I think new Thalia slots in like this:

Maybe no Vials is no good but I'd rather have more chances at Turn 2 Thought-Knot, Turn 2 Strip Mine or Turn 2 Thalia 2.0.

This is a great MD version of Vryn Wingmare. It hits the basic mechanics of Magic: The Gathering and so, unlike Wingmare isn't dead against aggro decks. The asymmetrical Root Maze effect is very, very sweet, it's very taxing. Brutally taxing I think when backed up with Thalia 1.0 and any incidental Ghost Quartering. She's much better on T2 than T3 or later but still OK after turn 3. I think she we will be best in Hatebears or GW Death and Taxes for that reason.

I'm not a fan of Leonin Arbiter 50% of the time but this Thalia adds to the rewards for playing Arbiters. Plus Arbiter is much better on Turn 2 with a GQ that turn 3 and again...mana dorks.

In CoCo combo decks she helps you slow down the opponent a turn to get the combo off. Though she does take up an important slot(s) in the deck.

She also really helps push through damage, mitigating top decked blockers or Lingering Souls.

I think she will help Hatebears more than DnT but it's awesome to get some new cards that are obviously powerful.

@HugeElfBoy Thanks for that awesome post with a listing of all the deck variations. Awesome to see them all in a row like that. Great to compare the cards, it helps give insight into the archetype as a whole.

One question it raises for me is strategy around TEctonic Edge and Ghost Quarter. This is the best Ghost Quarter deck in the format and Tec Edge is no slouch either. There are just a few matches where you want to crack your GQ's often and early: Infect & Tron. Most of the time it's better to keep them as mana, unless you have Arbiter out and then it's a tougher call. In the non-Infect, non=Tron matches how to people sequence using their Tec Edge/Ghost Quarters? I can't think of any deck in the format that is running both, it's one of the unique aspects of the deck that seems very strong, added in Path to Exile and we're stripping their maindeck of basics rather quickly. It begs the question if it's better to save your Ghost Quarters for their actual basics since Tec Edge cannot hit them.

@VidarThor: I think if you want to make your mid-game better you cut Vials and run 4x Oath of Nissa. It's a great engine with FlickerWisp, it also has strong synergy with Matter REshaper if you're into that one. Oath also helps you dig for those all powerful lands: Eldrazi Temple, GQ and Tec Edge.

#Lazy_Cake: Worship is not multi-coloured so I can't fetch it with Wish so sadly that is not an option. Can't beat all cards all the time so if I loose my Worships to those effects...thems the breaks. Cards like Bow of Nylea could tuck them back in but that's corner, corner, corner case. Thanks for the thought and consideration though!

I've been working on a new brew using those Green Mana Pips and Trolls!

    http://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/troll-worship-wish-grind/

It's a Troll/Worship deck that's trying to take advantage of Nykthos mana due to the staying power of of Troll Ascetic and Thrun, The Last Troll. Rather than try to win on turn 3, I'm trying not to loose and then grind it out from there. Why? Because I think this strategy is very resilient to many, many strategies in the meta. I can quite easily get a turn 3 Worship online with either a Troll Ascetic or a Sylvan Caryatid on board. I will have lots of play in any match I play and I do not expose my mana-rampers to removal, except for 2 Arbor Elf which are a nod to how many 3 drops I have. I do believe I'm currently a bit soft to Discard effects and possibly Tron too. But man oh man...those Troll Ascetics and Thrun are SUCH a beating against all the fair decks and Cavern of Souls makes them a nightmare for control decks. Pumping them via Nissa, VOZ, Ajani, Mentor of Heroes and Gavony Township is very satisfying.

I have 2 Tutor avenues, lands via Knight of the Reliquary and Glittering Wish. Best wish targets are Clan Defiance, Gaddock Teeg, Glare of Subdual and Firespout.

There is only currently 1 Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx in the deck because I'd really like to run Ghost Quarters. But I can search it up with Knight most games.

For those of you who like more interaction and less 'all-in' style decks this might be a fresh take on Devotion for ya!

Not sure if those Path to Exile should be some mix of Dromoka's Command, Beast Within and Bonfire of the Damned.

@creamgravy: How often do you turn Delirium on for Traverse? It seems like it wouldn't happen too often...Maybe more Courser of Kruphix or possibly some Bow of Nylea or Expedition Map or something?

I have yet another take on Troll Worship. No Blue. Going more toolboxy with Glittering Wish. Big Mana comes from Nykthos for those big spells in the board (Clan Defiance is a great toolbox card). Glare of Subdual is amazing with Nissa, Voice of Zendikar for solving some tough problems (Tooth and Nail: Emrakul (tap down Emrakul forever)) as well as getting damage through to win the game.

@CurdBros: Great to see where the Walker build is at. Can you explain the removal of Nissa, Voice of Zendikar and Xenagos, The Reveler? And the move to Karn/Worldwaker?

Would also be great to see a SB because I imagine your game 2 is quite different than your game 1 against many decks.

Has much work been done to see if Traverse the Ulvenwald could fit into this archetype? It appears to be a good contender.

The first Traverse might just be 1 poorly spent mana but mid-game and onward I suspect it is turned on and with mana to abuse it. I see it replacing Summoner's Pact. Traverse opens up the toolbox very, very wide. The guy I want to try is Eldrazi Displacer (+ Eternal Witness) but that's just me, I'm sure there are better options. The stretch to make Traverse work would have to be worth it, hopefully shoring up some missing pieces of the strategy to date. If it gets us removal and more interaction it's probably worth it.

Most of the lists here run:
4-8+ Enchantments with Oath of Nissa, Utopia Sprawl and additional enchantments in the form of Courser of Kruphix.

Planeswalkers: 4-9+ Planeswalkers with Nissa, Voice of Zendikar, Garruk Wildspeaker and Xenagos, The Reveler. Nissa in particular hits the bin quite quickly.

Land: 6+ Fetchlands and could be more.

Creatures: Infinite. Having your Birds or Arbor Elf get bolted doesn't feel so bad anymore Smile Burning-Tree Emissary bites it? Ok! Qasali Pridemage is a good one here I expect.

Artifacts...not so much. Maybe a 1-of Spellskite? Silent Arbiter is great against swarm decks and doesn't hinder us much with Kessig, Wolf Run.

Sorcery: Bonfire, Traverse itself, Primal Command, G-Wave, etc.

Instant: Probably not but possibly Lightning Bolt, Path or Dromoka's Command.

    Has anyone tried it?

@werdwood93: You should try 1-of Groundbreaker to go with the Woodland Bellower

Good reading the last few pages, lots of good discussion are great points. This is a group of dedicated players supporting each other and critically thinking about their strategies - amazing!

I really like to play White and so I'd like to mention a few white cards I've been playing with - albeit in a non-devotion deck but one that still is using 6x Dorks, Garruk, Nissa 3.0 and Oath of Nissa.

Knight of the Reliquary: In the important 3 drop slot you get a (3/3) usually if you're playing Fetches on Turn 2. Turn 3 and onwards she is often out of bolt range and has massive utility for a deck who's namesake, Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx, can be easily fetched up. Playing her allows you to play less copies of Nykthos itself and maybe stretch to play some other great lands like Boseiju, Who Shelters All and Ghost Quarter. Boseiju can do a lot of work against the tough permission decks alongside Primal Command. You can go deep on Knight if you want: Arena

Voice of Resurgence: It's not Strangleroot Geist or Burning-Tree Emissary in terms of aggression/explosiveness but it is disruptive and powerful. It helps against the permission decks, is a resilient threat and it synergies well with Nissa 3.0 and the mana dorks. Why? Because the Elemental token you get from Voice gets pretty big pretty quick, providing an honest threat. It's also a great Planeswalker protector similar to Geist. Downside, one less G in it's cost and that pesky W can be tough on turn 2 without attending to your mana-base.

Summoner's Trap: Seems like a real beating with 4x Titan and Craterhoof in the deck. Spell Snare getting you down? Turn 2 Primeval Titan for the win.

A note about Nissa, Voice of Zendikar: I played with her for the first time the other week and was really happy with her. Those 0/1s and mana dorks become threatening pretty fast with +1/+1 counters and Garruk's -4 in the wings.

Theory: It seems to be that traditionally Magic players will decide a card is good or bad based on how powerful just that single card is in a vacuum. Take Snapcaster Mage, Lightning Bolt, Path to Exile, Liliana of the Veil as examples. Considered premiere cards in Modern. They are great because they are so useful on their own in pretty much any situation. When we look at decks like Mono-G or decks like Hatebears for instance we find cards that are less than good using the thinking that calls Snapcaster Mage a 'good card:' Burning-Tree Emissary, Arbor Elf, etc. What I have discovered - as a player who loves this archetype (and Hatebears) - is that the cards in these decks are mediocre on their own but are powerful in any combination. They are synergistic cards and so it is unfair to evaluate them based on raw, single-card, context-free, thinking. Obviously Hatebears and Devotion decks are not terrible, they can win against anything and can out maneuver even the 'best' cards in the format. When building my decks now it has been helpful to have this level of clarity in card evaluation. I'm becoming more clear about why a certain card is good or bad given context, given synergy and not simply relying on the traditional power evaluations we normally attach to cards. This is not new information by any means but when you discover something for yourself it has it's own power that is far beyond simply inheriting status-quo knowledge. Hopefully in my way of talking about it there is some value for others.

Wondering if some seasoned Hatebears players would care to look at this Hatebears inspired brew. It's in the wheelhouse of GW mid-range strategies so I figure folks here might have some good criticism to offer. It's GW Midrange with Glare of Subdual and a hateful sideboard.

  • posted a message on HateGlare - GW Control/Mid-Range deck fighting fair with Glare of Subdual
Building with all my favorite Green and White cards, including Glare of Subdual. This is an incredible card that can play defensively or offensively but still hasn't made the grade in Modern. There are enough tools in the Selesnya colours to have a fighting chance against anything Glare doesn't solve but if it's up to having a fighting chance at a competitive FNM is an open question. This is what I've brewed up as a GW control concept:

Deck can also be found here: http://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/selesnya-glare-control/

The basic concept is to create a big board presence and lock them out of combat with Glare, pumping your team as you go. The deck can go big by pumping (through exalted, +1/+1 counters and Elspeth) or wide with token swarm. Oath of Nissa is an important card that smooths your game out mana wise and gives better access to your SB creature 1-ofs. This is an inherently fair deck in a fairly unfair format and so suffers at the level of core concept. I've aimed at consistency and disruption as two means of balancing the table so fighting 'fair' has a chance.

Auriok Champion, Kitchen Finks, Voice of Resurgence: All hard to kill, resilient bodies. This deck needs to keep bodies on board for Glare of Subdual to remain useful so hard to remove threats are key. Voice in particular works well with the deck as it synergizes with many of the cards in the deck. It gets pumped by Wilt-Leaf Liege, provides an early body to protect planeswalkers, leaves behind a token that can grow very large and helps against one of the decks natural weaknesses - permission spells. I chose to maindeck the full 4 for those reasons. Kitchen Finks is a standard sort of hold the line card that synergizes well with Liege, Nissa's +1/+1 ability and mana dorks. Auriok Champion is amazing. She should gain a lot of life for you between your creatures, token generators and your opponent's creatures. Champion in particular is a brutal card against burn or red based aggro decks. Terrible against Path or Merfolk or a plethora of other decks but can still hang-in there and gain you some life, thus she is in he board.

Scavenging Ooze is needed utility against graveyard decks and helps take advantage of running 6 dorks who inevitably die and then become fodder for Ooze. With the unbanning of Sword of the Meek these 2 slots could/should(?) be Qasali Pridemage. They both deal with the combo in different ways though I think Pridemage is more consistant as he simply destroys the Thopter Foundry. Scooze needs to wait for the Sword to actually be in the yard. Scooze has more application generally though...hard choice.

Wilt-Leaf Liege is a beater. It pumps the team quite a bit and scares opponent's from +1ing Liliana or using non-target discard. Brimaz, King of Oreskos is another beater (that avoids Lightning Bolt) and has strong synergies with Glare - and to a lesser extent with Auriok Champion.

Nissa, Voice of Zendikar. Would really like to see the 3cmc green Planeswalker be useful in Modern. She's not all that impressive really but I'd like to see what is possible with her. 6 mana dorks give a strong chance of her coming down turn 2. Multiples of her are actually great so you can +1, then -2 twice for a big team and then do it all again. She seems like the best way to produce tokens quickly and efficiently both card and mana wise.

Elspeth, Knight Errant keeps Glare working and can help close out the game. She gets the nod over Elspeth, Sun's Champion because 4CMC is a LOT LESS than 6. What about Gideon, Ally of Zendikar? I think Elspeth might be better, could be wrong though. Wondering about Garruk Wildspeaker in her place. He generates 2 mana, which allows a Garruk + Voice/Ooze/Dork or Garruk + Removal mana. Next turn he can threaten the win. He does seem more fragile than Elspeth in general and certainly on an open board.

Glare of Subdual is the card I want to make shine here. Taps down attackers, taps down combo enablers, taps down blockers...I think it's worth building around.

Oath of Nissa helps provide card filtering, needed in a deck like this.

Path to Exile, is a critical staple. I included 2x Dromoka's Command as well to have 6 MD removal cards as well as to help deal with red sweeper effects and problem enchantments like Bitterblossom. These slots could also potentially be Qasali-Pridemage depending on how the meta-game shakes out.

    Mana:
Don't want to leave home without my Ghost Quarters! Playing 2 colours and dorks allows the full 4 to come to bear, Oath of Nissa helps get them when they are needed. Examples are Tron lands, Inkmoth Nexus and Nykthos/Enchanted Lands. Horizon Canopy can be painful but the optional card draw is really nice in GW. Oran-Rief, the Vastwood is just a possibly worse Gavony Township but it's coloured and is cheap to activate, hits most of my guys. If Garruk Wildspeaker is included I would certainly play it.

    Sideboard:
Leyline of Sanctity is a great hoser for discard, burn and again...various combo decks. Hate using 3 board slots but I'm a bit gun shy about not playing it.
Kataki, War's Wage helps against Affinity, Lantern and now Thopter Foundry.
Spellskite comes in against removal heavy decks and Infect, Boggles.
Choke All hail Choke! What a nightmare of a card. Great reason to play green all on its own.
Fracturing Gust against affinity and random enchantment decks...this is FNM after-all. Can wipe out Thopter combo and tokens.
Gaddock Teeg good catch-all against Wrath effects and some combos.
Linvala, Keeper of Silence helps shut down creature combos and slow down Dork decks.
Magus of the Tabernacle helps against swarm decks, Linger Soul decks, Thopter combo decks.
Rest in Peace when you need more powerful GY hate.
Eidolon of Rhetoric storm, spell heavy burn decks, Ancestral Vision.
Auriok Champion great at buying lots of time, great against Jund, burn and many other decks.

Considerations: Sun Titan, Sword of Light and Shadow, Crucible of Worlds, Eternal Witness - would love to have some recursion somewhere.

This is not a budget deck by any means...sorry about that. I just happen to have been playing these cards for many, many years. I'd love any critical suggestions.

Uh...Is this card NUTS or what?

    Cryptolith Rite 1G
    Enchantment
Creature you control have "t: Add one mana of any color to your mana pool."

Seems nuts with Nissa, Voice of Zendikar, Secure the Wastes...any token generator really. Net me some dudes, next turn have explosive mana. Xenagos, the Reveler is reveling. Elspeth, Sun's Champion is sunny. Brewing brain: Overdrive.
