Comments like this for example - you pay $200 for the box, that's why you are there. This is just icing, I guess. It's not for me, but I don't understand the ire. Be angry at Collection Booster boxes instead?

I did a little research on this yesterday and believe Gravestorm is correct. I used the Wiki to make a list of mechanics that haven't been used since and disregarded mechanics that have been but in a different name (like Poisonous became Infect), and that led to a list like Absorb and Fateseal. But Fateseal was sort of used in a Jace (the big one), and referencing the doc Maro posted earlier the only mechanic that didn't have a caveat ("R&D told me to stop trying to use this mechanic (frenzy)" or "this slowed the game down to much (absorb)" or "This felt too mean (Fateseal)") was Gravestorm. He just mentions it and moves on. So that's my guess, and why.

I don't know how fair it is to blame Quality Control - are they supposed to review and be aware of all fan art just in case something like this happens? that doesn't seem reasonable. Certainly it's unfortunate for everyone involved, but the blame falls on the artist in this case, pretty squarely.

I agree the VIP boosters are stupid expensive, as in the product has become lame.
But the regular boosters seem packed full of value for $12-14 - that's not much more than I paid per pack for a box of Ultimate Masters and that was one of the most fun boxes I ever opened - and these have double the foil/rare slots.
