Spanish text got me hyped for a new mechanic called Torment.
'^^
Guess storms in Spain must be really terrible. In Italian it's Tempesta, so I guess to my ancestors storms were more of a pest than a torment.
@Tiro of Meletis: If you ever feel like it, install MtG Forge from slightlymagic (open source, all cards available), build some decks there, and PM me for some 1v1 CMD matches.
; )
Urza's Saga Is all kinds of weird, though. As I scrolled down, my reactions were
->"Urza's Saga is now a cardname? Cool, and it's an actual Saga, too!"
->"Hey, cool, it's also an Urza's. Wait, what?" *reads typeline again* "A Saga that is a land???" coupled with "Huh, okay, cool in way? Because that at least officially introduces Enchantment Lands, which I wanted to see for years..."
->"Okay, guess you have to do that if you want the land-exclusive subtype Urza's and the enchantment-exclusive subtype Saga..."
-> "Mana cost instead of mana value? So no Elven Bow et cetera..?"
In summary, to me this card is about equal parts exciting and irritating. Huh.
I'm still yearning for Secret Lair: Power 9, for the low cost of one kidney and a pound of flesh nearest my heart.
Normally I'd be opposed, but surely, encouraging organ donation would be a reasonable and acceptable one-time reprint exception for the reserved list to be broken, right?
See, you think it'll work out that way, but someone else will donate your kidneys first if that happened.
Wow, that's dark. Also, possibly what really would happen in some cases.
O.O
Wonder if that land is going to lead to a megacycle over the next few years. I'm also surprised it doesn't require a black mana to use its lifelink ability.
Agreed. The Witch part alone kinda demands that, flavorwise. Then again, the very flavortext makes it clear that this clinic invites everyone, which especially in CMD makes putting any color symbol on it a big no-no.
They could've added some other black-ish activation cost, though, like paying life in advance, discarding or saccing stuff, which would also reflect why other houses might be reluctant to use the clinic.
Also, is Gyome, Master Chef supposed to be pronounced the same as the French name Guillaume?
I strongly suspect so, yes. Guillaume shares an etymological origin with Guillermo / William / etc., which means "will protect / defend." Very appropriate for a chef who has the potential to protect your entire board using foodstuffs. Phonologically speaking, it's also very likely a deliberate reference to (or conflation of) several popular French chef's names: Bourdain, Gordon, and Prudhomme all spring immediately to mind.
Thanks. I do wish the second "language" everyone learns in school was the international phonetic alphabet, and that every magic card would at least have a gatherer entry written in that. Like, I still don't know whether Licia, Sanguine Tribune is pronounced like Alicia without the A, or like Lucia but with an i instead of the u.

...love to see Carth give an upside "additional cost".

Hot Dam {R}
Enchantment - Aura
Aura player
Whenever an Island enters the battlefield under enchanted player's control, Hot Dam deals 1 damage to them.
Sweet Cheeses (or Holy Cheeses) {3}
Artifact
Sacrifice Sweet Cheeses (or Holy Cheeses): Each player creates three Food tokens.
Throwing Shade {B}
...
...you get the idea
Disappointed to see this not create or refer to Food tokens, too.

Love the fullart Counterspell, though.
