I don't want to hate Carol Danvers but it's hard to like a fictional character that's become extremely polarizing. If there was a comic book character that you found polarizing that would cause you to be disengaged with that character correct? People liked Peter Parker as Spider-Man and Bruce Wayne as Batman because they could actually relate to their circumstances and apply it in real life. Carol Danvers as Captain Marvel? What's there to relate to? Did she struggle to get where she's at now? How is struggling in life a bad thing when overcoming it is a sign of growth?
I think having a series of disastrous relationships or watching the woman who stole your memories and powers and almost killed you become beloved and forgiven by everyone around her are relatable struggles. Heck, even in the movie she was repeatedly being turned into a tool by various organizations lying to her and decided to strike out on her own instead, which is a relatable struggle. Certainly more relatable than being an incredibly rich white man who decides to beat up strangers as a confusing form of revenge.
Y'alls real beef is that she didn't do a lot of MCU "he's right behind me isn't he" jokes and now y'all can't stop going on about how she doesn't deserve her powers or whatever.
Green moves on from the 4-mana 6/6 with downside to 3 mana, with Dinosaur-flavored downside... but it still won't do much in Standard lol
Raging Hammerskull2G
Creature - Dinosaur (Rare)
Whenever Raging Hammerskull attacks, if you don't control another Dinosaur, put a stun counter on it. (If a permanent with a stun counter would become untapped, remove one from it instead.) "I don't know if it hates the fungi specifically or it just likes to smash things. Either way, let it be."
- Samin, Oltec scout
6/6
It probably won't but it's a decent activator for all those "creature with at least 4 power" cards. Plus even with the counter you still get one swing.
What's funny is that since the "core people" in Ixalan are inspired by Native American cultures, it makes no sense that he has a Spanish nickname/title.
I mean the actual names of the actual folks are all vaguely nahuatl, it's not super shocking that the colonizers coming in are translating into a colonial language. It's sort of how they do stuff.
But he remembers being called Abuelo by "his people," i.e. not the colonizers, right? Unless you assume he and the person he was talking to in the story said "grandpa" in their native language, and the story writers "auto-translated" it into Spanish for some reason.
Yeah I think that's whats happening bc they've said in the past that these folks are actually speaking different languages and they just translate em. It's like in lotr where the humans are using elvish words all the time even when they know what the elvish words mean and the whole book is being translated to english from "Westron."

So descend, Descend X, and Fathomless descent, all in the same set doing slightly different things. My question is just: Why?
It's just descend x and fathomless descent. Either looking for a specific number or counting all of them for a variable effect. One of the issues with Threshold was that it was always stuck as a static number (7 cards) and could only return true or false. This opens up the design space significantly.
I just hope that the marvel set includes my favorite character, Captain Marvel, the girl Captain Marvel. Carol Danvers. The one played by alison brie in the movies. Love her.
I actually surprised by this. I figured Disney would keep the IP to do a Lorcana set or 3 out of.
I keep seeing you and others say this but like I got the strong vibes from lorcana that they're keeping it to disney animation. The framing of it certainly could support marvel stuff but they already have something like 50 movies of material to cover, plus they're doing like cool varaint versions of characters that already have a card.
I appreciate that when they do these they really do pull in a little of everything. Isometric fallout 1 and 2 lands? New Vegas characters? The Mothman from fallout 76? Good stuff.

Is it a cosmium gnome? What is that the guard is holding?

They got a dippy video up too.
This all feels inevitable and unsurprising I guess. Curious to see if they're gonna make their own universe or just do MCU stuff or what.
At this point there's no IP that would really shock me. Maybe if they started covering IP that already has a card game going. Pokemon MTG.
