at present, salvation is changing hands, and Nexus is coming online soon with some of the EDH stalwarts from here behind the scenes running the show. I’ll be taking my lists there when it’s online.
Varina has been doing well. I’m still waiting for some pieces to throw in from an online order, and there’s been a few changes I have yet to document, but otherwise it’s a pretty enjoyable build to play at present. Still more of a mid range build than a combo build, but that’s what I like so that’s what I do.
Glad Varina has ben working out well for you. I was looking into the sets I had missed, and it seems to me Amass could be a decently powerful ability for her... So I figured I'd disregard everything else and build a list focused solely on producing and supporting zombie tokens: here, have a look.
I still kept the Gravecrawler+Phyrexian Altar combo because I'm a horrible person: in fact, Putrid Warrior is a stand-in for the upcoming Corpse Knight, which will be yet another finisher for said combo. The general idea here is to create lots of tokens, buff them, support them, and attack with them: draw power and tutors help speed us towards a wincon (a lord/god to set up a massive attack, or the aforementioned combo), while counters are meant to be used solely to stop enemy board wipes, or to prevent the pesky Niv-Mizzet playr from comboing off. Of course, all the missing cards are supposed to be lands. Your thoughts?
Upon seeing this guy and his idea for a Legacy deck focused around Dreadhorde Arcanist, I felt the concept had potential for Modern too, and I started brewing. For now I've settled on this, which seems... A mixed bag, really. When you don't succeed in getting Arcanist online, this deck feels frail, like it lacks the punch to actually get things done. But when you do succeed in getting Arcanist online, some very explosive plays are enabled all of a sudden, allowing you to draw a million cards off Ancestral Vision, removing virtually all of the relevant threats in the format with Lightning Bolt and Fatal Push, and ransacking the opponent's hand with Inquisition of Kozilek. And of course, Monastery Swiftspear and Young Pyromancer become infinitely bigger threats with Arcanist on the field.
So yeah, my list honestly needs A LOT of work, but I do believe from the bottom of my heart that the concept has potential, so I really would like to garner some interest around it to get people brewing, experiment various things, perhaps even get a primer going at some point down the road. Honestly once Arcanist is online Delver feels like the lesser of our threats, which is really crazy when you think about it. One thing I've noticed is that graveyard hate hits this deck particularly hard, so counter-side options would most definitely be needed.
Honestly, why they thought the word ichor wouldn't make people come to the wrong conclusions is beyond me.
Just like calling Ugin "the Ineffable" means he has a connection to Yawgmoth, no? ;P
Not the same thing. Before this card, every single instance of the word Ichor in this franchise had always been used in context related to the Phyrexians. This is literally the very first time in the history of MTG that word has been used to refer to something other than the Phyrxians: as such, I dare say mine was a reasonable guess, given that I didn't know about the stuff said on Twitter at the time.
... Oooooor you could just cast Demon of Catastrophes and get a bigger creature for less mana and no discard. I mean, I get this thing is repeatable (in theory), but that still seems like an awful lot of hoops to jump through in order to get Ob Nixilis of the Black Oath's token.
Yes.
It was already stated by Wizards that it was simply oil: they tried to make a joke about dinosaur fossils becoming oil, but they seem to have failed.
This is such an underrated post.

Updated version!

I literally just woke up, cut me some slack <.<
Still looks like a great card, I'll see if there are any decks of mine I can fit her in.
Exactly what I was thinking. I honestly don't like mono white as a color for EDH, but this one might be worth a shot.
EDIT: nvm

Then shame on them for using the word Ichor of all words <.<
