Is it wrong that I'm kind of hoping for Ornithopter to make it into the Kaladesh Inventions?
On a side note, those basic lands look like we've landed in the Wonderful World of Oz

Teysa_Karlov posted a message on The death of turn 1 accelerators when Elvish Mystic rotatesPosted in: New Card DiscussionQuote from enollava »I hope wizards ends the policy of "too good for standard." It is a vicious cycle. Now that green is slower in mana, something else will take advantage of it. I won't be shocked if it is something we hold dear. 2 mana burn for 3 may next get the axe unless it burns you too. 3 mana counterspells may now require you to discard. The next O ring maybe 4 mana. Black may no longer get any 2 mana kill spells. With this next notch out of what is OK for standard, what will the next thing be that now is too good with dorks gone? At least I can still play legacy, and I will still enjoy my Holiday Cube.
Ah, the end of the life cycle of the standard player.
Birth: This game looks really cool!
Adult: I have a good deck and playing in tournaments!
Old Age: These new cards are stupid compared to the old ones!
Death: Screw standard, I'm going to Legacy or Modern where unique individuals like me can play real Magic!

Jivanmukta posted a message on Uncharted Realms DiscussionsPosted in: Magic StorylineQuote from TerrorKingA »Quote from Jivanmukta »TerrorKingA you should read some of the Pre-Neowalker stuff. I wouldn't call anything after block novels "old" novels.
After the whole Elder Dragon thing, not even old novels are safe. I'll stick to using the wiki for those.
Meh, I just can't stand knowing that new players will be left to think that Quest for Karn, Teeth of Akoum, and the majority of UR are the best magic has to offer.
It's just a shame. -

jimbar posted a message on No Modern Masters 2 Second WaveMan.... you can't please you people. We get mad because price get crazy for singles, so wotc prints more. But, then there isn't enough. Rage. So wotc does it again, but this time the set isn't good enough for the ungrateful magic players. All you people do is whine about how wotc is ruining the game. Yet you still dump your wallet on the counter whenever the new "garbage" set comes out. Quit whining, or quit buying. Most magic sets suck from a value standpointPosted in: The Rumor Mill -

Dire Wombat posted a message on The Problem with the Tarkir TimelinesWhen people say that the time travel element of Tarkir's storyline was "sloppily handled" or "didn't make sense", they're really saying one of two things:Posted in: Magic Storyline
1) "I have an axe to grind" (With Magic, the creative team, this block, whatever)
or
2) "I don't like time travel stories"
Time travel is inherently illogical:
- Changing the past of your own timeline? Intrinsically paradoxical.
- Creating a branching timeline? Still no, for lots of reasons. How does the universe know to send you "back" to the new, branched timeline? Is there another you already there? If not, we're back to the inherent paradox in altering your past from the above case. If only time travelers "create" timelines, why is that? If, rather, the various timelines all exist in a multiverse of infinite possible timelines, why bother going to the past at all, since your time machine can evidently send you to the "present" in the timeline of your choice when you're done. The actual time travel ends up being either nonsensical or pointless.
- Time travel creates closed loops, with any "changes" you make turning out to have been "predestined" already? This... is actually a lot closer to making sense than the other options. But it only works for a relatively narrow set of stories, and it's not totally free of problems. (What mechanism ensures that all attempts to kill Hitler are doomed to fail, even if lots of time travelers try really hard? If I have a baseball that was given to me in 2005 by my future self from 2055, where did the baseball come from, and haven't I violated conservation of mass?)
Look. I actually love time travel stories. Even really stupid ones like Timecop usually manage to get a smile out of me. But anyone who thinks there are a bunch of time travel stories out there that are masterpieces of airtight logic is kidding themselves. There are relatively few that aren't patently ridiculous, and I'm not convinced there are any that completely hold up. But that's not really the point.
The point of time travel is as a narrative tool. It's meant to show character growth, or the value of seeing a new perspective, or the potential for small changes to make a big difference, or some other narrative function. Sometimes, it's used for a mystery story, where the time travel elements create an intricate puzzle of mis-ordered cause and effect for the audience/reader to unravel. For those latter stories, specifically, to work they need to have clear, consistent rules, and a sense of being logical... but that's not the same as saying they actual conform to real-world logic, because they're not going to.
If those are the only kind of time travel stories you like, then that's fine; everyone is entitled to their tastes. But I think it's misguided to pretend that those stories are logical and others, ones that aren't trying to do that (Back to the Future, A Sound of Thunder, Khans of Tarkir), are "sloppy". Neither sort really holds up logically; it's just that one is using time travel as a device to tell a mystery story and the other is using the same device to tell some other sort of story, and those stories have different needs. -

cryogen posted a message on Those TopCommander Facebook guysPosted in: Commander (EDH)Quote from sH0opdAwoOp »
I suppose it is. It kind of appeals to me, though, because at the end of the day what I really want to know about EDH is basically, "What deck would give me the best opportunity to win at any table full of unknown opponents packing unknown decks."
5c Druid deck. Statistically speaking, if you go into a table of unknown players, those players will more often than not be more aligned with the spirit of the format and unprepared for what you bring to the table. So I can most likely safely drop a T2 Druid and win on the spot.
The real question is, why would you want to? What satisfaction do you get out of being able to point a gun at someone who came prepared for a sword fight? -
