Someone mentioned that it would make more sense for the Obelisk to cost 5, since then it would be like using all 5 colors to ask the Obelisk.
But what if there is Barry's Land? Doesn't that allow Conflux to have 6 basics (probably some kind of converged land from the various shards), which would make the Obelisk fit more flavorly at a 6 cost...
is totally characterful in conflux dude....because barry's land is going to be all up in there.
i have deep love in my heart for barry's land. i hope it's in there. i can see why it's a horrible rules headache though. it counts as a basic land but how could it count as a 6th basic land...the entire process of "counting" a basic land is based on identifying the land as a specific type like swamp or forest. so if barry's land is in there it would have to have some sort of type like that and that presents a problem. do you make a basic land type that taps for colorless mana? is it implied any time that land type is on a card that it taps for colorless? that's kind of weird and it would be a drastic addition to the game that would probably never be used again (or only when domain comes back). but they've done some crazy things so maybe they'll do it.
the 5 life gain and red direct damage make obelisk of alara less depressing. i just wish it were a lot more elegant. i was really hoping for something like 4, T: Add WUBRG to your mana pool...except more interesting than that. but same basic idea.
yeah the card is pretty depressing. i'm hoping it's a fake. for that much you should at least get an untap, the blue should be straight draw, the white should be more life. or something creature oriented like "target creature gets lifelink" or something.
some of these are ludicrous but i like them. primal weird is my favorite, and i think you need to clarify the blue ability: as written it seems to suggest you draw a single card and then discard cards equal to the number of blue you spent.
...i remember a talk about tarmogoyf and morphling being mythic caliber.
do you mean you with some of your friends or somewhere on the site or from an established/famous player? i'm just wondering, because to me tarmogoyf is not at all mythic in any way (i get why you'd say morphling though). i don't remember which article it was but maro basically said, no we will not make chase rares mythic, they will be legends and really splashy exciting cards (in many cases timmy cards, in my opinion). Tarmogoyf is not a legend, he's not a character in storyline, he's not splashy or exciting, and timmy would trade a tarmogoyf playset for a single godsire. obviously there's going to be some overlap, but no one can argue that sarkhan vol isn't splashy or exciting or timmy. tarmogoyf is good because of mathematical efficiency, and that's all there is to him. none of the mythic rares we've seen so far can be described that way.
and to put in my two cents, i can't argue about the bantiness of Gwafa Hazid's name, and the profiteer thing screams JHESSIAN PIRATE, but with the connection that maro and others have made between black and capitalism i think there's a decent possibility that there will be some black involved. or maybe i just hope there is
EDIT: oh, and Kranioceros has got to have some blue in it. cranio what? latin roots. seriously.
it certainly makes logical sense, and it makes any card using that sort of idea easier to understand, but i always like to read the most precise and technical version of a rule or concept when i'm unsure about it. i think you're probably right though, the idea your card is using hasn't really been done so there's no specific rule referring to "counting cards drawn" or whatever.
Essentially, you need to have an effect that remembers it. Otherwise, the game isn't counting the cards drawn itself, y'know?
It probably would be balanced, even if it counted the cards you drew before pulling the plug (read: cutting) but I don't really want to compromise the elegance, albeit more narrow use.
so like, putting counters on it for each card drawn, that sort of thing? that makes sense but is there a specific rule in the handbook that refers to this idea? i'm just wondering.
i really like brain stem cutter and i agree with UmbrellaExile.
edit: maybe i should specify what i agree about...the idea of drawing 4 and winning because the opponent has 4 or less life, but not basically winning from drawing 2 cards twice or 4 cards separately one at a time.
maybe,
Whenever a single spell or ability would cause you to draw cards greater than or equal to an opponent's life total, that opponent loses the game.
oh also i am confused about "counting" how many cards are drawn...why can't a card refer to the number of cards drawn?
gravity's rainbow is flavorwise very interesting, and i initially liked it a lot, as it feels very green and black. it does not, however, feel very green, which it has the possibility of being as a hybrid card. since it costs XCC you might as well make it XBG, because i think that would solve the problem. i like some of the other cards too but gravity's rainbow is the most exciting one i see here in terms of covering new ground in an elegant way. i love simple and logical combinations of color philosophy i haven't seen yet like that.
you're right about ancient protector...not sure how to fix it.
devouring swarm has been simplified.
i'm actually not crazy about the flectomancer or the hypnotist either, but i wanted to mess around with a full cycle of 4 color cards so i made them.
the one i like the most is the firebrand but i really have no idea what kind of power level it has...should it be weakened, strengthened, should it be simplified?
the idea was to make a 4 color card that made sense to be in 4 colors, and i'm wondering how these fared in that sense to other people, or if people don't think it's a great idea in the first place.
Magic only has 5 creatures with a mana cost of 4 different colored mana...the nephilim. i've always thought they weren't very good as the sole examples of 4 color combinations... for instance, the dune-brood (BRGW) could really just be a green creature, the glint-eye (UBRG) could easily be blue/black, and the ink-treader (RGWU) should just be blue/red. I haven't yet decided if 4 color cards are impossible to execute well, or just difficult to execute well, but i designed a set of 5 of my own. i tried to make them as simple as possible but most of them are really too complicated. i'm interested to see what other people think and i'm really interested to see if other people have designed 4 color cards. if there's a post about this or a post of other people's 4 color designs, please point me to it.
