Each opponent discards his or her hand. Opponents cannot draw cards. (This doesn't end at end of turn.)
This makes up an ability that would make Nicol VERY happy, only the most tricky of mages could circumvent this and as long as you keep him in play you win.
This is something along the lines of what I was thinking, but his ultimate should be "For the rest of the game..." like Elspeth, Knight-Errant.
I read someone else suggest "For the rest of the game, opponent's maximum hand size is 0." I kinda like that. It's very simple and forces discard at the end of every turn, for the nod to the original.
However, it appears Nicol Bolas has ultimate abilities, so maybe this is all way off base or maybe there is something else devastating that can be done for the rest of the game.
Oh well, Wizards succeed in getting me jazzed up about this card. I'll be buying Conflux boosters....
The list may have had the entire correct shards list, but that list must have been final (as in, all stages of the design & development were complete). The meglonoth name may haven't been finalized.
Are you saying that the Shards of Alara cards on the list were final, but the Conflux names may not have been? I don't believe that. When the list was initially put up, there was an insightful post in the [CON] Complete Conflux Card List (Names) thread by pandafarmer, stating that at the time Shards was released, Conflux was at the printers and Alara Rebron was in the final stages (thus why it can take 2 sets for sollutions/answers to appear)
Or guys, this could have been another stupid mistake on Wizard's part. They could have lifted the name from any number of other lists- hell, Megaloth could be a scraped creature name from Alpha.
I doubt they would produce promotional material and not catch such a glaring mistake, but it is possible it is also an older abandoned name/card. If that is the case it may be just waiting for a set to reappear in. Perhaps that means it's Meglonoth's time for Alara Reborn, since it would be strange to put the name out there and the print it in another block.
Or, it could be an effort on wizard's part to discredit the list without acknowldging it.
I don't think they'd try to discredit the list, per se, with such little time left before the release, but I do think Meglonoth was intentially put there for those of us who have been spoiled. Perhaps it's just something to keep us occupied. After all, their "big surprise" of Nicol Bolas was let out of the bag with all the other names, so now teases can only be artwork and the mysterious Meglonoth.
Paleoloth Is on the Cardlist, However. as some people said above, there is posibility that it could have been mis-translated.
There is the entire Possibility that Paleoloth IS the Wrong name and it is meant to be Meglonoth. both sound suspiciously like some sort of primeval dinosaur type creature, so they will both be a "Beast".
It also sounds suspiciously like Mycoloth, so I don't think that Paleoloth has to be Meglonoth.
The mistranslation argument is not valid. How would this word be mistranslated? Paleoloth was listed as パレオロス on the list, it's just a phonetic spelling (pareorosu). There's no confusion as it being Megnoloth, which would be メグロノス. There's no way in either English or Japanese one can mistype one for the other.
The Shards list was 100% and everything confirmed thus far is 100%. When that poster was made the name Megnoloth was intentionally put there, and my question is why? Future card or a fake (or maybe better put as a red herring, per NightfallGemini).
i misread. i think it could be in Alara Reborn, but it's more likely that another card was improperly translated.
I don't buy this argument. The list also contained the complete Shards list before it was completely spoiled and it was 100% accurate. So far everything matches the Conflux list perfectly.
Additionally, Meglonoth is not a real word and would be written phonetically in Japanese making a "mistranslation" something fairly easy to spot on the list. There's nothing on the list to suggest this.
I don't know if they would just put a blatantly fake name on the poster, I imagine they go through some kind of process to ensure that names are not copyrighted already, but the name makes me think they were winking at those of us who have read the Conflux card list.
Since the correct names revealed for the Conflux Art Poster at Worlds confirm that Meglonoth, the one name not on the Conflux card list, is indeed not a Conflux card, do you think it could be a name of an upcoming card in Alara Reborn?
The rules on the main page seem to be a little out of date.
It's no big deal since the link is posted right there, but it's worth noting that there are no longer Card Specific Rules and subsequently Karakas and Riftsweeper have been banned.
Sure, the artworks shown in the announcement don't necessarily have to belong to the "Deck Generals," they may be just some newly commisioned arts for other cards in the decks (after all, the artwork shown in the announcement of Duel Decks: Jace vs. Chandra also wasn't from the new Jace Beleren card as we originally thought - it was from Counterspell), but I hope at least the Akroma card is truly for her new card.
Akroma pretty much as to be in the deck, anything else would be like printing that new Counterspell art and not printing Jace in the deck. In addition, I can't see her as the shiny foil in the packaging window without new art. The art in the banner released looks like it would be from a creature card, it doesn't appear "action-y" enough to be a instant or sorcery.
First I would love to see your source for Wizards wanting a walker for each shard because I have read that a lot of people here think that there should be a walker for each shard. But I dont remember wizards ever saying it.
I think RobiNightwing was referring to the Shards of Alara Player's Guide that comes with the fat pack. On page 3, titled "Common Bonds," it lists what is the same for each shard, such as Ultimatums, Heralds, Charms, and Planeswalkers. Under Planeswalkers it states, "Each shard has a patron planeswalker that...hold on, where's the Grixis one? Hmmmm...."
So there you have it. Each shard has a "patron planeswlker" and the missing one in Shards sets up Nicol Bolas to be the Grixis one for Conflux.
this isn't nichol bolas!
it might be the art for his new card but it just isn't him!
nichol bolas is a wise old dragon who happens to delight in ripping minds to shreds, not an ugly young beast who fights with brute strength and has no real intelegence, which is what this art depicts. I could accept FTV bolas as an alternate art depicting a dumb, pre-planeswalker bolas but making it his real look even post spark just isn't right!
I understand the sentiment. I'm one who likes the original depiction from Legends. He was in the last pack I opened of the 14 Legends boosters I was able to scrounge up back in the day and the card was quite mind blowing at the time.
From the original fatpack art, I was a bit afraid that Bolas was going to look like a Planar Chaos dragon, but I do like the armor and such. I think it does show a change from the FTV incarnation, so it's not as bad as I feared. If it can't be old-school, it's still not a bad depiction and, aside from being Bolas, looks cool.
Of course, I'd love to see Nicol slamming the other walkers in his big book like a butterfly collection!
As it has already been established, a creature doesn't need to be legendary to be Mythic. It just has to be flashy.
I agree with other posters that Reiver Demon fits.
I don't know why I keep thinking the "flashy" shard creatures are legendary, even though I really know they aren't (maybe because it usually doesn't take until the second Hellkite Overlord to hit before the game is over).
OK, I take back what I said about how Reiver Demon can't be mythic.
Secondly, her picture is in the advertisement. I'm pretty sure you can't do that and then not include her in the product. At least not unless you want to alienate your entire consumer base.
I agree. While there may be new alternate artwork for other spells depicting Akroma, like in JvC, they can't do that without actually including Akroma. Makes sense that she would be the mythic rare foil.
I will admit that I was puzzled at first because I remembered this article about Jace vs Chandra explaining that Guma and Narwhal were taken out because they found they were "invincible, unstoppable clocks." But I guess white and black have better answers than red or blue for dealing with such creatures and they must have done enough playtesting to see that it works and is fun.
I'm not so sure about Reiver Demon being the mythic rare, simply because all mythic rare creatures have been Legendary Creatures and it was stated that the Mythic slot would be used for Legends, Planeswalkers, and "Epic" spells. I think the card is cool and might be good for this deck, but not the new foil.
I wouldn't even say for certain that the revealed demon artwork is the the new foil artwork (although it may well be because of the way it's juxtaposed with Akroma in the banner) because, correct me if I'm wrong, the first new "Jace" artwork we saw was for Counterspell not the actual Planeswalker card.
My first reaction was that the artwork was Lord of the Pit. Not a match for Akroma, but an iconic creature for Magic (and I didn't much care for the 10th Ed artwork either, so here's hoping) which like Reiver Demon, I don't see as being printed at mythic.
I think that the dragon is Malfegor. Yes he is slim like the FTV Bolas but Bolas is green from what I have seen and the dragon we are looking at seems to be black to me. The other thing that has me thinking it is Malfegor is the gem in between his horns. I don't remember reading anything about Bolas having a feature like that. Also it could be a way to show that Malfegor is both dragon and demon.
You make some good points and I'm really not sure if this is Bolas. The dragon does look black and that gem is a little strange too, but I don't see any additional appendages like has been described for Malfegor.
I don't know if we should be using the FTV appearance as evidence either way as it was stated in the Sneak Peek article:
"This project gave us the opportunity to give the old coot a face-lift, and D. Alexander Gregory's version gives us a glimpse at a younger, svelter, pre-planeswalker-spark Nicol Bolas, one who looks like he works out at the gym after a hard day of charring souls and crushing cities."
I came away with that to mean that the old Bolas art depicted what he looks like as a planeswalker. In the Time Spiral books Bolas is described like he looks on his Legends card too.
This all may be moot, as Bolas can appear pretty much anyway he wants too!

Yes, that's put to rest. Now we just have wait to see if it will be future card for Alara Reborn or if it's just a fake.
There was an article about Jace vs Chandra explaining that Guma and Narwhal were initially play tested, but were taken out.
No hosers, eh? Nope.
Might that be Malfegor?
EDIT- AlphaSquirrel you beat me to it, but I'm with you!
