Feb 4, 2014Somadelnocha posted a message on Launch Giveaway! My favorite card has to be Bloodbraid Elf. I started competitively playing just before Shards, and upon seeing Putrid Leech, Blightning, and Sprouting Thrinax, I knew I wanted to be casting Jund-colored spells. Bloodbraid Elf was the gift that always gave more, and I was sad to see her banned in Modern.Posted in: Announcements

It plays out much like an aggro-tempo deck, utilizing cheap interaction for the early game and powerful monsters to dominate the mid-to-late game. Turning the corner has never been so fun.
I really don't get Kiora's Follower over something like Rattleclaw Mystic or Sylvan Caryatid. You don't have Yisan or Nykthos to abuse, so it's a really bad version of Mystic/Caryatid in this deck, with an "upside" of giving a creature pseudo-vigilance, which IMHO is NOT worth the card slot.
On that note: My girlfriend and I have been demolishing people with the obvious GW tokens deck. I will post a list later, but it's got Beastmaster Ascension, Brimaz, King of Oreskos, and Sigil Blessing for the massive blowouts (seriously, everyone dies to that card, almost as much as people die to Wrecking Ogre). Solid, aggressive, flexible. Just the way I like my aggro-midrange decks.

So I've come to realize, I've been coming at it a little incorrectly. We want to board *into* the midrange deck for games 2 and 3, where our "tempo" can shine. In game 1s, we want to just get them dead. This is reflected by the Coursers in the SB, along with most cards costing around 4 to get into play, this means we can be casting giant monsters as early as t3 if we have the Mystic, and on-curve otherwise. The plethora of 3 mana spells gives you a lot of flexibility across the board, both in what order you should play your lands, and how you should approach the game at-hand. Otherwise, 4-mana and up is heavy-hitter territory. Everything above 4 mana will be an attempt to reduce our opponent's life total.
It makes no difference, they are all either too slow, or too low impact to matter.
You want each thing you cast to do SOMETHING relevant, whether it be advance your board, protect your board, or stop your opponent from taking over. That's why I was playing all of the gods that were relevant, and many other spicy bullets to draw into later in the game. Many of these bullets create game-states where an opponent cannot come back from, or it's very difficult to do so.
This sort of threat-dense build allows for flexibility, versus having raw power. The option to go over top of everyone is also present, which is a powerful thing to be working with.
That said, I have been working on a "streamlined" build.

If you're casting Negate, just stop and cast Stubborn Denial instead. I'm 100% serious that Negate is STRICTLY unplayable in this deck if you don't have 4 Stubborn Denial first. Clever Impersonator is easily the worst card in the deck, despite it's power level, so adding an additional one seems awkward. Hornet Queen shouldn't need explanation: if you're keeping Genesis Hydra, but cutting Queen, you're doing it wrong. I've already cut Purphoros as he's slow, and Ashcloud Phoenix is a new addition to my build (in place of Clever Impersonator) that has been stellar.

@trappedinlimbo: The point of having a 1-of is that it's a card that is VERY powerful, but only the first one is ever relevant, meaning you'd NEVER want to draw a second one. If it's forcibly discarded, there was nothing we could do about it anyway (minus Bow + fetchland to hope to draw it again). The reason I'm playing a single Genesis Hydra is because for maximum value, you want to cast it for big, and shouldn't it win you the game if you do? The same holds true for all of the other miser creatures. There's not a "single" card that I'd want to play 4 of, and miss out on playing these VERY strong, slightly situational cards. Sometimes, you just want that Arbor Colossus to be a 6/6 for 5-mana, and that's okay. Other times, you're going to want it because your opponent has cast their second (or third!) Mantis Rider, and you're ready for some payback.
TL;DR: Misers have their place, and their place is being that "undodgeable bullet". Let them fly.
@Master_Gabbin: I agree, Purphoros is actively terrible. I cut him for the 4th Crater's Claws, which is never bad to cast if it's for value. Whether you're wiping a Rabblemaster/Mantis Rider off the board, or even casting it with Ferocious where x=3 to nail a Siege Rhino, it's worth it. As far as sideboarding goes, I can see that the Mindswipes are slow. Not quite the speed we want to go, but I wanted another counter spell, so Disdainful Stroke got the nod for the 3rd. A 3rd Polymorphist's Jest also found it's way in, because we must make sure we draw them if they're going to be GIANT blowouts, no?
Specific sideboarding typically goes like:
R/x Aggro + Jeskai Burn:
+2 Temur Charm
+3 Polymorphist's Jest
+4 Anger of the Gods
-2 Rattleclaw Mystic (they ALWAYS have burn)
-1 Nylea, God of the Hunt
-1 Xenagos, God of Revels
-1 Keranos, God of Storms
-1 Sagu Mauler
-1 Hornet Queen
-1 Genesis Hydra
Some astute readers might notice that we start with 60 in g1, then g2-3, we're at 61. Why? Well, here, our deck is a little slow already, so the extra card might actually come up. The other thing is that we want to keep the wheels churning, rather than getting bogged down, so we cut the most expensive cards, partially because we're also cutting some mana ramp, and the other part because Polymorphist's Jest does all the tricks for us, so we don't have to! Nice Sarkhan +1! Frog.
Abzan Midrange:
+3 Disdainful Stroke (dat Roc+Rhino)
+3 Polymorphist's Jest (dat ERRYTHANG)
-1 Xenagos, God of Revels
-1 Nylea, God of the Hunt
-1 Keranos, God of Storms
-1 Surrak Dragonclaw
That's right, we stay at 61 cards after boarding again! Why?
Well, Abzan Midrange likes the game to go a little longer, so we get the opportunity to "draw the extra card" and have it be relevant, where as before it wasn't even a possibility. with the amount of inherent CA, it's not hard to always dig deeper.
Any other matchups you'd want covered?
Temur Avalanche is a midrange RUG deck that utilizes the inherent card advantage engines of Temur Ascendancy and Courser of Kruphix to build overwhelming board states that our opponents cannot come back from. This deck can hit HARD, and often from out of nowhere. Temur Ascendancy gives us this "surprise" effect, due to the Fires effect. Thought Polukranos was scary already? Imagine it with haste! How about an Arbor Colossus? Even Genesis Hydra?!
A large draw to this form of deck is the idea of tempo, and this deck is actually more of a true tempo deck, in that it sets a pace that an opponent must keep up with, or fall too far behind to recover. This is accomplished with the undercosted Monsters (Polukranos, Stormbreath, and new addition Savage Knuckleblade [Knux, I'd say]) alnogside powerful, inexpensive spells Stubborn Denial, Bow of Nylea, and Crater's Claws. Stubborn Denial is obviously at its best in this sort of build, as a large majority of our creatures have the requiste 4+ power to make this a single-mana Negate (which is strictly better than actual Negate!) Crater's Claws's versatility is not to be denied, answer both Goblin Rabblemaster, Mantis Rider, and any other aggressive deck's starts for very cheap (if Ferocious) or on par (X=2 is only 3 mana), along with being the true Fireball we deserve in the late game, performing much like Rakdos's Return in that regard. All of these provide very powerful angles with which to keep our opponents off-balance - much like Wastelands in Legacy's RUG Delver deck.
Another "cute" feature of this build is that we get to play with some Gods! Everyone on-color except for Thassa and Kruphix are here (And Thassa could make an appearance...), largely because of how much devotion that Temur Ascendancy and all of the creatures provide. That factor alone is why I haven't brought Thassa to the party, as I don't particularly think that Blue creatures are quite where we want to be, at least with the wealth provided us by Red and Green. I've thought about Illusory Angel, but without Elvish Mystic, and a few other 1-cost spells, this is a little far-fetched.
SO! To the decklist!

Simply put, this deck is a blast to play, and you definitely get to blow a lot of people out of the water. I felt like the name Avalanche was two-fold, 1) because the Temur Frontier is a mountain range, and what better way to ambush people than with an avalanche? 2) As a small tribute to the game Final Fantasy VII. If you don't know what the dedication is to, you should probably play that game (or at least read a TL;DP summary somewhere on the internet.)
I can post a SBing guide, if folks might be interested? I felt like the SB is pretty straightforward. Bring in the countermagic where it is good and relevant, Anger against Jeskai/other aggro decks (which is to say, the PT-winning Abzan deck seems DEMOLISHED by Anger, minus those pesky Rhinos and Rocs...) and Mono-Green Devotion [when you play against aggro, make the curve lean, cut all the big fat dumb monsters and useless gods, such as ALWAYS Genesis Hydra and Hornet Queen, and Keranos and Purphoros against Jeskai/burn], and Unravel the Æther is a nice surprise for other enchantments/artifacts, and of course, the real kicker: Polymorphist's Jest.
This card originally started out as Ætherspouts, primarily for the midrange creature mirror. Upon actually reading this card one FNM, I quickly realized *THIS* is the key. 1UU, Instant Humilty YOU?! Ab-solutely in-sanely ab-surd. I haven't looked back since. No one expects it, and MAN is it strong. I've almost brought them into the MD, but the deck seems stronger when all of the creatures can synergize, and it leaves the SB open for stronger, more versatile cards.
Well, give it a whirl, and let me know what you think! Open criticism directly welcomed!
ALSO! If you test this, like it, and play it at Game Day tomorrow/today (depending on where you live), email me a tournament report at amancalledcrazy@gmail.com, and I'll compile all the data to help work this list along!
Crater's Claws should DEFINITELY be here too.

A quick primer, for those that aren't looking: We resolve the standard fare of Mystics for ramp, Courser for lifegain/filtering, Polukranos and Stormbreath for beats. Where the true engine lies is what happens when you resolve a Prophet of Kruphix. Suddenly, EVERY one of our creatures has flash, leaving the window open for ANYTHING to come down in front of our opponents' creatures during combat. It forces the game to a game state where we typically have the upper hand, which is the Temur way, with a capital T.
In sideboarded games, don't be afraid to be at 61 after cuts. This deck will filter through a lot of spells quickly (especially if you get an Ascendancy going).
Mulligan most hands that don't do anything before turn 3.
