How does this design need to be pushed to make it playable in cube? Would you play more positive auras than you currently do if this card (or a more pushed form) existed?
Aura Guy2W Creature - Guy Druid
When ~ enters the battlefield, you may search your library for an aura with enchant creature and converted mana cost less than 3. If you do, reveal it and put it onto the battlefield attached to ~. 1/1
I wanted to build a The Spoils cube, but there aren't really enough cards in the game to build a balanced cube yet. So, if I'm making custom cards for cube maybe I'll borrow some of the game's designs.
I like that card a lot. I don't remember if it needs to specify whether the card is face-up or down, but I am imagining the cards being exiled face-up and liking that design.
Even in control, I like the idea of being like, "Hey, I have a counterspell. You should play around that."
I was thinking you suggestion was that the races should be the allied pairs and the classes should be the enemy pairs (or the other way around).
That way, as an example:
RG as Orcs, RB as Vampires;
RW as Soldiers, UR as Wizards;
If you were building a primarily red deck, You'd be looking for synergy between Goblins, Vampires, Soldiers, and Wizards. Any Goblin/Vampire Soldier/Wizards would be fortunate picks for you, as they'd ideally be able to trigger a more of your tribal interactions.
If you ended up building a UR Wizard deck, you'd incidentally be cutting some of other players' synergies with Goblins, Vampires, and Soldiers, among other things.
And you mentioned archetypes in your results, I was hoping to have that in addition to the tribes. Like, perhaps a sort of Invisible Stalker "Bant Pants" deck is buildable with evasive Merfolk and Birds. Perhaps Zombies and Cleric cards incidentally lend themselves to a Stax or Graveyard Toolbox style deck. I want strategies that are non-tribal to be viable, but for at least some of their all stars to be good picks for tribes as well.
Whereas Intimidate seems like it should trigger off size, not color. Like a 3/3 with intimidate would be unblockable unless the defender was a 3/3 or bigger. Like it's intimidating something of a smaller size. THAT would be intuitive.
But I've never fought a scary blue creature before!
That's a fairly good suggestion. I realized that Boros and Orzhov both have fairly obvious classes more than they do races. (Soldiers and Clerics, duh!) But I feel like the other enemy pairs are a little less clear cut.
Izzet is pretty easily Wizards, but what about Golgari and Simic?
I'm interested in putting together a tribal cube that is supplemented with custom cards, and have some friends who are interested in playing/testing it. Some number of decisions need to be made regarding direction before I can actually get started with the whole project. Right now, I'm fishing for ideas and input to jump into development with.
In this thread, any suggestions regarding a tribal cube are welcome (though, I promise I've read through quite a few older threads and "ancient" Lorwyn articles on the WotC library), but I'll also likely be trying to steer the conversation towards more specific things. You might also find me poking my head into other threads for ideas, like the Print This Wizards (so I can put it in my cube) thread.
In the future, I'll have inserted a spoiler here cataloging the various polls and forms I've created, seeking quantified input. You're welcome to participate, even if they're dated. If you identify yourself (with your name if I personally know you, or your username), I may even follow up with a forum/Facebook message, asking about your input!
In the meantime, I have this Google Form live. Hopefully we can get some discussion about the questions posed in that forum in this very thread!
So: I want to have a race and class "tribe" for every color pair, and have bleeding between most of the colors for all the races and classes. I feel like including so many different tribes will help discourage trying to pick all the elves, which is a trap a lot of tribal cubes fall into. Changelings and color bleeding will help decks utilize their tribal interactions, but I want to fight against the cube falling into the game of cluttered, boring board states.
If I could make everyone in the cube forum give me a reply to this thread, right now, it'd be justifications for their answers to my forum, and discussion about other people's answers they mention in this thread. Help make that happen!
Thanks. (I messaged ExpiredRascals, but I didn't realize there was a custom set forum. I still feel like this thread is relevant to the Cube Forum, but when I actually start drafting the cube's cards, I could do work in the Custom Set Creation forum if that's preferred.)
Last night, I did a Winston draft with a friend's cube draft. The first pack had a lot of red in it and I was towards the middle-end of the pod for picks the first time around. It came to me and I felt like Arc Trail was the safest pick, then the last player in the pod took Char and Staggershock. We ended up wrestling a lot over red cards (where as most of the other players ended up splashing red for their Chandra Nalaars and what have you). Needless to say, I was able to cut the other player taking burn spells fairly hard because I was ahead of him in the pod and I also took a monopoly on the red and white 2-drops.
It came to the point where my opposing aggressive red-playing drafter picked a Sensei's Divining Top over I don't remember what. Still, I was in contention with his decision, claiming "Top isn't that good, Tyler." trying to point out that it doesn't do a whole lot for an aggro deck. Pretty much everyone at the table half-mocked me for my opinion and Tyler was content with his pick.
Later, we ended up being on teams (we did teams of two, doing four round-robin matches and deciding winners based on team-wide scores). Again I advised Tyler not to play Top in his deck, since he was trying to be an aggressive deck with a slightly higher curve than is desirable. He decided to play it anyways because 'it's a good card,' and our teammates agreed with him.
I just remembered to ask him on Facebook what he thought of Top in the deck, but I only saw him using it once and it didn't do what he needed (find Sword of War and Peace for his next turn).
Edit: It's worth noting that every fetch land in Tyler's colors got cut, so I don't think he had any shuffle effects in his deck.
Hey, folks. I posted asking for opinions on custom cards in cubes a while back and was met with a lot of contention. Nevertheless, most of my local friends/players seem pretty enthusiastic (even ones who previously showed no interest in cube) about playing with a tribal cube featuring custom cards.
As such, I'm hoping to get the project rolling. I'm wanting to be able to share progress and hold discussion with, as well as receive input from said players/friends. Does anyone have a good platform for this sort of project? One where I can share formatted text and images with people and have them able to easily participate in discussion about it?
I'm vaguely familiar with blogging from previous projects, but I feel like there ought to be something more apt to this. Perhaps even something closer to CubeTutor where I could make my own mouse-over images for text. Polling features would be very useful, but I can always outsource that to StrawPoll or something.
And, if you'd like to give your own input on a custom tribal cube, let me know! I'll probably ask for input here every now and again, but I can link you to the project (once I have it hosted somewhere) if you want to keep updated.
I remember there was a cube somewhere where a guy would pit little stickers that said "Rebel" on some of the creatures in his cube, to interact with other rebels like Amrou Scout.
The results were, I think, "That is really cool and exciting, but it's a little frustrating until you learn what to expect."
Dunno if that adds anything here, I got reminded of it thinking about Humpty_Dumpty's suggestion.

Shared Triumph is actually one of the reasons I want to build a tribal cube.
The spoiler box in the OP of that thread isn't working for me.
Edit: Thanks Mister Lamp, that did it!
