Looks great in Krenko and Hazezon Tamar EDH. Basically gives all your 1/1's unblockable or +1/+1, when attacking, with some swingback when blocking. Plus it helps do that last bit of damage to remaining player(s) after I kill one opponent (without having to untap or play relentless assault/etc...).
Not as good as beastmaster's ascension but serves a different purposes. And helps me swing through crap like Moat.
Which for some people, is enough. But I think we're really foolish thinking there won't be other goodies in there. Think of cards that likely CAN'T see the light of day in reprinted form otherwise, like Bloodbraid Elf or even Progenitus...
This entire set is reprints. They really don't have a lot to screw up here unless they already plan to do MM2 and use some things there to even it out.
I think its funny the two examples you chosen have both been reprinted. Progenitus in a FTV and Bloodbraid elf as both a promo and in one of those summer multiplayer variant starter decks (I think commander).
No problem. I understand your complaints but I think they will not change that so soon.
You have to think about that Magic is still at his heart a trading card game. The story plays only a secondary role in this. The Franchise isnt that spread out. There are a few books but thats about it. The games also care only about the actual card game. There is no action adventure where you play as Chandra or Jace or Liliana and progress through the story fighting enemys, solving puzzles and so on even though a lot of people would probably like it, myself included.
I think Wizards dont want to stray from their path and transform Magic to a mega franchise with games, movies, books and all that. They just want to keep the card game healthy.
Also how many trading card games do you even know which have a somewhat decent story?
Yu-Gi-Oh is probably the biggest one besides Magic but I dont have to tell you on what level the story of Yu-Gi-Oh is.
tl;dr: Dont be so mad at Wizard for treating the Story only secondary. Magic is still a trading card game, not a mega franchise.
The consistently third largest TCG, legend of the five rings, is almost entirely story based. People make storyline votes (or, at large events, decisions) that affect the meta-game of the story and change how the game is played. It has a very rich and vibrant story behind it and isn't exactly a "mega-franchise". Its just a TCG, RPG and occasional board game. Like how Magic is a TCG with at least two video games.
...actually it can be argued given how much more drafting is done in Magic that its almost like two card games.
No I just hate what they're doing with orzhov. Seriously, why does extort have to be spells you cast? It would make more sense if it was spells your opponent casts.
Oh yeah because cards that rely on what your opponent does are much better...oh wait.
Extort is pretty cool. Makes me see why the almost-shrieking-drake-functional-reprint we got in Return to Ravnica (or was it M13?) wasn't able to bounce himself.
I'd personally rather have the wrath destroy any two of like Austere command...Creatures, Planeswalkers, Artifacts, Enchantments...I mean it would be slightly better than Austere for certain decks (i.e. non-swarm), but it'd have that black mana symbol...
The gate idea would be nuts on a land with Scapeshift...I know we already have Valakut + 7 mountains...but still!
This. Sure they coulda zoomed in on the art to make something pop but didnt cause they wanted let you know that this guy is the runt of the litter. just your average (not so average) little guy.
Zooming in doesn't mean your huge. In fact, the largest things have to be shown proportionally smaller. See: Nicol Bolas compared to Jace the Mindsculptor. That being said, there's no reason he couldn't even be a giant planeswalker (unlikely due to proportions on his body). Small loyalty doesn't mean weak defenses, after all. It just means he's less...loyal.
if you have never been in PBM graphics and have any idea how they print or run an operation one guy will work on a machine all day watching foils being printed not knowing what the hell they are really and taking some home thinking foils are worth more than non foils trying to make a few extra $$
One guy would not risk his career and the legal implications of what he was doing to do this. On the career side, this would cost the manufacturer their contract and the individual his job. On the legal side, you better believe you can't take copyrighted materials from a client you've signed an NDA with and pocket them home.
Heck, Wizards has fired employees for such misconduct with the (limited) printing capabilities they (had?). Upperdeck lost the rights to Yu-Gi-Oh! over something similar too...
EIGHT WORDS you should know before you open your mouth. Tarm is viable in only a few decks.
It is not viable in my combo elf deck. Turn 3 or 4 my elves will get infinitely huge and laugh at tarmogoyf while hardcasting emrakul. Need I say more? Fine, I will..
There's a few different white decks that don't use tarmogoyf,
mono black is highly viable in modern.
rdw will use figure of destiny before it smirks at the tarmogoyf.
Oh, and there's Abrupt Decay and Dreadbore for Tarmogoyf and friends. Not only that there's pithing needles, path to exiles, and so many other things...
Tarmogoyf at his best is marginally better than a craw wurm and requires a lot of support to get even there. Where a combo elf deck that costs less than a tarmy can be about 5-10 times stronger. So yeah, Tarm is tough, but he's not the be all or end all and not even required to play.
Good day.
Ah pithing needle. Stops tarmogoyf dead in his tracks.
"It dies to removal" is not a viable argument. Otherwise I could just rebuttal the removal with "but your removal loses to Kira."
Even in a FNM Modern event people can still bring their Tier 1 Type 2 deck to the battle... but how hard is to beat a Semi-Competitive Modern deck with an Standard deck?
Depends on the deck, the players and the standard. I have a bounce-mill deck that was standard legal at one point that can take on a lot of them...
Oh and I predict the land will be the prerelease card for Dragon's Maze.
Hey...
I'd kill for a set full of teriese nielson style planescape art.
This is just your standard digital illustration...

You mean bad in the plot? Because the Fey were the bad guys in Lorwyn and they got Bitterblossom, Oona, Thoughtseize...
A land that wins you the game if you control 10 gates.

That was the joke. It was satire.

I chuckled.
I liked the news before I read this and remembered the modern set. Almost made me dream of Legacy FNM.
Stasis versus Helix Pinnacle
Will the power of Chronatog+Rootmaze+Stasis mill beat Helix Pinnacle + Forsaken City?!
