Collecting is fun. Good luck with the project!
Curious though, why not the Mirrodin version of Platinum Angel?

There's several different ways to do elves. The easiest to start into would probably be Rhys the Redeemed, though depending on the cards you've available Nath of the Gilt Leaf is also a great option.
Hope you keep interested! It's a fun format. -

Mar 3, 2011therestless posted a message on Ignorance is bliss indeed! Kuldotha Red in Extended. It definitely exploits a hole in the meta. People in T2 expect it and so play cards like Pyroclasm. People in 1.X do not and continue to play Firespout or Volcanic Fallout as their sweeper. That's about all the leeway this deck needs.Posted in: YesIamAruban Blog
I was at that PTQ. Played RDW (with MD Arc Trail, which would've helped a lot had I actually faced the guy), but scooped to a friend round 2 and didn't get my SB cards against UW later. -

Totally disagree on the Glaciers though. If I run out of basics that would mean I had 6-7 activations of Glaciers and a fetch or 2. If it lasts that long, awesome. -
Feb 22, 2011therestless posted a message on Karn, Silver GolemA fan? How did this happen?!Posted in: Musings
Now I'm all curious.
As to this list, it's been sitting on my table since a little before Staff of Domination got banned. Hell, that was before the Eldrazi even. I had a lot of fun with it though. It, quite fairly, got a reputation for being able to win out of nowhere after it was presumed to be wiped out, or hitting someone for 1500 with a Gilded Lotus because people forgot about the Umbral Mantle that had been sitting there forever.
There's definitely some new toys for it recently. Kuldotha Forgemaster, Blightsteel Colossus, Spine of Ish Sah, and Mirrorworks all could be used, and that's just MBS. Of particular note there is the interaction between Spine, Sculpting Steel (copying spine) and Krark-Clan Ironworks for the 1: Vindicate.
A, dare I say, comprehensive list of combos in the deck? That is a pretty tall order. The deck is almost entirely combo pieces, with a minimum of utility, with special attention to pieces that have multiple possible interactions. Generally you assemble some infinite mana engine, get a piece that makes use of that, and win on the spot. Sometimes those outlets are subtle. There's enough possibilities that's it's more about seeing what you can make than just listing them out.
Major cards to look at though:
Voltaic Construct is the most easily used on account of Karn's ability. ~ + anything that taps for 3+ and you're most the way there.
Salvaging Station is remarkably efficient as a recovery/CA tool. If 8 things die at once, you get 8 untap triggers, and can return/sac/draw for each of those triggers with a Phyrexian Furnace or some such. Of particular note is how Karn can make something a creature so that it'll untap the Station when it dies so that the Station can immediately return it. Ashnod's Altar almost got in on account of this, and honestly should probably find a spot anyway.
Rings of Brighthearth is a scary card. This deck is so focused on activated abilities that it takes anything you do up a step. It also has it's own combos and with Deserted Temple, Voltaic Key, or Clock of Omens it's completely over the top.
On dealing with Aura of Silence (and Vedalken Heretic, Trygon Predator, Ruination...), well, it's effective. This deck is strong but vulnerable to such hate. Sometimes you just have to wait it out and play the politics to keep from dying. Having AiDs can help, but it is costly. If they give you too much time you can combo off under an Aura of Silence but it is difficult.
If you have any other questions feel free to shoot me a PM. -
Feb 16, 2011therestless posted a message on Cryptoplasm Question[card]Cryptoplasm[/card] = CryptoplasmPosted in: Hawkphan81 Blog
A few things to note with your scenario.
Copy effects are very particular about what they see. Basically, the only thing they'll pay attention to is the base card and other copy effects. Also, any time a card self-references (like Kemba does) it's really saying "this card/permanent" and will not be looking at similar objects. A more direct example, if a Quicksilver Elemental gains the abilities of a Nantuko Shade, then you can spend U mana to make the Quicksilver Elemental get +1/+1. The other thing to take away from the bit about copy effects, is that if you play Giant Growth on a Squire equipped with a Darksteel Axe and then Clone it, the Clone becomes... a 1/2 with no abilties, no P/T boost, no equipment. Just a copy of the card as printed.
You can target the Kemba with Cryptoplasm. When Cryptoplasms ability resolves, you'll have two legendary creatures with the same name and they'll both die. If Kemba's trigger hasn't resolved yet, it'll still see last-known information and give you your 3 cats. Even if Cryptoplasm had it's own equipment attached to it, those upkeep triggers go on the stack before anything else can occur so by the time it becomes a Kemba it's too late for it to trigger that ability.
Also, if you target a Phantom Nishoba then Cryptoplasm will become a 0/0 and, if lacking any toughness boost from some other source, will immediately die as you don't get 'enter battlefield' effects from the Cryptoplasms ability, just a characteristics change.
Cryptoplasm may be a bit awkward but it certainly gets you digging into the finer rules questions. So props for that! -

Sep 16, 2010therestless posted a message on Sasaya, Orochi AscendantYou might consider Early Harvest as Rude Awakening #2. I am thinking to revamp some of my decks soon, possibly with the release of Scars, and I hope to fit Sprouting Vines in somewhere (it really should be in the deck, and I just forgot about it till you mentioned it).Posted in: Musings
As far as the style of the deck is concerned, it is a shameless combo deck. I may have come down on your suggestions a little hard thinking the nature of the deck was more readily apparent.
One thing I like about Sasaya (combo version, as I know no other way to build it ), is how cheaply you can get it together. You could probably build a solid version of it for about $30 from zero cards and have the most expensive single be Life from the Loam. -
Sep 13, 2010therestless posted a message on Sasaya, Orochi AscendantI've had New Frontiers put me from dozens of mana available to hundreds of mana available. Enough to do truly ridiculous and immediately game-breaking things with Mirari, Nostalgic Dreams, Planar Portal, or Tower of Fortunes, generally leading directly to a game win.Posted in: Musings
Sprouting Vines is good, and it is a card I've wanted to fit in actually but I haven't been trying too hard recently. I agree that it is good in the deck though.
Stampede with Kamahl in play just seems unnecessary. Generally you'll just have enough mana that Kamahl is game over anyway (or similarly, enough tokens with Verdeloth) and without him it's mediocre to bad. In a more traditional deck (Asuza, Patron of the Orochi) with Multani et al it's fiendish to be sure, but I don't like it here.
Helix Pinnacle used to be in the deck but I found if I slow rolled it over several turns it just made me a target, and generally died to a global sweep, and if I were to pay 100 mana into something in a turn there's plenty of other cards with the same clock (Verdeloth) or that'll win on the spot (Squall Line). It's amusing, to be sure, but I don't find it efficient.
I think my New Frontiers is your Rude Awakening. -
Sep 13, 2010therestless posted a message on Sasaya, Orochi AscendantA comment! I never notice these because there's no notification on the control panel.Posted in: Musings
New Frontiers is played the turn you flip Sasaya to jump you WAY up in mana. Say you play and flip Sasaya with 8 Forests. Tap 2 Forests for 16, New Frontiers for 15, and you effectively 'ritualed' for 29 mana. It gets so much more ridiculous with more mana available. Sprouting Vines isn't bad though.
Time of Need gets anything in the deck I care about (Rofellos, Kozilek, tucked Sasaya, Verdeloth, what else is there?) and I'd rather not kill a draw to get it.
Mana Reflection is good. I don't think it's necessary at all, but it's a good backup plan.
Acidic Slime does too little. Relic Crush and Mystic Melting are way better, and even more so with Mirari. Overwhelming Stampede does nothing. Silklash Spiders is a weaker Tornado Elemental that doesn't do anything off a Chord of Calling. Cloudthresher is even worse in that regard. Hurricane is a worse Squall Line. -
Jun 16, 2010therestless posted a message on Akroma, Angel of WrathIt's certainly a good card, but I never liked the idea of removing my own stuff from the game (especially attached to such a high-priority target). We certainly could if you have something you want to put forward for it. I'm not so much a fan of how lacking in structure this one is.
Throat Slitter is good though.
That's fine, family is certainly the more important concern.
I was in the same spot a few years ago (grandma on my dad's side). When the realization hits It will be rough. It will get better.
I'm not much of a writer, but as a heads up the deadline is the 2nd. Is there anything you were wanting to finalize? I can design something as the 'prerelease promo' portion unless you had some actual card ideas in mind already.
Maybe 30%? Possibly less after they settle down.
75 double-sleeved will fit in the magnet boxes with room for a maybe 3-4 token cards and that's it. It's how I normally carry my tournament decks.
I've had no problems with them so far, but they are a touch shorter than I like.
http://forums.mtgsalvation.com/showthread.php?t=545563
This one looks pretty interesting.
Has to be Rout. I like Martial Coup quite a bit, but it really isn't good before 7 mana and that's not a good spot for a sweeper you may need to stabilise.
Torpor Orb stops the trigger of Portcullis.
Why would you be disappointed with Nighthowler?
It's probably not actually getting used with Theros coming out shortly. I do prefer FBB German to most promos though.
I took a few passes by the side event tables and didn't see anything that looked like cubing, but there was a bit going on over there.
I got strung on a bit playing T2 anyway. Out of the 10 round event, it was round 9 where I got my third loss.
Did much worse on the legacy side. On one hand, I can chalk that up to bad matchups. On the other, I willfully chose a deck whose matchups are very polar. Still, my first round of legacy was awesome.
My Smallpox v RUG Delver. It's a very good matchup for me but he does win game 2. Game 3, he hits Cursed Scroll and Mishra's Factory with Surgical Extraction, leaving me with zero cards left that can deal damage and excising 5 cards from my library. However, I destroyed every land in his deck that could produce colored mana. At game's end, I have a Liliana with over 20 counters, there are no cards in either library, and I win the match because he was on the draw and drew as many extra cards as he had removed from my library.
