Had some time yesterday to make some alters for a new partner deck I just made. Figured I'd post them for the hell of it.

I just wish I could edit paper better to look less bland.

Edit:Watched a tutorial on Displacement stuff... and damn... that paper came out looking sexy.

This design is interesting. How do you add the scroll part as the textbox in them, especially making those words twisted like that please?

How? Half of it was muddling through stuff and suddenly turning out well. The other half was a tutorial I watched about making a wavy flag.

I'll list all the steps I that got me there though.

I should say, I tend to try to save things as separate files and pull them into other files as Objects allot. So any edits I later want to do cascade into everything built off it.

    Anyways... here we go.
    1)Create the Paper
In the main Card file, I merged together a couple paper images I liked until it looked decent, then deleted everything else and saved it as Paper.
    2) Make the Distortion map
The filter-distort-displace function uses a file, it treats darker colors as low points and lighter as high. I saved the Paper file again as Distortion, deleted everything and pulled in an object of the Paper file. I painted a bunch of layers with different white and black reflected gradients, then when satisfied hid the Paper object and saved.
    3) Pull the Paper file into the Card file
    4) Call filter-distort-displace on Paper, select the Distortion file.
    5) pull the Distortion file into the main file as a clipping mask for Paper. Hard Light, 60% Opacity.
I also added another layer as a clipping mask called Lighting, I chose a color to match roughly the ambient lighting and paint-bucket'ed the layer with it. Set it to 100% Opacatity and Saturation or 20~% and Color.
    6) call the distortion function on the text.
for me it always ended up looking too strong, so I created a second DistortionText file, a blank file with the Distortion file pulled into it. Set the Opacity to 40%, saved it. Saved the text as a smart object and then ran the filter function on it.

It's probably cleaner to do all the distortions filters (paper and text) in the actual Paper file, Distortion and Paper have to be in the same position, so if you want to move the Paper around in the main file and the Distortions are done in the main file... you'll unsynchonize them and make stuff messy. But if you do all that in the Paper file and when its all done pull it into the Main file... you can move it around to your heart's content.

here's a few pics of the steps

If you want more info, here's the tutorial I watched

    A few more recents:

Man. Those planeswalker arts look awesome and that inner shadow on Gideon's text box came out looking really good, same with the opacity on Liliana's text box.

For some reason the shape of the name box kind seems odd to me, maybe I'm just so used to the normal one though. I don't know if its intended, but the shadow on the planeswalker cost emblems makes it look like they are floating. A while ago I was messing around with some stuff to fix that, since the emblem is on both the card image and text box (the card image is further back so a broad shadow is fine, the text box is closer so a tighter shadow fits it better)... I fiddled with that a bit but don't exactly remember how I fixed it since the hard drive with those files crashed a bit ago. Anyways, well done man!

That is an awesome frame there.

The light red highlights on the bars, that and the texturing came together really, really well.

Have you released a template for it?
