Pelakka Wurm was a reasonable fatty not that long ago, and this is way better. It’s probably better than Avenger of Zendikar. An argument could be made for this over Terastodon as well. Hornet Queen and Woodfall Primus seem a lot better than this though.
I probably have room for both this and Baleful Mastery at 720, but these two cards definitely compete for a slot. Curious what people think about that comparison. This card has tremendous upside - I think I like it more.
My group tested this archetype / package quite a bit on MTGO over the pst couple weeks, and I also watched several CalebD streams of strong Depths and Field of the Dead decks. I think it’s much better than it used to be, and we’re excited to support it moving forward.
FWIW this really over performed my expectations in monoW in the vintage cube. I think it’s worse than adeline but better than brimaz.
Interesting, I’ll revisit this card. Not sure if this card reads “white weenie” to me, but it seems really interesting for the durdly white midrange/control decks.
Rules question: can you return the card you discard in chapter, or must it have a target as soon as the ability triggers?
EDIT (answer), found on Gatherer rulings:
“If you choose to discard a card as The Restoration of Eiganjo's second chapter ability resolves, a second triggered ability goes on the stack and you choose a target for it. Notably, this means you may target the card you discarded if it is a permanent card with mana value 2 or less.”
This card is somewhat similar to Seasoned Pyromancer but slower and better synergies. So far we like it more than the non-haste “army in a can” guys like Hanweir Garrison which have aged poorly for us in the past 2 years.
I have a couple players requesting this because of their experience with it in Modern (a format I know nothing about).
The decision is this vs Winds of Abandon.
Curious how this card has played out for folks. Initially the tempo disadvantage kept me away from it, and the cost reduction from the pitch mode seemed too minimal to make a difference.
For me at 720 the slot was The Wandering Emperor vs Serra the Benevolent, and for now I’ve gone with The Wandering Emperor. I do run “the big 2” white walkers and don’t currently run Elspeth, Sun’s Champion, so perhaps my experience is almost exactly steve_man’s.
I have to admit that it also goes well with the Spell Queller in my Azorius section which I know is not a commonplace inclusion in most guild sections.
This has played a lot worse that I expected. Definitely don’t think it deserves a spot among W 4s, which are just insane.
Maybe could you explain what you expected? I expected this to be Elspeth, Sun’s Nemesis tier but for Azorius and Jeskai flash decks instead of tokens and humans aggro. Turns out the card is just great in a lot of different types of decks, and the flash play pattern can be valuable no matter what you’re playing (from my perspective). Also the power of the diversity of abilities outweighs the low loyalty.
Tenacious Underdog
Lethal Scheme
Strangle
Titan of Industry
Scheming Fence
5 Triomes
I agree with this assessment which I think makes the card pretty good. I’m adding it for 720.
